    Sam MacDonald

Sam MacDonald was born in 1964 on the Isle o Lewis where he lived or a ew years beore

moving to Orkney. He received his BA in Metalwork and 3-D Design rom the Camberwell

School o Art in London and now lives and works in Perthshire.

Since childhood MacDonald has been ascinated by Scotlands rivers, rugged coastline, and

shing traditions. He translates the colours, textures and movement o what he sees into unique, contemporary works o art made rom pewter, copper, brass and gold lea using traditional

metalwork techniques. My artistic endeavour is to observe and capture feeting moments o

nature, he says. I try to express an emotional response to something very private: a moment

    shared between man and nature.

Capturing a moment in metal also refects the shs ability to stay motionless. This contrasts

with their explosive speed o turn and strike, the artist says. They have a pure, aerodynamic

orm that is engineered or speed. It is hard and glinting the same attributes as metal.

Using tools that he creates himsel or each piece, MacDonald hand-pierces the relies in

pewter, and then taps in the scales and individual markings and details. The colour o the

patination is then achieved with gold lea and enamel, and nally sealed with hot lacquer orbeeswax. This technique suits the underwater palette perectly and lends an aura o age.

In recent years, MacDonald has undertaken shing expeditions around the world that have

resulted in artworks o even more species, including blue marlin, yellown tuna, red snapper,

humpback and sperm whales. These are eatured alongside his ever-popular depictions o

salmon, permit and mackerel. However, his avourite sh remain the aggressive small brown

trout rom moorland lochs, which match the thrill o having a good bonesh on the line.
