2014has broughtwith it a senseof optimism
and clarity that appears to befocusing our clients’ minds insurprising ways – many of themare choosing to put in placefuneral plans – and as onedoesn’t normally associateoptimism and funeral planningwe thought we would share withyou the reasons why our clientsare choosing to invest in thisvaluable service. Earlier this year, The Mailpublished an article detailing howthe average cost of a funeralcurrently stands at about £3,400and is estimated to rise toapproximately £8,500 in the next 8to 10 years. Our clients are telling
us that they do not wantfriends and family to beburdened with trying to findthis money, especially as theyare aware that these costs willusually need to be paid longbefore their estate is settledand any cash freed up.Additionally, many peopleplan for their funeral intheir Will, which is oftennot read until after thefuneral has been held. Pre-planning a funeralensures that you get thefuneral you want, withthe added benefit ofmaking an alreadydifficult time simpler andless stressful for bereavedloved ones.
However, in spite of the obviousbenefits, the hardship of recentyears seems to have madepeople far more cautious abouthow they spend and investtheir money, and sodiscerning clients are lookingfor funeral plans that notonly offer excellent value, but also represent a secureinvestment. The funeralplans sold by RichardsonsLegal Services are provided
by an established andreputable firm with anexcellent track record, and the money paid isheld in a trust that cannotbe used for any otherpurpose than to pay for afuneral.

Peace of mind for Compton coupleFormer Royal Navy pilot Robin Whiteway-Wilkinson and his French born wife Martine had been ‘talking for years’ about updating their wills and resolving other inheritance matters – but didn’t really know who best to speak to.
Then they read about Richardsons Legal Services in the Plymouth Magazine and decided it was time to take action.
The couple, who live in Compton, had not updated their wills for more than 30 years and with their three children grown up and bringing up their own families, Robin and Martine decided to speak to David Richardson for advice.
Robin said: “We read about other people in a similar situation and felt that we needed to find out more. David visited us at home and we talked through our concerns about ensuring our children and grandchildren were properly provided for.
“David explained everything very clearly and was extremely patient with us,” said Martine, a former Red Cross nurse.
Robin added: “He recommended a full Trust package consisting of Wills,
Lasting Powers of Attorney and Trusts. We could see that this provided us and our family with the protection we needed and decided to proceed.”
Their plans were delayed during 2014
because Martine was in hospital for a lengthy period, but as soon as she was well again, the formalities were completed.
“We now have peace of mind and are extremely grateful for the professional advice provided by Richardsons Legal Services,” said Robin.
The couple were also concerned about inheritance tax issues because they have a number or properties and David Richardson was able to refer them to his co-director Paul Clahane, who is a fully qualified independent financial advisor.
Paul is helping Robin and Martine with their investments with the aim of removing inheritance tax from their estate.
“Everything that we were worried about has now been dealt with, thanks to David and Paul,” added Robin.
“They were able to o er us full estate planning services, covering both the legal and financial aspects. We would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone.”
Now Robin and Martine can relax and enjoy retirement - especially taking their dog Odie for walks on the Moors.

Advertorial
With the pending General Election, it may be of interest to recall the part Saltash played in the government of bygone days.
The first parliament was convened by King Henry III on 20th January, 1265, when Cornwall was represented by two knights nominated by the Sheriff. Many colourful characters represented Cornwall over the centuries, with lawyers and landowners predominant. In 1447, Sir Hugh Courtney was a representative and described as ‘Ship Owner and Pirate’. At the same time, across the border in Devon, Robert Wenynyton sat for Dartmouth and was described as ‘Pirate and Deputy Admiral’; he came to a sad end, on the block.
During the reign of King Edward VI, Saltash was allocated two parliamentary seats in 1547. These were awarded to Christopher Smith (an Exchequer clerk) and Henry Fisher (Member of the Worshipful Company of Skinners). It may seem odd that a small market town such as Saltash should be so honoured but down the road East Looe and West Looe had two members each (William Pitt referred to them as ‘the rotten part of the constitution’, giving them the popular name of Rotten Boroughs.) In Cornwall alone, there were 44 MPs, while cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester were not represented. Today Cornwall has 5 members.
