The messages wereinspiring and edifying, th e meetingplace was beaut iful, the food was good, and the attendance was strong. Underthe leade rship of J. REMARKS FROM RUTHL. D av id a nd I have been back inBrasilia just a few short weeks. It was a

thrill to us a s v ariou s missionar ies andBrazilian Christians came to th e airportin the early morning hours to give us ajoyous welcome. The only problem weencountered on the trip was th ecancelling of the big 747 flight fromGuatemala City because of t he e ne rgycrisis. This produced some confusion intransferring baggage, at the lastminute, to another plane...19 suitcasesw ere left in Panama. One of thosesuitcases was mine, with my personalclothes and items needed on th e trip.Fortuna te ly the next afternoon after myarrival, it wa s located and sent downfrom P a n a m a

Back in Brasi lia, we ar e once againgetting used to the heat, washing incold wat er , e at in g rice and beans, having people in and out, making th emany decisions that need to be made, get ting involved in the end of the yearprograms of graduation and Christmas -and enjoying every minute of it. Ourhousehold is even getting into a sort ofo r d e r now.

One interesting new development ishaving to stand in line for meat...thenonly be ing allowed to buy four poundsand having to pay $1.50 a pound for it

A LIGHTNING IMPRESSIONBrazil is still beautiful. I t is also ho t

and humid even a t Christmas and NewY e a r s .I just spent two very nice weekswith my parents and the Brazilianbrethren. I t had been three yea rs a ndfive months since the folks returned toBrazil and th e same length of time sinceI had seen them. I t was a real joy, inmany ways, to be back in Brazil.I was two days late a rr iv ing, due toth e fuel shortage. I had a hectic time, and gained much experience in gettingover there...finally The day after Iarrived in Ceres, I started preaching, and did so for five nights. We had arevival. My Portuguese came easierthan I expected and everyone assuredme I had done well. The mee tings werenot as well attended as we had hopedan d we ha d no dec is ions, but God waswith us and we feel H e will use th emessages in His own way .I graduated from Brazilian secondary school in 1969 and was a Boy Scout, also, so I have many friends in Ceres. Itried to find as many of them as

    by Steven McAfeepossible, because I wanted to tell themabout Chr is t. I had never spoken tosome of them about the L ord . M osthave gone away to school...some aredoing nothing...some are married...andsome h a v e died w i t h o u t C h r i s t . Icouldn't find very many of them. Theones I did find pu t off making a decisionab ou t t he Lord till some l at er d at e. Ipray that God will help them to come toknow Chr is t a s their Savior...soon

We went, as a family, to the AllBrazil Churches of Christ MissionariesConference, held near Goiania. It wasacclaimed as on e of th e best. CarlKetcherside and Reuel Lemmons di d afantastic job It was very refreshing. My trip to Brazil was great, butshort It was unexpected, also I havebeen planning to take my internship inBrazil, a requirement for my A.B.degree in Bible-Missions fromManhattan Christ ian College. This willbecome a real ity this year. With God'shelp I will be back in Brazil in late Mayor early June to wo rk for the summer, along with my father, mother, and

    CERES TO BUILD

Dale McAfee and Ruth Sanders look at some of the plans for the Ceres Churchbuilding. Maria Joyce is in background. The first meeting house for the Igreja de Cristo de Monte Siao will be built thisyear. We expect to erect a part of th e building sufficient to accommodate meetings by

th e first of August, when we will be going on furlough. According to the decision madein our Field Association meeting, we will construct th e building on a matching fundsbasis . The members, most with very l imited means, are giving faithfully. Theblueprints are being drawn up and estimates made. We will let you know the expectedt o t a l n ee de d a s soon a s we c a n - s e v er a l t h o us a n d d o l l a r s will b e needed S e n d fundsdesignated for the Ceres Church to: Brazi l Christian Mission, Joe Means, Treasurer,P. 0 . brother, Phi lip . So far, I have hal f of mysupport. Your prayers and any financialhelp will be appreciated. I need 600yet.

