2. What Is BYOD? BYOD STANDS FORBRING YOUR OWN DEVICE WHEN STUDENTS BRING THEIR OWN ELECTRONIC COMPUTING DEVICES TO SCHOOL, THE BENEFITS GO FAR BEYOND THE CLASSROOM! 3. BYOD in Action 4. BYOD in Action 5. WORKFORCE-READY STUDENTSMOBILE DEVICES ARE EVERYWHERE, INCLUDING THE MODERN WORKFORCE, SO WHY NOT TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT RESPECTFUL AND APPROPRIATE USE OF MOBILE DEVICES TODAY? IF THIS DOESNT HAPPEN IN SCHOOL, WILL IT HAPPEN AT ALL? 6. COLLABORATION WITH BYOD, STUDENTS CAN COLLABORATE WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM WALLS. DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR WORKING IN A TEAM ENVIRONMENT WILL ALSO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE. IT IS A STANDARD PRACTICE IN BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATIONS AND KEY TO ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT. 7. LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WALLSOF COURSE, CELL PHONES AND OTHER HANDHELD DEVICES ARE HANDY FOR RECORDING LECTURES OR FOR STUDENT RESPONSE SYSTEMS IN DISCUSSIONS OR ACTIVITIES. HOWEVER, THEY ALSO HELP STUDENTS CONNECT WITH PEOPLE AND PLACES OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM, ALLOWING THEM TO EXPERIENCE DIVERSITY AND PRACTICE DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP WHILE LEARNING GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, AND OR ANOTHER CORE CURRICULAR SUBJECT.Sample lesson plans and training videos can be found at http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collection.jsp?id=766. 8. PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTIONIMPLEMENTING A BYOD PROGRAM MEANS TEACHERS CAN MONITOR STUDENT PROGRESS AND GIVE INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION TO STUDENTS WHEN NEEDED, IN REAL TIME!Each student will have an individual pin or password to protect his or her account (and its activity) from gawkers. Privacy is important! 9. COST SAVINGS THE LONG-TERM FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF A DISTRICT-WIDE BYOD PROGRAM ARE EASY TO PREDICT BASED ON THESE FACTS: BYODDISTRICT-OWNED MODEL The eliminated cost of the device purchase The cost of a mobile management system Cost of each device The cost of recycling /replacing devices Warranty plans IT time and labor in managing the programMaaS360, 2013 10. HOW MOBILE DEVICES ARE BEING USED NOW 11. INCREASED ENGAGEMENT in DIFFERENT KINDS OF LEARNING 12. What People Need to Learn according to ISTE (1 of 2) The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has created National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S) that encompass a full range of technology competencies. The NETS standards include CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE TECHNOLOGY AND THEIR EXISTING KNOWLEDGE TO GENERATE NEW IDEAS, PRODUCTS, OR PROCESSES. COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY, BOTH IN PERSON AND AT A DISTANCE, AND TO COMMUNICATE IDEAS EFFECTIVELY TO MULTIPLE AUDIENCES USING NEW MEDIA. RESEARCH AND INFORMATION FLUENCY. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE A VARIETY OF DIGITAL MEDIA TO LOCATE, ORGANIZE, ANALYZE, AND EVALUATE INFORMATION FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES. 13. What People Need to Learn according to ISTE (2 of 2) CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING, AND DECISION MAKING. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEFINE PROBLEMS, PLAN AND CONDUCT RESEARCH, AND IDENTIFY SOLUTIONS OR APPROPRIATE DECISIONS USING DIGITAL TOOLS AND RESOURCES. DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP. STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN LIFELONG LEARNING AND SHOULD PRACTICE SAFE, LEGAL, AND ETHICAL USE OF INFORMATION AND DIGITAL TOOLS. TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS. STUDENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS, SELECT AND USE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS EFFECTIVELY, AND BE ABLE TO TROUBLESHOOT SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS.U. S. Department of Education, 2013 14. Implementation Timeline and Budget WE WOULD LIKE TO IMPLEMENT THIS PROGRAM STARTING IN THE FALL OF 2013. STRATEGIES, WITH BENCHMARKS ESTABLISHED TO ENSURE 75% MINIMUM INTEGRATION BY THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR. WE WILL RE-EVALUATE AND SET NEW GOALS AT THAT TIME.
