KanbanOverview:

KANBAN is a planning process where production itself will take care of planning.In simple terms KANBAN is a card which has the details about the DEMAND source, uppl!source, "uantit!, #ecie$ing location Etc.

Ii is controlled through %ontrol c!cle where !ou will maintain the t!pe of KANBAN, #eplenishmentstrateg!&E'ample( IN)*+E, E-ernal sto etc

the replenishment is controlled $ia KANBAN tatus. if EM/-0 then it willl trigger replenishmentand once recie$ed it will be set to 1+22. when in use it will be in IN+E status.

There are four types of KANBAN In SAP

1. Classic KANBAN :

In the classic KANBAN production control method, the demand source, the suppl! source and theprocedure to be used to replenish the material are defined in the control c!cle as well as thenumber of kanbans that circulate between the suppl! source and the demand source and the3uantit! per kanban.

In this classic KANBAN procedure, the kanban signal alwa!s onl! triggers replenishment for thekanban 3uantit! defined in the control c!cle. Moreo$er, !ou cannot circulate more kanbans thanare defined in the control c!cle without changing the control c!cle first.

2. KANBAN with Quantity Signal:

In the classic KANBAN procedure, after the kanban has been completel! emptied, the emplo!eein production uses the kanban signal to set the status of the kanban to EM/-0. At no point beforethe kanban is set to EM/-0 is the s!stem informed of the 3uantit! still in the kanban.

+sing the 3uantit! signal, the emplo!ee in production does not trigger the kanban signal forreplenishment manuall! b! setting the kanban status to EM/-0. Instead, the emplo!ee inproduction or a /D% !stem enters the indi$idual withdrawal 3uantities in the s!stem directl!. -hes!stem subtracts each of these withdrawal 3uantities from the actual kanban 3uantit! and whenthe kanban 3uantit! is 4ero, the s!stem automaticall! sets the status of the kanban to EM/-0.

In KANBAN with 3uantit! signal, !ou can also use all the functions a$ailable in the KANBANmodule.

In KANBAN with 3uantit! signal, a separate function is a$ailable for entering the withdrawal3uantit!.

-he actual kanban 3uantit! is reduced b! the withdrawal 3uantit! entered at each posting. -hes!stem recogni4es when the actual kanban 3uantit! is 4ero and automaticall! sets the kanban toEM/-0. -he procedure in detail is as follows5

-he first time a 3uantit! is withdrawn from a kanban, the s!stem sets the status to IN +E. *ncethe kanban is completel! empt!, the status is set to EM/-0 and replenishment is triggered. If thewithdrawal 3uantit! e'ceeds the remaining 3uantit! of this kanban, the s!stem reduces the actual3uantit! of the ne't kanban, which is then set to IN +E.

-he se3uence of the kanbans from which !ou can withdraw material is determined as follows5

1irst, the s!stem empties kanbans with the status IN +E.

-hen the s!stem selects the kanban that has been set to the status 1+22 the longest.

-herefore, in this procedure &as opposed to KANBAN without a 3uantit! signal, the actualkanban 3uantit! is of functional importance.

-he s!stem sets the kanban to 1+22 as normal with the kanban signal.

*nl! the actual 3uantit! of the kanban is updated when !ou use the 3uantit! signal 6 no stockpostings are carried out. -he s!stem does not post the in$entor! data until the status has beenchanged to EM/-0.

1or technical reasons, it is not possible to create se$eral production orders for se$eral kanbansall at once. -he s!stem does not allow such an entr!.

%hange !our entr! or the business process so that onl! one kanban is created. 1or e'ample,make se$eral entries, each with smaller 3uantit!.

If this is not possible, change !our replenishment strateg! from production orders to plannedorders7run schedule 3uantities.