Many prominent personages were, to all intents and purposes, representing Saltash until the Reform Act of 1832. Probably the most important member was Edward Hyde, elected in 1640. He had a chequered career in parliament, such as being sent to The Tower for two weeks for ‘Royalism’ during Cromwell’s Commonwealth government. He went into exile with the young Prince of Wales/Duke of Cornwall (later Charles II) and became one of his most influential advisers. On the restoration of the Monarchy, he was elevated to First Earl of Clarendon. His daughter, Anne, became pregnant by James, younger brother of Charles who insisted he married the lady. Now a Duchess, she bore him eight children but died of breast cancer before her
husband ascended the throne as James II. The former Mr Hyde became an Earl while his daughter was a Duchess and two grand-daughters were Queens of England - Mary (with William of Orange) and later, Anne. Hyde’s high moral standards were too much for the high living Charles II and he was eventually sent into exile in France, where he died.
Quite a number of the Saltash members were not only lawyers or landowners but unemployed service officers such as Captain George Rodney (later Admiral), Admiral George Clinton and Captain Edward Boscawen (later Admiral). Voting was limited to burgesses and the election took place in public. It was not unknown for candidates to buy the votes of entitled voters and, as the count was made in public, there was no chance of a voter accepting money from more than one candidate. It wasn’t until 1872 that the secret ballot was introduced. Prior to the Reform Acts, corruption was rife; “election brokers” could arrange transfers to a more convenient area, and buying a whole constituency was not unknown. Things got so blatant that, in 1812, Grampound was disenfranchised for corruption and an election broker, Sir Manasseh Lopes, was fined £10,000 and sentenced to eight months in Exeter jail. Voltaire remarked that “in England they maintain liberty by corruption.”
The infamy of the ‘Rotten Boroughs’ was eventually curbed by the Reform Act of 1831 that reduced Saltash, amongst many others, to just one representative. The following year the Reform Act of 1832 abolished the seat completely, as well as the representation of many of the former ‘Rotten Boroughs’. The last member for Saltash was Bethel Walron, a Devon landowner.
Today, Saltash is part of the South East Cornwall constituency and represented by Mrs Sheryll Murray who polled 22,350 votes at the 2011 General Election. It is sad to realize that 22, 680 registered voters failed to exercise their hard won right to vote.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY* Is a legal document that allows you to
appoint up to four people of your choice to make decisions on your behalf - in
the absence of this document, the court may appoint an individual that you do
not approve of ! * You can only create these documents
whilst you have mental capacity. * Creating a Lasting Power of Attorney
will make things easier, faster and more economical than applying to the courts
for a Deputyship order. * Your chosen attorneys can make decisions regarding financial and
property and health and welfare matters. These documents are just as important as your will - life expectancy inclines
and so does the risk of mental incapacity.

Children will enjoy making these buttery biscuits for family and friends over the holidays. They could also wrap them up as Easter gifts.
Prep time: 20 mins Cooking Time: 15 minsMakes: 20-25
Ingredients125g softened butter75g caster sugar, plus 1-2 tbsp for sprinkling1 egg, separated200g plain flour, sifted¼ tsp ground cinnamon¼ tsp mixed spiceZest of 1 lemon75g currants2 tbsp milk
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together, using a wooden spoon or electric hand whisk, until pale and fluffy.
2. Beat in the egg yolk, reserving the white. Then, using a round-bladed knife, gently stir in the sifted flour, spices, lemon zest and currants. Gradually stir in the milk until the dough starts to come together – you may need slightly less, or a little more, milk.
3. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured worktop and knead gently until smooth. Roll out to about 5mm thick then cut out the biscuits using a rabbit-shaped cutter, a 7.5cm round cutter, or shape of your choice.
4. Place the biscuits on 2-3 greased baking trays and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven. Whisk the reserved egg white very slightly, brush lightly over the biscuits then sprinkle with sugar. Return to the oven for a further 5 minutes, until just golden. Remove and place on a cooling rack.
Cook’s tipsThe biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Freshen homemade biscuits, by placing them in a warm oven for 3-4 minutes.
Drinks recommendationEnjoy these biscuits with a fruit smoothie.

