TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restora-on of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by

then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was

med to begin at three o’clock everywhere, and included the op on of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is in-creasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be be er to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highligh ng the Easter Com-munion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ’s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ’s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradi on is rich and varied, and we are s ll in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things.

Why do we call the day “good”? The English and Dutch lan-guages share this name, and its origin stems from the name “God’s Friday.” The tradi onal name for the day in La n is Fe-ria VI in Parasceve, which translates as “The Sixth Day of the Week of Prepara on.” Other languages make do with “Holy Friday.” In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it “Long Friday,” a good descrip on for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal!

The Caritas Corner Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in action in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs – in “getting back on their feet.” Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been disbursed – again, as a result of your tremendous generosity.

Throughout the year we are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us identify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, 210-857-1115.

All donations are tax deductible under SFDP’s 501(c) (3) designation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund ac-

cepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can also be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474

Again, thank you for your generosity and support and we look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to help our brothers and sisters in need.

San Francescani Society

two small vases of flowers. Their name and who requested them will be acknowledged in the Sunday bulle n. The check should be made payable to Flowers by Grace and given to Rose Marie. Thank you for your help in remembering your loved one and making our church look beau ful.
