WeLCOMe to the Asahi british beach Polo Championships 2013. Last year the resolve of the players, guests and staff was tested to the full by Sandbanks being battered by severe weather on both days of the Championships. We have never received so many congratulatory messages after the event and I am so grateful to everyone for keeping smiling and making the most of the occasion. I only hope as you are thumbing through this edition that your hands are cold from clutching a glass of Asahi beer or champagne straight from the fridge rather than from the elements!

This year the Irish Beach Polo Team are in high spirits and determined to regain their title. Wales, England and Scotland will be keen to knock them off their perch. The night polo on Friday evening with superb Airstar lighting will be quite a spectacle. The Oakley International Beach Volleyball is increasingly popular and sees Olympians in both the English and Scottish team competing against each other.

We will be supporting Variety – the children’s charity this year. I hope you will all dig deep for the Charity Race and the auctions. Whilst Variety is a national charity there is a very strong local branch who will be receiving a famous Variety coach as part of the event.

As the sun goes down over our beautiful Jurassic Coast we turn from sport to the polo after-parties. On Friday evening Cocoloco will host arguable the biggest line up of DJs we have seen in the area. Amika will again host the closing party on Saturday night. Amika never fail to ‘raise the roof’ but in a Mayfair sort of way!

Finally a massive thank you to everyone for supporting the Championships that is now in its 6th year! From Steve who flattens the beach in the weeks building up to the event to our sponsors, Poole Council, our staff, players and of course those who choose to spend their hard earned money on buying tickets. We hope you have a great weekend and will join us again on 11/12 July 2014.

Last year we were blessed with amazing sunshine throughout. Congratulations to Jamie Morrison and the England team for winning the title last year. We are set for the very best beach polo at Sandbanks over the next few days. On paper there is little between the teams. On the day it will be down to teamwork and the performance of the ponies. We are also excited about the return of the Oakley International Beach Volleyball. Tyron Dawkins has been the inspiration behind the series for the last 4 years and we are extremely grateful to him and his team.

POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 | 98 | POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014

The first recorded game of Polo took place in 600 BC between the Turkomans and Persians (the Turkomans won).

In the 16th Century the game was firmly established in Persia, India and China with a recognized size ground of 300 metres long.

In 1850 British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur on the Burmese border with India. Twelve years later the first polo club in the world was formed by the tea planters in Manipur.

Later that year the Calcutta Polo Club, the oldest existing polo club, was founded. In 1869 Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, wrote an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game - known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The first polo club in England was formed in Monmouthshire.

Today, polo is played in 80 countries worldwide. It was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1939 and has now been recognised again by the International Olympic Committee.

Playing Arena. The ideal playing area is a boarded 90/45 metre arena. Goals are centred at opposite ends (3m wide by 4m high).

The Ball. An inflated ball of a sufficient size to prevent it being trodden into the sand but heavy enough for it to travel in the direction in which it is hit.

The Polo Pony. Any breed or size but needs to be fast, agile, robust and brave! They are protected by bandages on all four legs.

Players. Three players in each team. Number 1 is the striker, 2 is the centre and 3 is the back. A player may be substituted by someone of the same standard during the match if they are unable to finish the game. A player’s ability is measured by their Handicap. Minus 2 is a beginner to 10 Goal.

Umpires. There are two Umpires. One is in the stand and one mounted in the arena. There is also a timekeeper and a scorekeeper.

Length of Game/Periods. There are four periods (chukkas) of 61/2 minutes with intervals of 4 minutes after each period, except

after the second period where there is a 6 interval. However, periods may be shortened if it is considered to be in the interests of the welfare of the ponies. A hooter will be sounded 30 seconds before the end of the chukka. When the Umpire blows the whistle and stops play the clock is stopped. When a goal is scored, the Umpire shall signal by raising his arm but play continues.

Line of the ball. Crossing the line of the ball is the most frequent foul. The line of the ball, namely the imaginery line along which the ball travels, represents a right of way for the player following nearest the line. There are strict rules governing opponents’ entry in to the right of way in the interest of safety. The Nearside is the left side of the pony and the Offside is the right side of the pony.

Use of the Stick and the Ride Off. A player may hook or strike the stick of an opponent with the stick to prevent the opponent having a clean strike at the ball. The ride off is when 2 players make contact and try and push each other off the line of the ball.

Variety – the Children’s Charity aims to improve the lives of children and young people throughout the UK who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged. There is no better cause for Sandpolo 2014 to support. The main fund raising activity for the weekend is the Audi Q7 racing against the polo pony taking place on both days of the event.

Variety, the Children’s Charity has one aim; to improve the lives of children

and young people who are sick, disabled and disadvantaged throughout the UK.

Over the 63 years of existence, more than £211 million has been raised and

distributed to countless youngsters.

The Victoria Education Centre, Poole gives youngsters aged 6 – 19 years,

who have physical disabilities, an award winning specialist education

and helps to prepare them for their future lives.

Please help us to fund 4 Sporting Wheelchairs which

will allow these special youngsters to join in wheelchair hockey,

wheelchair football and wheelchair rugby in their sports hall in Branksome Park.

