Excalibur Excalibur is written in a style of a British march reminiscent of Edward Elgar’s Pomp
and Circumstance with its very elegant trio. The composer, Jay Chattaway, was a resident composer for the US Navy Band in the 70’s and composed music for film and television, most notably for the Star Trek Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series.
A resident of Malibu, his daughter, Amy, was a member of the Samohi Bands in the early 90’s. Mr. Chattaway has also been a two-time conductor of SMMUSD’s annual musical showcase “Stairway of the Stars.”
JoyFrank Ticheli’s Joy describes his feelings when his first child was born. As he describes
his piece: “Above all, Joy is an expression of its namesake: simple unabashed joy. The intense feelings that most any father would feel on such a day were, in my case, accompanied by a simple little tune which grabbed hold of me in the hours preceding her birth, and refused to let go throughout the day and many days thereafter.”
Denbridge WayDenbridge Way is one of many very popular works composed for school bands by
James Swearingen. Typical of Mr. Swearingens works, it is well orchestrated with very catchy themes, and exciting percussion parts.
A Simple CelebrationA Simple Celebration was commissioned by the Bath High School Band in Lima, Ohio.
A very energetic work, it is particularly challenging for the brass and percussion requiring advanced technique. It is a fine example of a work composed to introduce student musicians to the demands of advanced band literature.
GreensleevesGreensleeves is a traditional English song, considered one of the oldest pieces of music
in our Western Culture. The title derives from the lyrics that speak of a lover’s lament over his lady’s cruel treatment of him, clad in a dress with green sleeves.
This very famous melody has been adapted in several different ways throughout its history. This arrangement by Alfred Reed highlights the rich sound of the clarinets, and contrasts the Woodwinds and Brass sections.

The Light Eternal Swearingen’s The Light
Eternal was commissioned by the Orrville High School Concert Band in Orrville, Ohio. This work is programmatic, meaning that it is descriptive, or tells a story.
The Light Eternal describes the events on February 3, 1943 aboard the S.S. Dorchester, an American troop transport ship, sunk by a German U-boat torpedo in the icy waters off of the coast of Greenland. 605 out of the 904 men aboard perished. Among those lost were four Army Chaplains, each of a different faith, each called to the same duty
The testimony of the survivors tells the story best; “As overcrowded lifeboats capsized, as rafts drifted away empty and men milled around on deck on the ragged edge of panic, the only fragment of hope came from these four men… and when the life jackets were gone, they gave away their own.”
As the survivors swam away, they remember the chaplains standing – their arms link-braced against the slanting deck. They were praying; words of prayer in Latin, Hebrew and English, addressed to the same God.
The Light Eternal, based on the well-known hymn God Of Our Fathers, is a reflective work that musically recounts this magnificent story.
Danse BohémienDanse Bohémien is inspired by the many great can-cans, gallops, and quick-steps that
populate the music repertoire. Among the composer Randall D. Standridge favorites is Pas Redouble by Camille Saint-Saens because of its unbridled energy and boisterous fun. This is the spirit the composer sought to capture in Danse Bohémien.
PageantPageant was commissioned by the American Band Masters’ Association and completed
in January of 1953. It is Vincent Persichetti’s third work for band. It opens in a slow tempo with a three-note motive in the horn that is used throughout both sections of the piece. The slow chordal introduction is succeeded by a lively “parade” section introduced by the snare drum. In the final portion of the work, the two principal subjects are developed simultaneously to a lively climax.

Overture for Band Op. 24Originally titled Nocturno, the Overture for Band was composed by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartoldy in 1824 when he was only 15 years old. He composed it for the resident wind ensemble at Bad Doberan, a seaside resort in northern Germany. He was vacationing there with his family when he heard the group perform. The original instrumentation was 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 1 trumpet, and English bass horn (an instrument that is no longer used today). He later rescored it for 23 winds and percussion in 1838 and retitled it Ouvertüre Für Harmoniemusik (Overture for Band).
This edition was adapted for the Modern Concert Band based on the 1838 score by Robert J. Garafolo for the United States Army Band, Washington D.C.
Ancient and Honorable Artillery CompanyThe Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts is the oldest
chartered military organization, and the march Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company was commission by them in 1924. John Philip Sousa included their marching song “Auld Lang Syne” in the composition. The Samohi Marching Band performed this march in the London New Year’s Day parade in 2007. We have included a fife and drum tune introduction: White Cockade, said to have been played when the colonial militia marched on to Concord to confront the British Troops in April of 1775.
Irish Tune and Shepherd’s HeyAn eccentric personality to say the least, Percy Grainger was a music figure of
international renown. Born in Australia in 1882, his early piano training was with his mother and Louis Pabst prior to studying in Germany for six years. Upon receiving acclaim as a performer in London late in 1900, Grainger began a performance career that provided the opportunity to travel throughout the world. After making England home for some years, he came to America in 1915, and eventually became a citizen in 1919. Self-taught in composition, his style was one of innovation, using irregular meter, a wide variety of instrumental color combinations, and experimentation with electronic music.
The Irish Tune is based on a tune, known widely as “Danny Boy”, collected by a Miss J. Ross of New Town, Limavaday, County Derry, Ireland, and published in “The Petri Collection of Ancient Music of Ireland” in 1885. The original setting by Grainger was an a capella version for mixed voices, which was much admired by Edward Grieg, with whom Grainger developed a strong friendship. An orchestral version followed and the military band version was completed in 1918. Grainger’s knowledge of instrumental voicings lends a richness to the sound and a blending of the interwoven melodies. The score is unique in that the principal melody is found on the top staff even though written in bass clef. The treble and counter melodies are found in the two staffs below.

