AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Meal… A Video… A Small Group Discussion Alpha provides the opportunity to examine your faith in an inspiring way. As Jesus is made known, the Fa-ther is revealed more clearly, and pours the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Alpha is engaging, thought-provoking, and enlightening. The most important part of Alpha is the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic of the video. The small groups allow for wonderful sharing. There is no obligation to say anything; and there is nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in a friendly and open environment.

• Alpha is for everyone, no matter where they are on their faith journey.

• Alpha begins on Tuesday, February 12th at 6:30 pm and runs for 11 weeks.

• There is no charge for the Alpha course. • For more information and to register: www.stmaryglenshaw.org/alpha

Isn’t This The Son Of Joseph? – In today’s Gospel we find Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. He proclaims that he is the anointed one of God and that he has come to renew the world in fulfillment of what the prophets

foretold. The people are amazed by his words, but they also question him. They know him as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. To them he is a simple man from a simple family. While they are attracted by the words that he speaks they wonder how he could possibly do the amazing things that he speaks of. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to share his life and love with everyone we meet. Often times we feel called as missionaries to help those in need in other parts of our city, throughout our country and even halfway across the world! Yet, sometimes we can feel most challenged in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our hometown or home parish. We wonder how we could possibly be effective witness of Jesus to the people who know our weaknesses and who have seen us at our less than best. Be confident! This is the exact witness that the world needs, that God calls us in our imperfection to set the world on fire with his love that is already burning in our hearts. As we continue our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we are invited to be effective witnesses of the Gospel both near and far. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.