This allows them to take part in competitions around the county

which helps to boost their self esteem and to be involved in

activities that perhaps they wouldn’t normally be able to.

Project kudos TEAM EnglandJamie has played Polo for 23 years. He plays all over the world but is based at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. He enjoys the grass game but has become best known for his ability in the arena – on the sand and snow. He has Captained England at the O2 Polo against Argentina and has represented England at Sandbanks for the last 5 years. He is tactically astute, aggressive and rides an excellent ‘string’ of ponies. Jamie loves music and his favourite pony is still his first – Bella.

The Special Boat Service (SBS) is deployed at the forefront in the war against international terrorism, and theoperational intensity that these brave young men experience is both unrelenting and unprecedented.

The SBS Association has been in existence as a charitable organisation for the past 15 years and provides timely and discreet welfare, physical and emotional support to serving and retired members of the SBS.

Given the current operational tempo, and the inevitable casualties and fatalities that the SBS suffer,

both whilst deployed and in training, the SBSA has an increasingly important role to play. There are, sadly, a growing number of members and their dependents for whom, through physical or psychological injury, bereavement or adversity the SBSA now has a responsibility.

The role of the SBSA is, however, not limited to the injured and the bereaved but extends to all its members and their dependents, whatever their need. The SBSA also provides funding for the funerals, wakes and memorial services of those of its members who have died in service.

This all makes a significant difference to the morale of the men of the SBS, because they know that, should the worst happen, they and their families will be cared for as they would have wished.

We very much hope that you will be able help us to continue our vital work in caring for all members of this unique and very tight-knit family, and to ensure that all who look to us for help are able to continue to live their lives with dignity and with the reassurance that our support will not fail them.

Richard has been playing competitive polo since 2004. He spends the majority of his time in Gibraltar playing out of Santa Maria polo club in Sotogrande. His Silex polo team enters numerous low and medium goal competitions each year. Amongst Richard’s greatest achievements are winning the Spanish Championships for the last 4 years, winning the Sotogrande Gold Cup in 2012, the Cortina Gold Cup this year and representing Ireland in the FIP European Championships in 2012. He has played in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, South Africa, Dubai and China. This is his first time at Sandbanks.

Ricky CooperCLOGAUTEAM WALESRicky has been the Captain of the Wales Polo Team since its inception in 2008, the first official, HPA affiliated, polo team in the history of the country. The team has gone from strength to strength under Ricky’s leadership and Clogau’s support. Having turned his hand to Polo 11 years ago Ricky plays at Fifield and Ascot Park Polo Clubs. Chris Hyde has led Scotland only once before in an arena test match and is now looking forward to leading his team on the sand for the first time. He has played at Sand-banks twice before but representing England. Chris has captained England many times but with his strong Scottish roots means is able to play as a Scot. With the highest rated arena handicap in Europe Chris should adapt well to beach polo with powerful ball control and quick reactions. Phil said, ‘Rio 2016 is our ultimate focus, the VEBT and FIVB tour will be essential in building new partnerships in our bid for selection at the next Olympic Games, however it’s some time away so both Oliver and myself will take every opportunity to compete in highly competitive matches, with Australia being something

a little bit special!’.England’s opponents are formidable pairing, Aden Tutton and Kirk Pitman. Aden, a London 2012 Olympian said ‘we are really looking forward to the match, it represents so much when our nations compete. 200G (7OZ) CASTER SUGAR

500ML (2 CUPS) DOUBLE CREAM

100G (3½OZ)WHITE CHOCOLATE

Heat the sugar in a saucepan with a little water to approximately 120° degrees. Whisk the egg yolks (with an electric whisk if possible) for 2 minutes, then slowly pour on the hot sugar. Continue whisking until the yolks are cold and frothy (this is called a sabayon).

Melt the chocolate, allow to cool slightly and gently fold into the sabayon mixture. Semi-whip the cream and fold this into the mix. Add a shot of alcohol if you like either kirsch, brandy or Cointreau would go very nicely. Pour the mixture into small pots or into a cling film lined loaf tin and freeze overnight.

Remove from the freezer 15 minutes beforeserving, remove from tin and cut into thick slices.

We serve ours with cherry coulis bombs, griottine cherries and pistachio praline.

A polo pony is the term used for a horse used in the game of polo. They may be of any breed or combination of breeds, though many have a significant amount of Thoroughbred breeding. They are called “ponies”, but that is in reference to their agile type rather than their size. They require considerable training and ongoing conditioning. Players require several horses to play a polo match and so the average ‘string’ is between 4-6 ponies. A pony is considered experienced at 9 years old and can play into their 20s.

A well formed pony will usually be a ‘blocky’ Thoroughbred under 16 hands; square-shaped, wide in the chest, square behind. A heavier boned horse with a heavier foot is better.Despite this a good pony doesn’t have to look the part!

Because the pony is SO important to the polo player we honour the pony in the same way as the players. Throughout the Championships the Director of Polo will be looking out for the Best Playing Pony. Their behaviour in the pony ‘lines’ as well as their performance on the field(speed, agility, endurance and temperament) will be taken into consideration.
