Today we celebrate All Saints Day. The origin of this solemn remembrance of our departed members and friends in Christ dates to the 7th century when Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon in Rome to heroes of the faith across the centuries. Today, while we acknowledge the loss we feel at the deaths of our friends and loved ones, we also claim our communion with them which is unending, and the promise that by God’s grace we will share eternity with them. We proudly join in the fellowship of all Christ’s followers, the saints.

*LITANY Kendall Wyckoff

One: Let us gather together before the Everlasting One. All: We join with the company of believers who seek to honor our God. One: We are called to be the church, and sanctified through Christ. All: We are among God’s great cloud of witnesses. One: Christ has demonstrated for us the humility, simplicity, and selflessness expected of God’s people. All: We seek to pattern our lives upon Christ’s, as we follow his path through the joys and tears of our

lives. One: Let us pray.

*UNISON PRAYER

Eternal God, we find comfort in remembering your saints. Some we have known well, and their lives have inspired and encouraged us. Others are unknown to us, but you have remembered them and honored them. We are grateful that all your saints are part of a faithful, beloved community. Let your saints stir us to demonstrate proof of your transforming grace and to live always as your sanctified people. May our names, too, be listed among your great communion of saints. Amen.

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 34: selected verses Jill A. Truax

Cantor and Congregation One: 1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast

in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Cantor and Congregation One: 5 Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps

around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. 9 O fear the LORD, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want.

Cantor and Congregation One: 15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. 17 When the righteous cry

for help, the LORD hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. 22 The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Cantor and Congregation RESPONSE

One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen.

READING FROM THE EPISTLES Rev. Holly H. Adams

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

First Corinthians 1:2-10

2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5 for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind - 6 just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you - 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purpose.

RESPONSE

One: God’s grace enriches us and strengthen us, granting us fellowship with all Christ’s followers. All: We are the church, a sanctified people who are called to be saints.

CALL TO THE GOSPEL LESSON OF THE DAY Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Matthew 5:14-16

14 ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.’

RESPONSE

One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

UNISON CALL TO OFFERING Kendall Wyckoff God, today as we acknowledge the influence of all your saints, help us to see ourselves in that role, too. Let us live as your humble servants, strengthened by the conviction that because you dwell among us, we are never alone and are remembered forever. OFFERTORY “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” Chancel Choir

Johannes Brahms

How lovely is Thy dwelling-place, O Lord of Hosts, O Lord of Hosts, Thy dwelling-place, O Lord of Hosts!

How lovely is Thy dwelling-place, O Lord of Hosts! How lovely is Thy dwelling-place, O Lord of Hosts!

For my soul, it longeth, yea, fainteth, for the courts of the Lord; My soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living God,

How lovely is Thy dwelling-place, O Lord of Hosts, O Lord of Hosts. Blest are they, O blest are they that swell within Thy house;

They praise Thy name evermore, they praise Thee, They praise Thy name evermore!

How lovely, is Thy dwelling-place.

*REMEMBRANCE OF THE SAINTS Clergy of the Church

(a solemn reading of the names of those who have passed from our midst and into God’s keeping since the last All Saints’ Day)

THE PROMISE OF SCRIPTURE

Revelation 21:1-6a Clergy of the Church

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’

5And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.’

GLOBAL PRAYER PARTNERS: Columbia. Michael Joseph serves with the Peace Commission of the Evangelical Council of Colombia (CEDECOL). To stand for peace in the midst of war is not easy. That is precisely what our partners in Colombia have done for more than twenty-five years. With their country in the middle of a violent internal armed conflict that has claimed the lives of over 250,000 Colombians, they have not wavered in their commitment to peaceful conflict resolution or to care for those who have suffered the harms of war. Following a peace accord signed between the Colombian Government and the FARC rebels in 2016, implementation continues in spite of much opposition. Some prefer the chaos of war, and the fortunes that can be made through its waging. But CEDECOL and its partners know that the road to a more complete peace may be rocky, but it is the road we are called to travel. Prayer: Loving God, Today we pray for the country of Colombia and our partners in mission there. Let them feel your guiding presence as they work to bring fighting to an end, and to implement the peace accords. Encourage them and give them stamina so that they don’t become discouraged at the slow pace of peacebuilding. Be with them as they work for the reintegration of former combatants into civilian life. May your healing touch be felt in their lives and seen through their ministries. Amen.
