As of Friday, November 20 (When this bulle n needed to be submi ed) there have been 52 gi s totaling $19,815.00. Gi s range from $5.00 to $3,000.00. Thank you for your generosity. In the past this pro-gram was adver sed through Advent Giving Trees where parishioners were able to take a tag and fill the request of the gi but this year it is streamlined. There will be no tags and no trees just the request to consid-er dona ng new winter hats, gloves or mi ens before December 13. The Commi ee will package up the gi s and deliver to the organiza on for distribu on. Thank you for your kindness!

  • The Season of Advent Begins! The Season of Advent begins today, and along with it the new liturgical year. Advent, a word meaning “to wait for,” is a season that makes Christmas all the more meaningful. As Chris ans, we are encouraged to give due honor to the season of Advent as we wait for and prepare for the birth of Jesus. It is spiritually cri cal that the weeks of Advent do not get lost in the light of the more defined season of Christmas. Advent, the season that struggles for a en on, presents a very valuable ques on: “What am I going to do for Advent?” Will it be making a commitment to withhold Christmas decora-

ons un l the proper me (a er December 17) or making an Advent wreath for the home and when will I celebrate the sacrament of confession to spiritually prepare to welcome Jesus at Christmas? The four candles of the wreath allow one to move ever closer to Christmas with joyful an cipa on. Another wonderful way to mark the days as we get closer to Christmas is to use an Advent Calendar. Maybe it is a family heirloom or one of the calendars that reveal a li le bit of candy behind each door. Either way, an Advent Calendar moves us steadily towards Christmas. A Jesse Tree shows many of the figures and events in the history of salva on. A Jesse Tree is a favorite for fami-lies with children as one emblem is added to the tree each day allowing the family to pray and learn about each item. Maybe it is service to others that mark an Advent custom. Service to a neighbor or organiza on is a very ap-propriate way to move closer to the celebra on of the Na vity of our Lord. Whatever your tradi on is for Advent or as you start a tradi on this year, doing something is important in this season of joyful wai ng. When we mark the days of Advent we become united in the seasons purpose and honor the season. When this is done, the season of Christmas becomes all the more cherished and valuable to our spiritu-al lives. Happy Wai ng, Happy Advent!

Advent Tradi ons: The Advent Wreath Probably the most popular tradi on today in Advent is ligh ng the candles on the Advent Wreath in both churches and homes. This custom originated among the Lutherans in Germany in the 16th Century and quickly became popular in other areas. The tradi on of the Advent Wreath came to America with German immi-grants. It was popularized among Catholics with the liturgical movement in the mid-1900s. The Advent Wreath, which may be of any size, is made of evergreens and has four candles, one for each week of Advent. There are either four purple candles with some designa on for the third week of Advent or there are three purple can-dles and one pink or rose candle. Purple is the tradi onal color of the season, be-cause of its peniten al focus, and rose or pink is used to catch our a en on, for on the third week of Advent we refocus our a en on to the pending arrival of the Christ child. The true symbolism of the wreath is light, light increases, pushing out darkness week a er week un l we get to the celebra on of the light of the world coming into the world at Christmas. Wreaths have always been symbolic of victory and glory. The basic symbolism of the Advent Wreath goes beyond this. It lies in the tension between dark-ness and light. It represents the long me when people lived in spiritual darkness, wai ng for the coming of the Messiah, the light of the world. Each year in Advent people wait once again in darkness for the coming of the Lord, his historical coming in the mystery of Bethlehem, his final coming at the end of me, and his special coming in every moment of grace. As we celebrate this season of prayer, repentance and prepara on for the Lord, may we be blessed with His grace each day so that we can look at these weeks and see how blessed we are to appropriately prepare for the birth of our Savior. Happy Advent!

Prayer for the Ligh ng of the Family Advent Wreath Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, He is the Savior of every na on. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salva on. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