The Bowen Fascial Release Technique. The Bowen Technique is one of the most contemporary and exciting forms of holistic, therapeutic bodywork available today. In the North of England, it is already being used as a referral pathway for the NHS. It is revolutionary - why? Well, simply put, it is so gentle and pleasurable to receive, yet incredibly eective in its purpose, which is to address the causes of structural imbalance and pain, thereby restoring functionality back into people’s lives. How can something be so powerful and pleasurable to receive? Bowen is comprised of gentle, rolling-type movements delivered in a series of sequences, directly positioned over exact anatomical locations on the body. These moves are predominantly performed by the thumbs and ngers and are interspersed with occasional breaks, allowing the body’s systems to fully absorb the energy of the treatment. How does Bowen work? It aects the connective tissues of the body, these being the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, of which fascia is of the most importance. What is fascia? It is the network of tissue that surrounds organs, muscle bres, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves, and lives beneath our skin. Its purpose is to give our body’s structural integrity and functional movement through the correct balance of muscular tone and hydration. Simply put, our fascia, not the musculoskeletal system, holds us together and enables us to move freely, by interconnecting our body and mind as a whole. It’s tapping into this connection that makes Bowen unique as a stand-alone treatment for a plethora of physical and psychological issues. Regardless of age, size, gender, physical ability or state of health, Bowen has the potential to restore a better functioning you, manage your pain and vastly improve your sense of wellbeing. BOOK REVIEW
The Perfect Summerby Juliet Nicolson
This isn’t a novel, although the author’s lively style and anecdotal approach make it seem like one. The book describes the summer of 1911 – one of the hottest on record – a time when very few people realised that war was looming, but a period of unrest when strikes and suffragettes were shaking political and social stability.
Nicolson concentrates on individuals from all classes whose actions during this summer either characterised or changed what was going on in Britain at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many well-known names are mentioned – Churchill, George V, Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf and Augustus John are among the many which appear in the book. We see them, not from the usual historical perspective, but from a personal view - as people who have not yet established their fame.
One of the aspects of the era that is strongly conveyed is the difference between rich and poor. Conditions in the city slums are described so graphically, the reader can smell, as well as visualise, what it must have been like. By contrast, the decadence of the country house, set with its extravagant parties and myriads of servants, is lavishly presented. What strikes us is the insuperable gap between the two worlds of the careworn and the careless.
Despite this serious theme, there are also amusing parts to the book: the strict rules regarding sea bathing, for instance, which stipulated the extent of the costume required; and the method of conveying the swimmer to the water via bathing machine. Nicolson notes, tellingly, that those who could not afford to hire bathing machines stood on the beach clad in their Sunday best, trussed up in thick boots, stays and large hats.
It is fascinating and rather poignant to read about the early lives of many who were to become famous, seeing their youthful optimism while knowing what the, often dark, future held for them. You don’t need to be interested in history to enjoy this book.
C.A.M.
“The Elegance of the Hedgehog”by Muriel Barbery.
Perhaps it isn’t a very encouraging beginning to a review to say that I struggled with this book at times, especially in the opening chapters. I must confess that I am still not absolutely sure what it is about. However, as I read on, I became more interested and engaged in the characters; it is certainly not a plot-led book!
Set in an apartment block in an expensive district of Paris, it focuses on the lives of the inhabitants from the point of view of the concierge, Renee. Of course, she only sees snapshots of their existences but this doesn’t stop her from having a very determined opinion of each of them…and she doesn’t like them at all. They are privileged, rich and narrow-minded. She, on the other hand, beneath her carefully manufactured persona of the average dull-witted concierge (and this is how she perceives that her clients view her), is educated in the arts and in philosophy; in short, she is a great intellectual and spends a lot of time theorising and contemplating on the meaning of life. She is not alone in this: there are snippets of another narrative voice – that of Paloma, the child of one of the rich families in the apartment block, who is facetiously intelligent and who sees herself as the intellectual superior of the rest of the world and who is quick to point out their faults and follies. Paloma has decided that she will commit suicide before she reaches adolescence, having set fire to the building first.
Yes, it is a bit odd!
Once the charming and empathetic Japanese millionaire, Kakuro, is added to the mix, it gets even odder. I didn’t altogether believe in his relationship with Renee. From the moment he meets her he guesses at her “terrible secret”, that of her supreme intellect and love of the arts. He invites her to his apartment and a cerebral friendship develops – they are soul mates and his affection for her causes her to blossom in some unexpected and charming ways.
From this moment in the novel, life seems to change. Paloma finds a reason for living – indeed a number of theories on the meaning of life are brought forward. Is one of the themes of the book, which indulges in some long philosophical polemics, the answer to the question: “What makes us glad we are alive?” Certainly, one of the themes is about class and categorisation and the belief that one does not have to remain in whatever pigeonhole society constructs for one.
Despite the serious interludes and the intensely introspective nature of the main characters, the narrative is not without humour. There are some funny incidents, made funnier by the way in which they are observed. In fact, there were moments when I wondered whether the whole thing was just a mocking satire...yet it ended hopefully.........I think! C.A.M.
