1) SOIL PIPE

Means a pipe (not being a drain) which conveys soil

water either alone or together only with waste water

or rainwater or both.

2) WASTE PIPE

Means a pipe (not being a drain or overflow pipe)

which conveys waste water either alone or together

only with rainwater.

3) VENT PIPE

Means a pipe (not being a drain) open to external air

at its highest point, which ventilates a drainage

system either by connection to the drain or to a soil

pipe or waste pipe and does not convey any soil

water, waste water or rainwater.

DEFINITIONS

4) WASTE WATER

Means used water not contaminated by soil water

(solid waste) or trade effluent.

5) SOIL WATER

Means used water contaminated with solid waste or

trade effluent.

BASIC ARRANGEMENTS

Basic arrangements of soil, waste and vent pipe in

building:

1. Single stack system

2. One pipe system

3. Two pipe system

4. Modified system

NOTE:

The limit for measurement purposes, soil, waste and

vent pipe are measured BEGINNING from the

SANITARY FITTING to the FIRST MANHOLE from any point

ITEMS TO BE MEASURED

1) PIPEWORK

Types of materials used:

a. Cast iron (coated) to B.S 416

i. Medium grade

ii. Heavy grade

iii. Extra heavy grade

b. Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) pipes

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

ITEMS TO BE MEASURED

1) PIPEWORK (continued)

Pipes are measured in METRE stating the type and

nominal size, method of jointing and fixing (Clause

Q.8.1 – 4).

Normally at ground level, soil and waste pipe are laid

in trench or embedded in floor slab while at upper

floor level, pipes are fixed using pipe support i.e

hangers. Vertical main pipe or the stack is normally

located in service ducts in building and are fixed to

wall using brackets.

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

2) PIPE FITTINGS

Pipe fittings i.e branch, elbow etc. shall be measured in NUMBER

as

EXTRA OVER the pipe in which they occur.

Coated cast iron ‘Medium Grade’ pipe to B.S 416 and fitting

to B.S 1130 with rubber roll ring joint as described:

A. 50 mm diameter waste pipe fixed to wall with approved

brackets. - m

B. 100 mm diameter soil pipe fixed to ceiling including 12 mm

diameter mild steel hangers at 600 mm centers. - m

C. Extra over for 50 mm diameter bend. - NO.

D. Extra over for 100 mm upright ‘Y’ branch. - NO.

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

3) PIPE SUPPORT

Sometimes soil and waste pipe requires pipe support

especially when fixed under ceiling of concrete flat

roof (upper floor level) i.e hangers.

Q.12.1 Standard pipe support shall be given in the

description of the pipes stating the TYPE AND SPACING

of the support.

Q.12.2 Non-standard pipe supports shall be

described and ENUMERATED.

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

4) FITTINGS

a) Floor trap

b) Gully trap

Traps are measured in NUMBER stating the kind and

quality, nominal size and method of fixing.

EXAMPLE

Approved 75 mm cast iron floor outlet ‘S’ trap with 75

mm diameter chromium plated grating and frame

with one outlet for 75 mm diameter cast iron waste

and setting trap in concrete slab and jointing to pipes

(m/s). - NO.

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

5) TESTING

Measured as ITEM and stating the type of test required

etc.

( same as for cold water installation).

NOTE:

If the pipe is required to be laid in trench in the

ground, then an item must be measured for

excavation (SECTION V)

Page 21: Sanitary Plumbing Systemmeasurement

MEASUREMENT OF SOIL & WASTE PIPES

SECTION V : DRAINAGE

Drains

V.2 Excavation

Excavating pipe trenches shall be given in METRES

stating the starting level, the depth-range in

increments of 2.00 m and the average depth within

the depth-range to the nearest 0.25 m.

Excavating curved trenches shall be so described

irrespective of the radius.

Trenches to receive pipes not exceeding 200 mm

nominal size may be group together and so

described.

SECTION V : DRAINAGE

Drains

V.2 Excavation

Trenches to receive pipes exceeding 200 mm nominal

size shall be given separately stating the size of pipe.

EXAMPLE

Excavate trench for pipe not exceeding 200 mm nominal

size starting from ground level not exceeding 2.00 m

deep average 0.75 m deep.
