GRADES, CREDITS, HOMEWORK

Grade Reports Students receive report cards showing their standing in all subjects at the end of each six-week period. Questions should be directed to the student’s teacher and/or the student’s counselor.

Grading System The grades of A, B, C and D are used to indicate passing grades. The grades of F, Incomplete, and No Mark in any subject indicate no credit was earned.

A -- Indicates outstanding achievement and represents superior understanding of the course content. It should not be expected unless work of an exceptional quality has been demonstrated throughout the course. (4 grade points) B -- Represents a significantly better than average understanding of the course content. Both A and B grades merit college recommendation. (3 grade points) C -- Represents an average understanding of the basic essentials of the course. It is not strong enough, however, to merit college recommendation. (2 grade points) D -- Represents below average understanding of the course although the work is passing. (1 grade point)

Page 4: 2014-2015 · Page 2 Saddleback High School 2802 South Flower Street, Santa Ana, CA 92707 Main Office (714) 569-6300 Attendance (714) 569-6301 Higher Education Center/Registrar (714)

Page 4

F -- Indicates that no credit is received. It represents failure to demonstrate an understanding of the course. A failing grade is given if the student discontinues a course after four weeks. If this grade is received in a required course, the course must be repeated. (0 grade points) I -- Indicates incomplete work. It is given only to students who have been doing satisfactory work, but were unable to complete their work because of serious illness, etc. Work must be completed within the first six weeks of the following semester to earn credit. In the case of graduating seniors, an incomplete grade must be made up by the end of the fifth week of the student’s final semester. (0 grade points) NM -- Indicates student was not enrolled in the course long enough to be exposed to the basic foundation of the course (less than 21 days). If this mark is received in a required course, the course must be repeated. (0 grade points)

Credit Academic subjects, when taken five days a week, earn five semester credits. A course load of six subjects earns 30 credits for the semester. No credit is earned for subjects that are repeated or not passed. Students must earn at least 220 credits to graduate (as well as pass required courses and proficiency tests). Students must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in order to receive a high school diploma.

Homework Completing homework is a key component to student success. The following homework guidelines define the expectations we hold for our students. As educators we believe:

Homework is an important aspect of a student’s education. Homework provides independent practice and application of what students are learning. Homework also provides the opportunity to develop self-discipline and time management skills to prepare for the work place.

Homework will be meaningful and productive when students, teachers and parents understand its purpose.

Parents can be helpful by providing encouragement and a quiet place to study.

It is important to evaluate homework for the feedback it provides regarding student progress.

Homework given in high school is different from that given at the middle school in complexity, maturity, depth, detail, and length. Homework assignments may include: continuation of work begun in class, individual practice, reading, writing, evaluation of media, gathering of data, projects, or completion of lab activities. Grades 9 and 10 will require 30-45 minutes per day in core subjects. Grades 11 and 12 will require 45-60 minutes per day in core subjects.

Responsibility for Make-Up Work School work missed because of absence should be made up within a period of time equal to the absence; except in the case of a very serious illness when the time may be extended. The responsibility for making up school work rests with the student. Students should make every effort to attend all classes each day. Excessive unexcused absences may result in a grade reduction.

Athletic and Extra-Curricular Eligibility Representing the school in extra-curricular activities is considered a privilege. Extracurricular programs and activities are expected to supplement and strengthen the curriculum provided in school. Eligibility for participation of students in extracurricular activities shall be determined on the basis of scholastic achievement. In order to represent the school in any public contest, performance, or capacity of any kind, to belong to any school organization, or to be in any way connected to the management of school affairs, students shall have earned an overall minimum of C-average grades in courses taken during the previous grading period. C-average is defined as a 2.0 grade point average, based on a 4-point scale. In addition, such students must maintain satisfactory citizenship for the previous and present semesters. If a student is absent from school, that student may not be eligible to perform in any school-sponsored activity that afternoon or evening unless cleared by the Assistant Principal of Student Relations.

Conduct at Athletic Games and School Sponsored Activities: All students are reminded that school-sponsored activities; at school or off campus, are under jurisdiction of school regulations. Smoking and drinking are strictly prohibited. Violation of the law or school regulations at any school function will result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.

Lockers Do not store any valuables in your PE locker. The school accepts NO responsibility for anything stored in your PE locker. PE lockers are subject to search and inspection.

Dances The time, date and location of dances will be announced by the Activities Office. Any pre-dance dinner parties or after-dance parties are not part of the school approved and sponsored program. Dress for some dances may be specialized. In most cases, a student may bring a guest to a dance provided that they obtain a guest permit prior to the dance. Guests must be under the age of 21. All students must have a valid I.D. card in their possession in order to be admitted to the dance. School dress code is enforced at all dances. Students facing disciplinary action may be prohibited from attending school events by administration. The Activities Office does not refund or transfer any purchases made. All students attending dances must be picked-up within a half hour after the dance or they may lose their privileges for the next dance.

Fifth, Eighth, Tenth Tardy Referral to Student Relations Office

Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend school regularly. Each class period is factored as an independent absence for purposes of state audits. Students who are absent more than five (5) days during any given school year, are less likely to earn excellent academic grades in their classes. Saddleback High School reports all absences to the District, County, and State agencies for purposes of SART and SARB. In the event of an absence, 1. Students go to the attendance window, prior to 7:55 am, with a note

from their parent or guardian. 2. Students receive a Re-Admit Slip stamped and signed by the attendance

office. The attendance office will keep the note and determine if the absence is Excused, Unexcused, or Unverified. Students will receive an Unverified mark if they do not bring a note. If it is determined that the parent or guardian and school officials did not know the student’s whereabouts during an absence, a mark of Truancy will appear on their attendance record.

3. Students show the Re-Admit Slip to all their teachers; then keep it as a record of the excused or unexcused absence.

Central Detention Students assigned to Central Detention will attend 1 hour from 3:05 PM to 4:05 PM on school days. Students are required to bring academic work.

Saturday School Students assigned to Saturday School will attend 4 hours from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Activities will include: life skills curriculum and academic assistance. Nutrition will be provided. Failure to attend Saturday School will result in disciplinary consequences.