3. One-Card KANBAN:

-he purpose of this process, amongst other things, is to create a one6card KANBAN s!stem withtwo kanbans in a control c!cle. As a kanban is set to the status 8AI- for certain periods in acontrol c!cle, !ou can further reduce the in$entor! le$el at the demand source 6 especiall! duringperiods when the material is not re3uired. In this procedure, replenishment is alwa!s triggeredwhen the kanban that is currentl! being emptied is appro'imatel! half empt!. -he new kanban isthen deli$ered before the current kanban is completel! empt!. -his logic is illustrated in thefollowing graphic5

-o be able to guarantee the replenishment of the kanban currentl! in use, two kanbans are acti$e

some of the time in the one6card s!stem. -herefore, this logic re3uires the use of two kanbans inthe s!stem.

In the one6card KANBAN procedure, !ou can also use all the functions a$ailable in the KANBANmodule.

Before !ou can use this procedure, !ou must select one of the processes in the field, Triggerreplenishmentwhen maintaining the control c!cle.

After the first container is reported full, the s!stem proceeds as follows5 -he secondkanban is set to the status 8AI-. If a new kanban is re3uested, the s!stem sets the fullkanban to the status IN +E. 8ith this status change the kanban with status 8AI- isautomaticall! changed to status EM/-0 and thus replenishment is triggered. 8hen thisnew kanban is deli$ered, it recei$es the status 1+22. As soon as the kanban from whichmaterial is still being withdrawn is set to EM/-0, the s!stem automaticall! sets it to status8AI- and the process is repeated.

As opposed to the logic with the status IN +E, !ou do notha$e to work with an additional status here. *n the other hand, !ou ha$e no possibilit! inthe s!stem of seeing whether a container is currentl! being emptied.

#eaching or e'ceeding the trigger 3uantit!5

-he procedure here is similar to the two procedures described abo$e. )owe$er, thedifference here is that the kanban is set to EM/-0 when the remaining 3uantit! in thekanban reaches or e'ceeds the trigger 3uantit!. In this process, the parts are withdrawnwith the 3uantit! signal. In this case, !ou must maintain the trigger 3uantit! as well as thelogic in the control c!cle. -his process is particularl! useful for parts that are not used ona regular basis. -herefore, !ou can procure parts with KANBAN without ha$ing to keepse$eral containers in stock. )owe$er, a /D% s!stem is re3uired for this procedure.

4. !ent-"ri!en KANBAN:

In e$ent6dri$en KANBAN, material pro$ision is not based on a predefined number of kanbans ora predefined kanban 3uantit!. Instead, it is based on actual material consumption. -he material isnot continuall! pro$ided and replenished at a suppl! area. It is onl! replenished when specificall!re3uested. In this procedure, the ad$antages of the KANBAN module are used to make thematerial replenishment process e$en more simple.

In the e$ent6dri$en KANBAN procedure, !ou can also use all the functions a$ailable in theKANBAN module.

0ou must maintain separate control c!cles for e$ent6dri$en KANBAN.

In this procedure, a kanban is onl! created when re3uired. -hat is, kanban creation is triggered

b! a certain e$ent. -he s!stem creates a kanban for e$er! re3uested material 3uantit!, which issubse3uentl! deleted on replenishment.

-he e$ent6dri$en kanban is created using a separate function. -he 3uantit! to be replenished isdefined directl! in this function. In the control c!cle, !ou can define the following restrictions forthe definition of the kanban5

0ou can enter a rounding 3uantit! to round up the re3uired 3uantit!.

0ou can enter a fi'ed kanban 3uantit!. If the re3uested 3uantit! is smaller than the fi'ed

kanban 3uantit!, the s!stem replenishes the fi'ed 3uantit!. If the re3uired 3uantit! isgreater than the fi'ed 3uantit!, se$eral kanbans &for the fi'ed 3uantit! are replenisheduntil the re3uired 3uantit! is co$ered. )ere, if necessar!, the re3uired 3uantit! is roundedup to a complete multiple of the fi'ed 3uantit!.

s!stem if no 3uantit! has been specified in the function for creating the e$ent6dri$enkanban.