Shepherd’s Hey Shepherd’s Hey was scored for wind band in 1918. The word ‘Hey’ denotes a particular
figure in Morris Dancing. Morris Dances are still danced by teams of ‘Morris Men’ decked out with bells and quaint ornaments to the music of the fiddle or ‘the pipe and tabor’ (a sort of drum and fife) in several agricultural districts in England. The tune of Shepherd’s Hey is similar to the North English air The Keel Row that is very widely found throughout England. The ‘hey’ involves the interweaving of generally two lines of dancers, which may be symbolized by Grainger’s use of two parallel lines of music at the opening of the composition, rather than a simple statement of a theme that then moves into variants.
Mass“Bernstein composed Mass, on commission, to memorialize John F. Kennedy, America’s
first Catholic president. The occasion was the grand opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in 1971.
“Bernstein chose the structure of the Roman Catholic Mass, complete with a celebrant playing the central role. But this was a far cry from your ordinary Mass. Bernstein used the traditional Mass as a framework on which to hang all of his beliefs and questions. The music embraces Broadway and opera, rock ballads and blues, with a narrative that blends Hebrew and Latin texts.
“Provocative and innovative to some, appalling to others, Mass is first and foremost a celebration of human faith, but it also questions the relevance of ceremonial rituals and immutable “truths” in an increasingly faithless modern world. Audiences leapt to their feet at the premiere, reacting to a work that felt so anti-establishment and so real.
“To me, Mass contains the essence of Bernstein as a complex man and artist. Sure, the music is intoxicating, but beneath the showiness on the surface is a profound statement of faith. Bernstein was a nimble composer. He moved comfortably between high art and pop culture, not confined by stylistic boundaries. This was long before “crossover” became trendy.
“Today, 45 years after its world premiere, Mass seems even more vital and relevant. Political volatility, an unpopular war seemingly without end, and our ongoing struggle as individuals to find faith and spirituality in contemporary society — this was the backdrop for Bernstein’s portrayal of a modern-day crisis of faith. And while the music and the text may have less shock value to our contemporary ears, the message of Mass has enduring significance.”
-Marin Alsop (Bernstein protégé)

Transcendent JourneyBorn and raised in
Buffalo, New York, Mr. Galante received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in trumpet performance from SUNY at Buffalo in 1992. That same year he was one of nineteen people across the country to be accepted to the University of Southern California’s Film Scoring Program. He studied with the late Jerry Goldsmith, who won an Academy Award for The Omen. In 1999 he moved to California to pursue a career in film composition and orchestration.
Mr. Galante has composed music for the films, Channels, The Prince of Venice, The Great Gabble and additional music for Scary Movie 2. He served as orchestrator for the films Amusement, Loft, L’ennemi public no. 1, Max Payne, Instinct de Mort, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, The Eye, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Perfect Holiday, Live Free or Die Hard, 3:10 to Yuma, The Invisible, The Tuxedo, and many others.
In 2005 and 2008, Mr. Galante’s recent compositions, Resplendent Glory and Transcendent Journey were both commissioned by and dedicated to Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft and the Hofstra University Symphonic Band.
A Bohemian in BlueThe 2015 Samohi Viking Marching Band’s featured show, titled “A Bohemian in Blue”,
is one of the most widely appreciated and loved field shows in recent years. It’s origin comes from the 2015 arrangement by Ohio based arranger Shane Kelbley, and was originally featured in the Bands of America show “A Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue Shades” by Dripping Springs H.S. (TX) Marching Band in 2015.
Based on three major eclectic works, “A Bohemian in Blue” features the music of George Gershwin, wind band composer Frank Ticheli, and the 80’s rock group Queen. This mashup, the musical genre encompassing songs that consist entirely of parts of other songs, was well received by both audiences and adjudicators this season, and has left a mark with our current students and staff.
Tonight’s concert version, led by drum major Mira Baum, will be performed by our wind and percussion students, with the acknowledgment of the great contribution by our color guard performers this past marching band season.
