To You Who Are Faithfully Serving withUs:

Dr. Tetsunao Yamamori, Director ofInstitute of World Studies of MilliganCollege, has conducted a study ofChr is ti an chu rche s and chu rche s ofChrist in Central Brazil by the request ofthe BCM President Sanders. Upon hisrecommendation as to how to enhancechurch growth in central Brazil and as aresult ofmuch prayer and consideration, the following decisions were made inconcurrance with th e BCM Trustees an dfellow-missionaries.

First: to continue to develop th eBrasilia church into a self-propagating,self-sustaining, self-governing churchwhich will be an example of a MotherChurch, correlating her activities towardchurch planting and church growth int he F ed er al D is tr ic t o f B razi l.

Second: to complete the constructionof the Brasilia buildings in 1976.Th ird: to es tab li sh a church growthcenter of research and training forevangelism and church extension.

Four th : Ru th an d I will continue towork inBrasilia to accomplish these aimsand objectives. Dale and Carol will takea term of gr aduat e study at School ofWorld Mission/Institute of ChurchGrowth, Fuller Theological Seminary,Pasadena, California, and return toBrazil by July, 1976. Other missionariesmay be cooperating in this development, both in Brasilia and a paral le l workbased in Goian ia Dr Te t sunaoYamamori has promised to assist in thecapacity of church growth consultant.

Fifth: to further accomplish our aims, the Goiania properties will be sold andthe funds used for the development ofth e Brasilia Cen te r, and over-all fieldgoals.Knowing that with all our labors andplans, only God can give the increase, weseek your prayers in these efforts.

VOL. XXVI OCTOBER SEPTEMBER, 1975 NO 5

RENEWAL OF VISION - A TIME TO DECIDEThe 13th Hour

Do we always wait until the 13thhour? It ha s taken 25 years ofexperimenting at church planting andevangelizing to ome to a new point ofdecision. Brief surveys seem to indicatethat although there have been plantedsome 20 churches in central Brazil, th eactual growth rate has been tremendously low.

Special ConsultationThrough consultation with Dr. Ted

Yamamori, Director of Institute ofWorld Studies at Milligan College, wea re s tudying plans to increase ourgrowth rate, evangelize, integrate andmultiply churches. The plan will includeextending the church into homes andrenewal of personal evangelism. Alongwith th is , p la ns are underway toestablish a Chu rc h Growt h ResearchCenter in Brasilia and a t raining centerfo r Chu rch E xte nsio n. T he se recentdecisions bring much closer a fulfillment,a dream of 30 years ago, of establishingth e church in th e new (then only a markon the map federal capital of Brazil.

Missionary CooperationThis decision includes transferringinvestments and properties in Goiania toBrasilia for the purpose of developingthis proposed center. It is hoped for a

revival in church planting and extension. This year, we willcomplete a survey andchart church growth from 1948 through1975. In this, al l missionaries of Brazilar e cooperating. Bruce Colson iscontracted to do the charting of thisgrowth. He will be finishing languageschool in 1975 and plans to work in newchurch planting, following studies.

M i ss io na ri es a nd B ra zi li an s h av emade many sacrifices since th ebeginning of the work to win souls,es tabl i sh churches, and de ve lo p atraining center. This move is especiallyaimed to continue this program, bu t withspecific objectives toward a new plan ofmo th er c hu rc he s, c hu rc he s in homes.

by L. David Sandersand aimed at discipleship and developingmature leaders .Dale McAfee wil spend a period oftime at School of World Mission fo rhelping reach these objectives. Ingeneral, we are heartened by theresponse ofour trustees and friends.Weall ask our brethren to pray with us toth is end.

    DifficultiesWe foresee similar difficulties to

those already encountered and t he t es twill come as we get down to the actualwork of carrying out plans and puttingstrategies into practice. We pray we canstand firm in this experiment ofreachingl ives for Chr is t. We already have somemen who ar e being trained for a moreconcentra ted plan of evangelism andintegration in the central church andoutlying areas.

We Seek the Timing of GodWe have many problems inleadership. A person can press at the

wrong time and get the wrong answer orhe can work on people. There is need fora sense of timing. It is not possible tolearn it, read it, or lecture on it . Thereneeds to be an awareness o f G od s willand purpose and although we have failedat times , we feel we have found it atother times. We cannot force, in aChristian manner, the pace or speed ofGod, but be ready to work within Hiswill. We can force issues, bu t then ge t ind ra ma ti c s itu atio ns a nd th e dramatics itua tion can somet imes kill th e spirit, cause division, and des troy faith.

    W e S ee k MobilizationWe seek mob il iz at io n o f every

volunteer of th e whole church. We rejectth e idea of only b ishops and deaconsworking, but rather the employment ofevery believer in the service of theKingdom. This has been impossible tocarry ou t to date, bu t ou r aim is todevelop this plan through a discipleshipsystem, thus cutting down unemployment in th e Church .

To Jo this we will need to s tudy theproblem of incentives at every level oflife as well as what brings about the lossof interest or falling away of anybeliever. This will cost less to keep onein the church, than it would to bring oneback once he has gone out of theChristian community.

ResponsibilitiesResponsiblities are accepted manytimes for carrying out projects. Perhapsthese are good or bad. Although leaders

take no vote to oppose these activities, they kill the work by sleeping on the jobor through lack of preparation forleadership. This can be true amongmissionaries as well as national leaders.Bringing cooperation and coordinationout of each disciple and helping him seehe is being fairly treated so as to ge t hisconsent and action is not a lways easy.We hope and pray to develop a growingChristian community and fellowship freefrom power politics and opposit ion togrowth.

Aims for Growth (Objectives)First, we plan to complete a survey

and study of the first quarter centurygrowth of churches of Christ (Christian)churches in Brazil .Second, we plan to analyze victories, problems and failures.

Third, we hope to lay a foundationplanfor developingthe work along linesnecessary for church growth at themaximum level.

Fourth, it already appears our basicproblem is dedication, incentive, andwork at th e task of church plantingFifth, we plan to place specialemphasis and investment into developing the Brasilia Church Center and twoor more house churches annually in th eimmediate apartment block areas andtwo or more house churches annually insatelli te (suburbs) areas. When thesehouse chur ches grow they will thendecide steps necessary to build templesor centers fo r their meetings. In do ing th is, we hope to adapt thesechurches to th e culture an d th e needs ofeach area. The immediate area will bechannelled into the cent ral church whilein the outlying suburbs we will seek todevelop an individual mother churchplan for each area.
