My heart beats fast when I see the way light plays across forms...the petals of a flower, the planes of the face, or the sharp, clean edge of a sun struck wave, building or tree. It is enthralling to see light softly diffuse through the atmosphere or illuminate the poetic drape of a flower stem or the graceful pose of the body, and harmoniously organize shapes and shadows and edges into a beautiful melody. The revelation of nature’s truth and beauty through light, is the real star of the show and I applaud with each paint stroke.” Mary Aslin is a traditional representational painter, inspired by the profusion of beauty in people, still life, and landscapes. Her richly colored, dramatic pastel and oil paintings are usually completed alla primaall at oncein order to capture the immediacy and poetry of her subjects. Her collectors and peers are consistently drawn to the color and light in her work. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1984 and has studied at The Gage Academy of Art and with several noteworthy artists. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Northwest Pastel Society and is an exhibitor at the prestigious Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. She is also a member of the Southern California Plein Air Painters, the Southern California Artists, and the California Art Club. Mary maintains a studio in Laguna Beach, California and is represented by Chemers Gallery, Tustin, California. Her award winning work can be found in private collections in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Asia. Become An Ambassador For SAL We are in the process of growing our membership. We need your help in recruiting new members. You can help by simply introducing our league to potential members by inviting the people around you who have an interest in art to come to our meetings for FREE. Please keep three brochures in your car handy to give to prospects. Many of you take art classes. It is an ideal recruiting ground. Please announce our meetings and take copies of the upcoming artist announcements with you. I have found that my art teachers are more than happy to allow me a few minutes to inform the class about our upcoming demo. Some teachers have allowed me to write the information on the blackboard. Discuss our league with your friends, other artists, and family that has an interest in art. When you attend art shows or other art venues do mention SAL. In overcome their objections about driving at night let them know that we can look a member who can car pool with them.

As a result of our new relationship with the City of Mission Viejo, we will be able to offer many more venues for artists to participate in. Many artists work on their own. Interact-ing with other artists is a wonderful way to share ideas. Tell them that their work can be brought to meet-ings to be critiqued by a professional teacher and artist Marlene Gerloff. Tell them about the talented artists and teachers who have done our demos. Many artists work alone, remind them how healthy it is to interact with other artists, participate in shows, and participate as a volunteer with other artists. Encourage them that devoting one night a month for an “art night out” at a very cheap price is a fun and educational evening out. Our president Lynda Zimmer and her board are working hard to create more venues this year. Now is a good time for us to recruit new members. Please make a commit-ment to us to take it upon yourself to become an ambassa-dor for The Saddleback Art League. Carla Kiernan Membership Chair