There have been many changes inBraz il s in c e I left. Most h av e b ee n fo rgood...some bad. The cost of living thereis higher than in the States now, almosteveryone smokes, and, due to Americanmovies and wha t t hey hear about theU.S., young people are t rying to imitateAmerican boy-girl relat ions. There isalso a lot more spiritism now. Thisreligion entices many Christians with itslegalism and mysticism, causing them tofall away. Weaker Christians are scaredsilly by Mediums and other Spiritualists. These are among th e manyproblems faced by missionaries in Braziland I will have to face them dur ing myinternship.

Some of the changes for the betterare th e advances in technology, decrease in i ll ite ra cy a nd bettereducational methods. The governmentis starting massive e ffo rts to providebetter education for all people. They ar eopening th e Amazon Valley andgenerally raising the standard of l ivingin Brazil .

Even though I had lived in Brazil, Iexperienced culture shock when Ireturned. Of course. I soon got over it,but it reminded me that Brazil is s ti ll a nenigmatic giant of undeveloped power. If p roperly seeded and nurtured withthe Gospel, this great nation could oneday be a world leader in sendingm is si on ari es f or th in to th e u tte rm o stparts of th e world to proclaim theprecious Gospel of our wonderful Lord

    WHAT ISHAPPENING

IN BRAZILby Dale McAfeeBrazi l is on th e move.. .growing byleaps and bounds. There is much

discussion as to w he th er or no t Brazilcan now be considered a developednation. One of th e implicationsconsidering Brazil a developed nation isthat sh e shall have more sway inin ternat ional commerce and moreinfluence politically in internationalaffairs. That may be hard toaccept.. .like when a teen-ager becomesan adult and goes out into the world onhis own . .. bu t it is one of those thingsthat normally happens and we expect itto take placeRecently, the Missionary Information Bureau (the January bulletin)published a symposium by evangelicalmissionaries from th e U.S. an d Europedescribing ways that Brazil is differentnow than it was 10 years ago. Theydiscussed what is happening inmissions, what should happen, what thefuture may hold, and what type ofmissionary work will be needed in thenext 5 to 15 years. The first thing mentioned was thegreat territorial colonizationspurred bythe building of roads (Brasilia-Belem -1,500 miles of new highway almostcompleted, Trans-Amazon road underconstruction, and Perimetral North roadto be begun June 1974). TheTrans-Amazon road alone, opens th eway for colonizat ion of an a rea l arge rthan th e countries of France, Greece.Sweden, Italy and Spain all pu ttogether Until now this land, rainforest and Indian trib al h un tin ggrounds, has been dormant with verysparse population.IContinued on page 2]

Many prayers were answered whentwo young men and their families unitedwith the Brasilia congregation to give ofthemselves in this harves t field This isa big step forward in the life of th eBrasilia congregation, and a directresult of a new spirit of prayer, faith, and hard work. A new class for youngmarried couples has been ini tiated andthere ar e now classes for each agegroup of children headed by teacherswho ar e interested and willing to work .Five of these teachers are taking aspecial t eacher 's t ra in ing course twonights weekly. Ther e ar e new g roupsgoing out in prayer and visitation. Biblestudies and prayer meetings are beingheld in th e homes of be li e ve r s a nd non-believers. Eighteen members ar eactively enrolled in th e Theology byExtens ion Course P e rs on a l E v angelism . and attendance at everyservice is increasing.

Waldir Fires Garcia is the f ir st m a nto be called by th e congregation to takecharge of the evangelistic program, thepreaching and the outreach of thechurch. Waldi r ha s had seminary andunive rsi ty t rai ni ng , and ha s taught inthe public Junior High Schools. Hecomes from Anapolis, Goias, where he

was pastor of the 2nd Christian Churchfor three years. His wife, Maria de Vaz,is taking an active part in women'sgroups, in visitation and as a substi tuteteacher for two children's classes. Theyhave two children, Walma - three yearsold. and Walmir - one year old.

