If you’ve followed the story in the news about the doctor recently convicted of the abuse of gymnasts at MSU and in the U.S. Olympic gymnastics program, you’re familiar with the horrific scope and brutality of his actions. One of his victims, Rachael Denhol-lander, gave a powerful victim impact statement prior to his sentencing. Her statement describes not only the abuse she suffered, but also the ways in which her cries for help were systematically ignored. Ms Denhollander also spoke powerfully about themes from a Christian perspective: retribution but also reconciliation, punishment but also penance. I would like to share some of her words with you: If you have read the Bible you carry, you know forgiveness does not come from doing good things, as if good deeds can erase what you have done. It comes from repentance which requires facing and acknowledging the truth about what you have done in all of its utter depravity… you have damaged hundreds. The Bible you speak [of] carries a final judgment where all of God's wrath and eternal terror is poured out on men like you. Should you ever reach the point of truly facing what you have done, the guilt will be crushing. And that is what makes the gospel of Christ so sweet. Because it extends grace and hope and mercy where none should be found. And it will be there for you. I pray you experience the soul crushing weight of guilt so you may someday experience true repentance and true forgiveness from God, which you need far more than forgiveness from me – though I extend that to you as well. Ms Denhollander requested that the maximum sentence be imposed on her abuser, out of a sense of justice. But, she also encouraged him to seek God’s forgiveness, and through that repentance, grace and hope and mercy. Blessings, Fr. Larry

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE! If you were asked to describe just one story from the Bible, with which story would you respond? Adam & Eve? Noah and the ark? The raising of Lazarus? Now, if you were asked to describe what happened in the Bible immediately before or after that story… would you be able to do so? Please join us for our spring Scripture study, “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible”. We’ll meet on Mondays in February and March at 7pm in the social hall. Our goal will be to gain a greater understanding of the entire ‘story’ of the Bible, in its context. Please join us! Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.

Marilyn McNeil de Latour

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ST. BONAVENTURE BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY is offering a seven-week grief support group this Spring. We invite anyone who is grieving the death of a loved one to join us for this free series. A morning Grief Support Group will be held at 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM beginning Friday, March 2 through Friday, April 20, 2018 (excluding Good Friday). For more information or to register call the St Bonaventure Parish Center at 412-486-2606.ext 101. All are welcome. If this time is not convenient, we will also offer a Support Group in the Fall. COME AND SEE: Why do Catholics do what they do? Find out why and how Catholics use gestures, symbols and signs. What are Liturgical colors? How do we use candles, water and crosses? Why are they part of our faith and how do they affect us? All are invited to attend this workshop to better understand Catholic liturgy and ritual. Refreshments. 9am to Noon, Sat. Feb. 24 in parish social hall. There is a $15 fee and 3 hours of catechetical credit is available for Religious Ed and Catholic school teachers. Register online: https://tinyurl.com/WhyDoCatholics

ALPHA - WINTER/SPRING 2018 Beginning Tuesday, February 20th at St. Mary of the Assumption, Glenshaw. For many persons, the desire to know God is innate. However, most of us struggle with how to connect with God in a meaningful way. Alpha is a great way to re-awaken and enliven your relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Alpha begins with a meal, is followed by a short video, and then a small group discussion occurs about topics set forth in the videos. The small groups allow for wonderful sharing. There isn’t an obligation to say anything; and there is nothing you cannot say. Alpha is not about “preaching or teaching”. It is an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in a friendly and open environment. Alpha begins at 6:30 pm and ends promptly at 8:30 pm, every Tuesday, starting February 20th. For more information please visit our website at http://www.stmaryglenshaw.org/alpha/. There is not a fee for the Alpha course.
