Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Our Elect have now come to the final step in their preparation to join the Catholic church. For this Fifth Sunday of Lent, our Catechumen (Julie Barber) and our Candidate (Nancy Car-roll) are celebrating with us the last of the scruti-nies." The Scrutinies have been celebrated since the earliest days of the Church. While the word might imply "evaluation" or "assessment," or even "judgment," the root word connotes ra-ther an "intense searching."

While our prayers are for the Elect, the rites of renewal are meant to include all of us as a com-munity, to help us identify and concentrate on the things in our individual lives and our life as church that are not in harmony with the teach-ing found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. In order that our entire Parish Community experience the Rite and also get to know our Elect, we have celebrated the First and Second Scruti-nies at the 8:30am and noon Masses in past weeks and now are celebrating the Third Scruti-ny at the 5pm Mass this Sunday, April 2. The Elect are excited and eager to join us in our Community of Faith. Please welcome them warmly.

Lenten Stations of the Cross

Immigrant Stations of the Cross are scheduled at St. Therese Parish on Fri-day, April 7, at 6:30pm. This traditional devotion, which will include an outside procession, will be led by our new task force on refugees and immigration. We hope everyone will join us.

In Remembrance

Please keep in your prayers those who have died - the sister of longtime parishioner Annabelle Decuir, the uncle of Leo and Mercy Lazo and the grandfather of Matt DeBoer.

Every Lent, Catholics here and throughout the U.S. do something amazingly holy and just. Our prayers, fasting and almsgiving become lifesaving aid for millions of individuals living in conditions of poverty around the world. The hungry are fed; the thirsty are given drink; immigrants and refugees are served; the homeless find shelter.

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program for families and faith communities. It offers simple, yet powerful, ways for all of our parishes, most of our

schools, and families throughout western Washington to bring Lenten spirituality to life.

Rice Bowl began on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and ends with Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. Join our faith community in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl.

Rice Bowls may be returned at Mass on Holy Thursday, April 13th. ENCOUNTER RESILIENCE

We encounter Dita in Ethiopia, and see how her newfound entrepreneurial skills are providing three meals a day for her children — even during a devastating drought. What skills have you discovered this Lent that can be put to good use in building God’s kingdom? How have you worked to better the lives of others? Visit crsrice-bowl.org for more information.

HELPING HOMELESS STUDENTS

AT LESCHI ELEMENTARY

We are invited to join Immaculate Conception Par-ish in providing homeless students at Leschi Elemen-tary with food bags to replace meals they miss when school is not in session during spring break. Leschi Elementary has a homelessness crisis with nearly 90 students who are homeless. If you want to donate food, our list is at this Amazon Wishlist link: http://a.co/5lYvwfZ The items ship directly to the school. If you have a minivan, a Costco membership, or are willing to donate some bulk food items, we need 100 lbs. of rice, yellow split peas and clementines, as well as bag delivery. The rice will be packed in the St. Therese social hall between the morning Masses this Sunday, April 2. We also need bag packers at 5:30 pm in the Immaculate Conception rectory base-ment on Wednesday, April 5. It’s a great way for a Lenten small group to do a service project.

Questions? Contact Rachel Faber Machacha at [email protected] or 206-422-9920.

Young Adult Holy Thursday Pilgrimage

April 13th, 6pm – midnight

Join Archbishop Sartain, Bishop Elizondo and hundreds of young adults (18-39) as we pilgrimage around Capitol and First Hills in Seattle for the annual Holy Thursday Pil-grimage.

Come meet up with us after participating in your Parish Liturgy or after the Mass of the Lord's Supper at St. James (which begins at 6pm). Our timeline includes gathering on the steps of St. James Cathedral at 8pm, visiting different churches around Seattle and con-cluding with prayer back at the steps of St. James at midnight. For more information contact Joy Galvez, Director of Youth Minis-try, at joy.galvez@seattlearch,org

Important alert from the Archdiocese’s Office of Parish Financial Services:

We have become aware of a situation (currently under investigation) in a Seattle parish in which new parishioners (a couple) posing as professionals have joined a congregation, made friends with other parishioners and then requested large loans from them in order to take care of a short-term financial crisis — ailing relatives, non-paying clients, etc. PLEASE avoid responding to these requests should they be made by anyone that you have not known for a long time and for whom you do not understand their family and financial situation.

FUND DRIVE IN MEMORY OF JOYCE BRANCH TO BENEFIT STCA ATHLETIC DEPT.

A fund-drive is under way to benefit the STCA Athletics Dept. in memory of Joyce (Missy) Jones Branch, who died five years ago on March 19, 2012, after a battle with breast cancer. Part of a long-time school family, she was the daughter of Bernetta and Andrew Branch. This month-long fundraiser will continue through Easter Sunday, April 16.

Missy was a standout student-athlete at Garfield and the University of Washington. After her playing career ended, she gave of her time and talent to coach girls basketball at St. Therese. All funds collect-ed in her memory will go directly to the Athletics Program and will be used to purchase uniforms, equip-ment, jerseys and shoes and to help fund athletic scholarships to ensure that all students can partici-pate.

Checks and money orders "In memory of Joyce Jones Branch" may be mailed to STCA at 900 35th Ave., Seattle WA 98122. For donations by credit card, go to http://www.stcaseattle.org/how-to-give/ or contact Mary Gubelman in the school office at 206- 324-0460 (Monday through Friday from 9m-3pm). If you give online, please send an e-mail to [email protected] letting us know about the donation so we can properly track it and assign it to this fund. Thank you for helping to keep Joyce’s memory alive and for your prayers and your generosity.

As we march onward into the first week of April, we are nearing Holy Week where we re-member the highs and the lows of our shared faith story. While children often look forward to the celebratory season of Easter, we must not forget, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, that “There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday.”

Thus, in times of darkness and pain, whether as a result of the loss of a loved one, a personal battle with illness or economic or other hardships, we must be people of hope and people of light, for out of the crucifixion came the Resurrection.

As we look out at our community, our city, our country and our world, let us all be inten-tional and mindful of those in need, of those in more-or-less permanent “Good Friday” condi-tions, and offer them hope through our thoughts, words, and above all, our actions.

God Bless, Principal, Matthew D. DeBoer

Spring Open House at STCA: this Thursday, April 6, from 9am-11:30am. Please invite friends or relatives who may be a good fit for our community!
