For the grace of God has appeared which offers salvation to all people. (Titus. 2,11)
By Fr. Gabriel
On this first Sunday of our civil year, we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has come down from heaven for our salvation. Today, He has manifested himself to all the peoples and nations of the world represented by the wise men of the East.
Our mother, the Catholic Church, in her liturgy, celebrates three special moments of the manifestation of Our Savior. The first, is the one we celebrate today, the Epiphany before the wise men from the East (manifestation to the pagans), the second Epiphany is found in the Baptism of the Lord (manifestation to the Jews) and the third Epiphany is found at the wedding at Cana (manifestation to his disciples).
At the beginning of the 4th century, the ancient feast of the Epiphany brought together these three episodes in a single celebration. Later, in Rome, the commemoration of that triple epiphany was distributed over three different liturgical days.
The liturgical celebration of the feast of the Epiphany is considered one of the oldest, most likely the second after the celebration of the feast of Easter. It began in the East and then moved to the West in the fourth century.
Saint Matthew is the only one who speaks of the Magi in Sacred Scripture (2:1-12) explaining that they were from "the east", an area that for the Jews were the territories of Arabia, Persia, or Chaldea. the ninth century began to spread that their names were Gaspar, Melchor and Baltazar ".
Tradition called the magi kings in reference to Psalm 72 (10-11) which says, “The kings of the west and of the islands will pay tribute to him. The kings of Arabia and Ethiopia will offer him gifts. Before him all kings will bow down and all nations will serve him”
The gifts that the Magi from the East offer to the child Jesus contain the Christological message of his identity, the gold for the royalty of Christ, the incense for the divinity of Jesus and myrrh, a substance that was used to embalm corpses and a symbol of the Lord's humanity.
God and our Father, creator, and owner of all that exists, we ask that, through your wisdom, which you send us by the grace of the Holy Spirit, we go out to meet Jesus Christ seeking him with sincerity of heart, that we can offer him the best gifts of our life. May he be the light that guides our faltering steps in this world until we reach the eternal bliss of Heaven.
