It’s Grandparents Day!

I have many fond memories of growing up and spending time with my grandparents. It was a Sunday tradition to visit my

grandparents after Sunday lunch. It was a time to hang out with them and my uncles, aunts, and cousins. Family bonds were fostered in us at an early age.

Not only were family bonds fostered, but respect for those older than us was firmly instructed. We were taught to not just respect our elders, but to listen to their wisdom, to pay attention to their life experience, but more importantly to assist them whenever they needed help. When I started driving my parents would quickly send me to help my grandmother (probably to get me out of the house, too!) or if they were in the hospital to sit with them. I learned to value that time and now I miss that time more and more.

In the tradition of the Church, we honor all grandparents on the feast of Sts. Joachim and Ann, the parents of the blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus’ grandparents. We are told in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2219:

Filial respect promotes harmony in all of family life; it also concerns relationships between brothers and sisters. Respect toward parents fills the home with light and warmth. "Grandchildren are the crown of the aged." 26 Prov 17:6 "With all humility and meekness, with patience, [support] one another in charity. 27 (Eph 4:2)

These are words I would hope all people take to heart. Filial respect is the foundation of family life, it effects all generations, because it rests upon the virtue of love.

It is so heart breaking to hear the number of people who have no contact with children and grandchildren all because of political ideologies. The cancel culture we live in says to cut off anyone who thinks differently than you. That’s why I love religious life so much. Within the Redemptorists you find men who are all over the place politically, yet daily we gather for prayer and Mass, we gather to share a meal together, we gather to share our lives even if our views are different. Is it easy? No, in fact it can be quite difficult. However, as Redemptorists, we each challenge ourselves to respect and honor each other and find joy in one another, and we do.

May each of us, as followers of Christ, have filial respect and love for each other, and find joy in each person we meet! Especially those older, wiser, and more experienced than us! Happy Grandparents Day!

In the Redeemer, Fr. Lamar , C.Ss.R.

MEET YOUR PASTORAL COUNCIL After I retired in 2004, my husband and I moved to SaddleBrooke. We started attending Mass at Santa Catalina Church in the same year. He passed away in 2008.

After my husband passed away, I started to get

involved in Parish activities. I assisted Lupita in the Youth Ministry for years and I also became a Eucharistic Minister. My current husband and I were married by Father Larry Sanders here in our church.

While Father Denis was pastor, he appointed me to the Pastoral Council. Currently, the council works with Father Lamar on issues and ideas to strengthen our parish.

Everyone’s input is welcome. Please share your ideas and concerns so we can grow and develop our Parish as a faith-based in Christ community.

Lamar , C.Ss.R.

Our parish quilting group, the Catalina Community Quilters haven’t let the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to their sewing machines! These ladies have kept themselves busy by piecing together the cutest quilts ever. Each quilt is made with love and prayer to comfort and warm the heart of each recipient of their quilted blanket.

We invite you to join us and Fr. Lamar for this special blessing of quilts. May the children who receive these quilts be comforted with God’s love and be given hope knowing that there are people who care for them.

Page 9 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As you probably know, there have been some changes to our Religious Education program. With changes comes new logos to represent those changes. We are very blessed to have a very talented parishioner who is also a graphic designer. Her name is Barbara Truman. She helped me with these changes.

I met Barbara many years ago when her son was enrolled in Youth Ministry. After he graduated from high school, I called her to see if she was interested in volunteering for our Youth Ministry program. She now begins her third year as a CORE member. In the past she has designed t-shirts for our YM retreats. Naturally, I felt she would be the perfect person to ask if she would be interested in designing logos for our new programs. This is what she came up with:

FYI - Faithful Youth Involved - was created specifically with pre-teens in mind. This is the time when they begin to develop a true sense of self. They are discovering their individual personality and

exploring different ways of expressing themselves and their faith. In this engaging class they will not only learn about their faith, but they will also gain leadership skills to help encourage them as faithful stewardships of Christ. We invite all students, grades 5 and 6, to join FYI. This group meets on Wednesdays, 4:30–5:30 pm, beginning October 6.

JR. HOPE is designed for students in grades 7 and 8. This “tween” Youth Group is for students to learn about their faith by participating in activities that are scriptural, social, and service oriented to help them grow in their faith journey.