Reinaldo Pereira SUva has returnedto Brasi lia after a t hree year te rm ofstudy and work at Intermountain BibleCollege, Grand Junction, Colorado. Heis currently working at th e NationalHotel where he helped to welcome theHenry Ford and Mrs. Pat Nixon partieson their respect ive visits to Brasiliarecently. Reinaldo helps in visitat ion, asa subst i tu te teacher fo r the Bibleclasses, and in preaching and witnessingin th e services a t church an d in homes. His wife, Aparecida, is active in thewomen's group integration andteaches th e new class of 10-11 year oldsin Sunday School. UP-TO-DATE ON THE COW PROJECTThis term o f s er v ic e h as not affordedus sufficient t ime to expand the cow andheifer project - a program designed to

stimulate self-help among the Brazilianrural people - but we have worked tokeep it going. In 1970, when wereturned to the field after furlough, there were 20 contracts in effect. Manyhave matured until we now have only 8contracts in effect. Three wer e lostbecause th e people who r ec eiv ed th ecows sold them and u sed the money topay debts or as living expenses andthen had no way to r epay t he mission. The saddest part of these losses is thatthose who sold th e cows and li ved upthe proceeds damaged their own futureand that of their children by liquidatinga capital investment. Two of th eremaining eight contracts are at SaoLui z d o Norte, tw o w ith S r. L az aro a ndfour at Corrego do Sapato - Rio Bonito.

Recently th e Brazilian governmentse t up rigid controls for cattle raising.Packing houses had begun exportingbeef. Herds were being depleted andmeat disappeared from local markets. So, t he g ov ernment int erve ned . A s are su lt w e had to make a wr i t ten andregistered pasture rent contract withSr. Lazaro, then register the mission asa cat tl e r ai se r and acqu ire purchasedocuments for all the catt le owned likeevery one else was having to do. Sr.Lazaro is s ick and spends about half ofhis t ime in the hospi ta l, so he is not ableto take care of the business. H e w as

Sr. L az ar o w it h a cow he has oncontract. His illness has cos t him neariyever> thing he has, so the project can bea help to him in t hi s way .persuaded to g ive his power of attorneyto his son. Money from recentcontributions was used to buy morecows and calves a nd a dd ed to the herdon Lazaro's farm. Maturing contrac tshave a lso added to th e herd, as cows orheifers (in one case a young bull) werereturned to pay th e loans.

Our contractual terms of the projectwere altered last year to be morerealistic (less of an outright gift) afterconsultation with Bro . Virgi l Marshall, who visited us in March of 1973. Virgilwent with us on a trip to vi si t th e twoSao Luiz recipients of contracts, and. inspite of ou r accidentally dumping him ina shallow creek (he suffered only wet

and muddy clothes ) he came backen thused about his visit

With th e government pressure toorganize th e industry, prices dipped to acritical low in December , January, and February. Now that th e s car e isover, and pressure is relax ing, prices

Delfino t rea t s the navel of a smallcalf. He is one who repaid his contractear ly and continues to farm, owning hisown land. Delfino and his familycon t inue to bene f it from th e cowproject, as do some 23 others who havealready repaid th e loan.are beginning to go up rapidly. All thisleaves the mission with a small herd ofcattle, and us no t knowing exactly whatto do with t hem New mean s ofemploying t he pro ject will have to bedeveloped. We are seeking guidancefrom the Lord as we pass thistransitional stage and develop thisproject.

HAPPENING [cont'd from pg 1]Industrial expansion an d a 10%increase in gross national product werealso men tioned. All this has brought

about a new at t i tude o f ma te ri al ism a ndnationalism. The city people ar e moresofisticated, but sects such as SeventhDay Adventi st , J ehovah Witne ss andthe Spiritists are busy sowingconfusion. Churches begun by missionaries Q years ago are looking aftertheir own affairs more and beginning tosend, ou t missionaries to foreign fieldsthemselvesConsider these few thought-provoking excerpts from thesymposium. Th e gospel and man's need ar eunchanged. The commission is s ti ll GoYe ... .not send your tape recorder. I forsee th e need of that type ofmissionary work that will bes t t ra in th enationals to do thei r work, be itdisciplining individuals or small groups, offering Bible training by extension, orby training men in live situations. Themissionary who will be most effective inthe next 5. 10 or 15 years will be onewho knows the W ord of God, h as s om eexperience at home serving the Lord, has lots of empathy and one who canrelate spiritual truth to real life.

