Dear Parent/Guardian:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you about specific provisions of the Elementary and Secondary

Education Act regarding Public School Choice. Program Improvement (P.I.) schools must offer parents of

eligible students the option of transferring to an available school within the District that has not been

identified as P.I. This transfer choice is called Public School Choice.

Public School Choice is a parent option and not a requirement. If you wish to remain at your home school,

no further action will be necessary.

The elementary schools listed below are identified as Program Improvement and are required to offer

Public School Choice for the 2013-14 school year:

El propósito de esta carta es informarle sobre las provisiones específicas de la Ley de educación primaria y

secundaria acerca de Opción para escuela pública. Las escuelas en Mejoramiento de Programa (P.I.)

tienen que ofrecer a los padres de alumnos que califiquen la opción de cambiarse a una escuela disponible

dentro del Distrito, que no haya sido identificada como P.I. Esta opción de cambio de escuela se llama

Opción para escuela pública.

La Opción para escuela pública es una opción de los padres, más no un requisito. Si desea que su hijo/a

permanezca en la escuela en donde asiste ahora, no tiene que hacer nada más.

Please see the attached report for academic achievement data for each school of choice. In addition, you

may access achievement data sorted by student groups (English language learners, students with disabilities

and Title I), by going to http://www.sausd.us. On the top tabs section hover over „Departments,‟ then click

on „Educational Services.‟ On the Educational Services margin, scroll down and click on „English Learner

Services.‟ On the English Learner Services margin scroll down to the bottom and click on „NCLB.‟ Click

on the link „Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Report‟. You may also call this office and the information

will be mailed or emailed to you.

Should you wish to exercise the Public School Choice transfer option, and there are available openings,

SAUSD will use the following criteria to determine student eligibility:

If demand for Public School Choice and related transportation costs exceed the funds available,

priority will be given to the lowest achieving students from low-income families.

Pay for transportation costs, only if necessary, for students on a public school choice transfer only

as long as the students‟ home school is identified as a P.I. school.

Accommodate public school choice requests based on space availability at non-P.I. schools.

Consider parent preference before making student assignments.

Students on a Public School Choice transfer will be able to continue enrollment at the non-P.I. until

they complete the highest grade level the school offers but they will not be eligible for Supplemental

Education Services (SES).

If you wish to apply for Public School Choice please complete and return an Intra-District Transfer

request no later than May 17th

, 2013 to your school‟s office. Transfer applications are available at the

school office or at Pupil Support Services, 1629 S. Center St., Santa Ana, CA 92704, (714) 433-3481. You

may also download an Intra-District Transfer application from our website http://www.sausd.us. Requests

will be reviewed and processed based on the criteria above. Upon completion of transfer request, you will

be individually notified of eligibility and available transfer options.

(aprendices del inglés, alumnos con discapacidades y Título I) en http://www.sausd.us. En la barra superior

Si desea ejercer su Opción para escuela pública y hay cupo, el DEU de SA usará los criterios siguientes

para determinar si califican los alumnos:

Si la demanda de Opción para escuela pública y costos de transporte relacionados superan los fondos

disponibles, se dará prioridad a los alumnos de menor desempeño, de familias con bajos ingresos.

Pagar por costos de transporte, solamente si es necesario, para alumnos en Cambio por Opción

para escuela pública, siempre y cuando la escuela del alumno esté en P.I.

Dar lugar a solicitudes de Opción para escuela pública según la disponibilidad de espacio en

escuelas del DEU de SA que no están en P.I.

Considerar la preferencia de los padres antes de asignar a los alumnos.

Los alumnos con Cambio por Opción para escuela pública podrán continuar matriculados en esa

escuela hasta terminar el mayor grado escolar que ofrece esa escuela pero no calificarán para Servicios

Educativos Suplementarios (SES).

Si desea solicitar un cambio por Opción para escuela pública, tenga la bondad de llenar y devolver una

hoja para Cambio de escuela (Intra-district Transfer) a la dirección de su escuela antes del 17 de mayo del

2013. La solicitud está disponible en la escuela o en Pupil Support Services, 1629 S. Center St., Santa Ana,

CA 92704, (714) 433-3481. Si gusta puede bajar del internet una hoja para Cambio de escuela (Intra-
