Love One Another A few years ago while I was serving on my first assignment as a parochial vicar at St. Anselm in Swissvale, I was sharing lunch with the parish staff around our kitchen table when one of the secretaries decided to test our knowledge about marriage with a ten ques-tion marriage quiz that had been constructed by a number of marriage counselors and therapists and published in the Readers Digest. The first question was, “What is the big-gest problem facing American couples today?” I don’t think that I would have ever re-membered this Trivial Pursuit question if it weren’t for the fact that I was the only one around the table that afternoon (most of whom were married) that knew the correct an-swer. While everyone else was coming up with answers like “Finances” or “Raising chil-dren” or “Job security” I stunned my colleagues with the correct answer, “Intimacy”. It has been the tradition of the Church since 1983 that this Sunday, the Sunday pre-ceding Valentine’s Day, be relegated as World Marriage Day. It’s obvious to understand how this tradition began with a culture that usually parallels Valentine’s Day with roman-tic love, and marriage is assumed to be the natural consequence when two people feel drawn to each other and believe that they have fallen in love with each other. Unfortu-nately the statistics seem to indicate that most couples seem to have a difficult time staying in love with each other. 50% of all couples will divorce. 40% will become virtual room-mates for each other, and a grand total of 10% will be engaged in happy and loving mar-riages. In other words, 90% of all relationships either die or on life support. What’s the problem? The answer is the same as it has been for decades. Intimacy! Or rather, a lack of it. Webster seems to struggle with even defining intimacy, referring to it as a state of being intimate, which, in turn, is defined as being very personal or inward. The fact is that intimacy is achieved when two souls are brought together. Aristotle referred to it as one heart in two bodies, but in order for this phenomenon to occur there has to be a spiri-tual bonding and most couples would struggle to describe the spiritual nature of their rela-tionship. The consequence is obvious – no spirituality – no intimacy. A story that has gotten back to me is that after one of our Alpha sessions during which prayer was discussed that one of our participants returned home where his wife was sick. Because of what had been discussed that evening at Alpha, he asked his wife if she would want him to pray with her. She consented but was a little mystified by his request because he had never offered to do anything that spiritual or personal before, but when he finished, she looked at him and said, “In the 50 years that we have been married, that was the nicest and most beautiful thing that you have ever done for me.” In the Gospel of John, at the Last Supper, the Lord Jesus commands His disciples to “Love one another”, which is the theme for World Marriage Day. However, it is hard to imagine that He was referring to a love without intimacy, because intimacy is what we all need, married or non-married, to be a happy and healthy human being. When we learn to love intimately we not only give life to others but we become more alive ourselves. God is love and love gives us life and God, love and life are all connected. Fr. Tim

Put Out Into Deep Water And Lower Your Nets For A Catch – When we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus it is pretty clear that so much of it was unexpected. God’s chosen people were certainly awaiting a Messiah, a Savior, but they were expecting a rich and pow-

erful king, not an itinerant preacher. Even the people Jesus sur-rounded himself with – the poor, sinners, the marginalized – were unexpected. Why wouldn’t the Savior surround himself with more influential people? Yet, we know that Christ came to save all, not just some and that he casts his net far and wide in order to draw a l l people to h imsel f . As followers of Christ, we seek to be his face and hands and heart in the world today and we look for countless ways to invite others to share in his life of faith. The words he speaks to Peter and the Apostles are spoken to us. “Do not be afraid” to “put out into deep water” and inspire the hearts of everyone you meet to know and love Jesus. While you may not think so, your witness of faith can be just what someone else needs to go deeper themselves in their relationship with the Lord. On Mission for The Church Alive! invites us all to look for ways build up the Body of Christ. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.

BTA is pleased to offer a rigorous curriculum, competitive athletics program, numerous extra curricular activities, opportunities to serve the community, small class sizes, t. Anthony's Program, Alpha Program for Confirmation candidates, and much more. For more information please call 412-486-7611 or go to https://nhrces.org/trinity.Let us show you the Catholic school difference! Although we had a shortened Catholic School Week, BTA students and families showed an overwhelm-ing amount of generosity when it came to donating to s eve r a l s e rv i ce s p ro j ec t s we commi t t ed to. First, BTA pledged to put together 100 bagged lunches for the Red Door Program, which provides food for the homeless in downtown Pittsburgh. Because of the abun-dance of donations, we were able to donate 150 lunches! Students from kindergarten through 8th grade played part in putting together the bags with our younger students decorating the bags with pictures and words of encourage-ment to our older students who made the sandwiches. A special thanks goes out to all of the families who donated food items, money or gift cards, Giant Eagle for donating the fruit, and Wagner's Market for helping us with the bread, cheese and lunch meat. In addition we also collected items and made cards for for a Forward Surgical Team who is stationed in Afghanistan until later this summer. Once again our BTA families stepped up to the plate and donated everything from soap to candy to other sundries. We are so blessed to have such a giving school community! ST. URSULA USHERS — We are in need of Ushers/Greeters for the Sunday, 6:00 p.m. Mass at St. Ursula, please contact Paul Wolf at 412-486-7820.