HOW HIGH IS THE SKY?or Where is Heaven?

by Dale McAfeeSammy, 6ne ofogR^^jeaF-old twin

sons, looked out the window as oiirplane reached cruis ing a lt it ude aft erTeaving Brasilia. Ohla, papai, estamosno ceu ' he exclaimed. In Brazil hepreferred to speak in Portuguese. It s alittle hard to translate, sinceceu means either sky or heaven, lets translate it, Look, Daddy, we're upin heaven That started me thinking.Where is heaypn? Of course, we have allT^ed'Cliat question and then put it inthe back of, or ent irel y out of, ourminds. Well, where is heaven, anyway? And is heaven w h e r e G od is?

Then Danny (also five), said to me aswe were walking to school the other dayand heard the sound of a jet far^^overhead When you up in an^Sairplane you go up where Jesus lives 'don't you. Daddy? He had also thoughtt ha t t he plane from Brasilia, leveled offat cruis ing a lt it ude , was parked inheaven. S t e w a r d e s s e s w a i t e d oneveryone. Music came th rough th esound system, the seats werecomfortable; everything a little boyneeded, or could imagine, was there. Isuppose that was convincing enough. But, of course, that particular heightis satisfying for only a short t ime. Theboys want to know more, and boys andmen want to explore farther. DeanEngland told a bunch of budding youngtheologians when I was at PhillipsUniversity graduate Seminary, thatsince the space explorations and man'swidened vis tas , we need to change ourterminology and refer to heaven asbeing out instead of up,...especiallysince to th e Chinaman ou r heaven wouldbe down and vice versa. Recently a localdive advertised that they and theircustomers were way out. And it was aRussian cosmonaut who took a little tripout in t h e 'h eaven s' an d cam e backsaying he had proven that God doesn'te xi st b ec au se h e h a d n t found Him.I wonder if we don't unconsciously'confuse God and His throne in glorywith His creation, and think of space, inthis mater ia l universe, as being God'sr e s i d e n c e a n d t h e r e f o r e h e a v e n isa round her e. .. somewhe re . And , some-'one will immediately assure us that Godis everywhere Being on cloud ninemust be close to, if not heaven. u e s e t ath e word /leaven. S o i /7,we're up

Some bel ieve in a hierarchy ofheavens. When you ar e in seventhheaven that is the most. How you getthere would be some special send-offand how you know you ar e there stillremains subject ive. Jewish traditiondoes refer to seven heavens. An d th eapos tl e Paul says he knew a man(himself?) who was caught up to thethird heaven perhaps in the body (IICor. 12:2). Which goes to prove thateven he, an apostle, wasn't overly-wellinformed as to whe re he aven is, or ifyou can go there in the body. Or maybehe just took it for granted that you canbe in heaven in the body, bu t because ofthe etheria l nature of said experience,he wasn't able to be sure how it tookplace - in bodily reality or a vision seenonly with the mind's eyes.

The word heaven is used quiteoften in th e plural (as if there areseveral and one can be distinguishedfrom another - maybe th e different oneshave different functions or purposes) inHoly Writ and out. In the beginningGod c re at e d t h e h e a v e n s and th eearth.. .and God said, 'L et t he re be afirmament in th e midst of th e w ate rsand let it separate t he water s from thewaters ' . . .and God made t h e f i rmamentand separat ed the wat er s which wereunder th e f irmament from the waterswhich were above th e firmament...andGod called t h e f ir m am e nt H e av enGenesis 1:1, 6, 7, 8.

From this point on the focus ofattention in the Holy Scriptures is uponthe place under the firmament (orheavens) where man lives. So there issomeplace above heaven (the sky), andthere is water there When you getthirsty you will be glad to know that. But then , t h a t shouldn ' t be toosurprising, for the r iver (or fountain) ofthe water of life flows by the throne ofGod (Revelations 21:1-7; 22:1-2).

