Once upon a time there was a snake named Sam. He was a big fat Carpet Snake! He had a friend named Bandi. She was a Bandi Bandi snake.

Sam and Bandi lived with lots of other animals in a patch of native vegetation on a farm. Every day they would slither out of their holes looking for food. The area could be dangerous as they would often have to watch out for farm machinery and farm animals.

Sally the Black-eared Miner liked to harass Sam and Bandi when they were out of their hole. They would always have to listen out for her as she would dive down and swoop them.

One day, when Sam and Bandi were out slithering around the paddock, Sally dove down swooping them. Sam and Bandi tried to get away.

Unfortunately, they went very close to a herd of cattle. The cattle got spooked by the two snakes and started to stampede. A large cow named ‘Moo’ accidently stepped on Bandi.Bandi had a badly injured tail and Sam had to try and drag her back to his hole.

Farmer Flin noticed the injured Bandi as he was driving through the paddock. Flin knew Bandi Bandis were very special snakes as they are threatened species. He stopped, took a photo of her injury and sent it to Wildlife Victoria.

Farmer Flin knew that the officer from Wildlife Victoria would know the best thing to do to help Bandi. When the wildlife officer arrived, Flin took them to Sam and Bandi’s hole. He knew where they lived because he had seen them come out of the hole before.

The wildlife officer caught Bandi and put her in a cage. He took her away in his ute.Sam was very worried as he had not been separated from Bandi for a very long time.

Farmer Flin decided to try and protect the important native wildlife on his farm.

He moved the cows out of the patch of native vegetation and put them in a different paddock. Farmer Flin decided to protect the native creatures and vegetation by fencing off the area. The native animals, like Sam and Bandi, could move where they liked but the cattle would not be able to get in.

A few weeks passed and Sam had grown very worried about Bandi. He missed his friend terribly and was very lonely.

Sam saw a ute drive over the hill. It was a white ute and had some sort of sign on its side. The ute was heading straight towards Sam’s hole. He slithered as fast as he could back into the hole because he was afraid of whoever it was.

A person got out of the ute and lifted a cage out of the back. Sam knew exactly who was inside. It was Bandi!Sam was so happy that he slithered straight up to her. Bandi and Sam thought they were the luckiest snakes in the world to see each other again. They slithered down their hole knowing that because Farmer Flin had protected the native vegetation on his property they would be much safer.