Barb’s idea for this design comes from Rhode Island’s state seal which features an anchor with the word “HOPE.” I then saw other symbols which included an anchor and the word “faith.” Our collaboration concluded with the following additions: the anchor rope became a rosary. The nails, represent the crucified Christ, and the heart is for His love for us! We invite all 7th and 8th graders to join Jr. Hope. This group meets on Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 pm, beginning October 6.

Last year our teens were asked to suggested names for our new Youth Ministry program. The teens voted, and Ruben Cajigas’s suggestion won.

Our Youth Ministry group is now called “Catalina Crusaders.” I asked Ruben how he came up with the name and he said, “I was thinking about the word “crusade.” We go through spiritual battles and crusades against evil, especially growing up during these times. We have to remember to stay on the good side with God leading us.” Barbara came up with this logo by combining artwork from one of our teens, Lydia Tapia, and a little Game of Thrones. She then drew in our Santa Catalina Church to connect it all together. This group meets on Sundays immediately after the 5 pm Mass, until 7:30 pm, beginning October 3. We invite all high school students to join Catalina Crusaders.

The largest group of students that attend Religious Education classes are grades K-6. I wanted to offer something special for parents/guardians during this time because these RE classes are only an hour long.

My thought was to save them time on the road from dropping off and

picking up their children. Thus came the idea for “Parent Hour.” Parent Hour will save time and give parents/guardians some time to themselves. This hour, in the church, will consist of topics to include Catholic teachings, prayer, guest speakers, and parent resources. This class will be led by Fr. Lamar, Brother Brian (while he is with us) and myself. We invite all parents/guardians to join us on Wednesdays, 4:30–5:30 pm. We will begin on September 29 with a Mandatory Parent and Child Meeting.

Deadline to register for Religious Education is Wednesday, September 8. This deadline assures that our resources arrive before we begin classes the first week in October. Register online at

https://bit.ly/SanCatREonlineREG or pick up a registration form at the office during business hours, M—Th 8:30am—2:30pm. You will also find registration forms in the Narthex of the church when you attend Mass.

IT’S NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH SEPTEMBER 15 -- OCTOBER 15 In 1968, President Johnson signed into law the first proclamation recognizing National Hispanic Heritage week. It was President GHW Bush (who had been a sponsor of that bill while serving in the House) who expanded the proclamation from September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Bush commented, “Hispanic Americans have enriched our nation beyond measure with the quiet strength of their closely knit families and proud communities.”

The Hispanic Heritage Month always begins on September 15. It is the day of the Anniversary of Independence of 5 Latin American countries: Costa Rica, Hondorus, Nicaragua, Guatamala, El Salvadore, with Mexico's Independence on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.1

Hispanic refers to a person who is from or is a descendent from a Spanish speaking country. Latino or Latinx refers to a person who is from or is a descendent from a country in Latin America. Hispanic refers to one’s place of origin, not race. The U.S. Hispanic population reached 60.6 million in 2019, up from 50.7 million in 2010, about 18% of the total U.S. population.

Americans of Mexican origin account for over 60% of the nation's overall Hispanic population. More than half of native Hispanics live in just three states: California, Texas, and Florida.

Articles from our Hispanic and/or Latino parishioners will be in the bulletin throughout Hispanic Heritage month.

I thank You, Lord, for the comfort of Your presence: even in times of loneliness, You are my hope and my confidence, You have been my rock and my fortress since my youth! I thank You for having given me a family and for having blessed me with a long life. I thank You for moments of joy and difficulty, for the dreams that have already come true in my life and for those that are still ahead of me. I thank You for this time of renewed fruitfulness to which You call me. Increase, O Lord, my faith, make me a channel of your peace, teach me to embrace those who suffer more than me, to never stop dreaming and to tell of your wonders to new generations. Protect and guide our clergy and the Church, that the light of the Gospel might reach the ends of the earth. Send Your Spirit, O Lord, to renew the world, that the storm of the pandemic might be calmed, the poor consoled and wars ended. Sustain me in weakness and help me to live life to the full in each moment that You give me, in the certainty that you are with me every day, even until the end of the age. Amen.