To conclude for now, we hope yourstudy of heaven is not l im it ed toast ronomy, and that it will continue. Our emphasis most surely andsatisfyingiy can be that given by theApostle Peter, who said that th eheavens that now are (which werecreated long ago) will be dest royed andpass away with a loud noise , beingdissolved (II Peter 3:5-13). Accordingto the promise of God we wait for newheavens and a new e a r t h in whichrighteousness dwells (vs. 13). Oh whata glorious day (God's day, se e vs. 12)that will be . Will you be there?Preparations to be there ar e beingmade now by the saints that meettogether in Jesus' name (Jesus ofNazareth, th e Christ, Lord of Heavenand earth). Oh, don't you want to be int h a t n u m b e r ?

This past year as inflationspirals, the effects have not only beenfelt in th e United States, bu t also by th emissionaries in many foreign fields. Thishas been t r u e in Brazil as we havementioned in previous articles. Whath a s inflation m e a n t t o u s in Brazil? H e r ear e a few implica tions:

In th e large cities, where thousandsare turning to Christ, rents areoutlandish. The money spent on rentcan never be r ecuper at ed . This meansthat for many missionaries, workingwhere land cannot be obt ai ne d, wor kmay have to stop. Even in th e frontiersof the Transamazon, missionaries reportdifficulty in renting.

F o r those who can find land onwhich to build, cons t ruc tion cos ts aregoing up. However, looking on the goodside, the day the building is completedit ca n be sol d for 300% mor e than costs,a t least

    Surveys indicate that cars made inBrazil c o s t o v e r $4,000.00 for amedium-small car. This is the size yourm i s s i o n a r i e s use . A four-door F o r d o rDodge costs anywhere from 8,000.00 to10,000

The continuing education of missionar y children on th e field runs up to 1,200.00 a year pe r child. Trave l to th eUnited States, one-way, amounts to400.00 to 567.00 pe r adult , dependingon th e city. Medical doctors in Brazilcharge 25.00 per visit. Hereare some ways Brazilians make endsm e e t :The poor people don't live in or nearth e big cities, they prefer instead totravel 2-4 hours to reach their jobs inth e city each day . Those who do live inth e c it ie s, l iv e in shacks similar to achild's tree house, or a whole family willlive in one room. Many couples will wait(Continued on page 4)

    CERES MT . ZIONCHURCH

Construction began May 15. 1974 on th e firstpermanent building of the Ceres Mt. Zion Church. Blueprints were drawn up in April for a building which wouldhouse an auditorium an d four classrooms. Much o f th ework involved those interested in seeing th e churchbuilding become a rea lit y for the Lord. A civil engineerwho now lives in Goiunia, donated technical supervisionchurch members and others of th e co mmun ity d o natedmaterial f re ig ht a nd labor . In o rd er t ha t th e buildingcould be fini.shed sufficiently to serve as a meeting placebefore the McAfees f u rl o ug h m is s io n f un ds wereborrowed which will be repaid by th e congregation fromdes ignated offer ings. This was done in order to avoidspiraling costs on labor, materials and service whichwould result were th e co ns tru ctio n to stop while th eMcAfees ar e on furlough.

Dedication Day finally arrived for th e ne w buil ding onJuly 28, 1974. B es id es b ei ng th e first time th econgregation met in the new facil it ies, the special servicesalso served to se t apart new leadership and transferd ut ie s s o that t he w or k would c ont i nue s moot hly t hroughthe McAfees furlough. Many missionar ies and localpreachers participated in the meetings, as did L. DavidSanders who will serve as senior minister during th eMcAfees furlough, visiting the church one Sunday am o n t h .

T he services also served to give specialrecognition to th e v ario us lead ers in th e church an dalso to Steven and Philip McAfee, who had speci alresponsibilities in assistance and outreach. Manypeople participated in these services from variousother Christian churches such as th e Brasilia youthgroup, the Chris t s Youth singers who presenteds pe ci al mus ic .
