General Surgery General Surgery is a specialized field of surgery which includes a wide range of procedures involving the neck, chest, abdomen and extremities.

Some of the most common procedures involve:

Advanced Laparoscopy Advanced Laparoscopy involves placing a small tube with a light source into the abdomen or chest cavity to examine the internal organs. These procedures are often used to determine the diagnosis or extent of a disease, and for the performance of the actual surgery.

Some common procedures include:

OuR SERvIcESSurgical Associates dates its heritage to 1909 when the two former Chairmen of Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. George Ben Johnston and Dr. A. Murat Willis, founded the original Johnston-Willis Hospital at the corner of Sixth and Franklin Streets. Fifteen years later in 1924, that hospital moved to 2900 Kensington Avenue where it continued to serve Richmond for over 55 years.

Dr. Frank S. Johns, who succeeded Dr. Willis as Chief of Surgery, was later joined in surgical practice by Dr. Donald S. Daniel and Dr. William Allen Johns. The successor surgical partnership in the 1960’s included Dr. Frank Johns’ son, Dr. Thomas N.P. Johns, Dr. James A. Selph, Dr. B. Noland Carter, Dr. E. Armistead Talman, Dr. Jaquelin M. Harrison and Dr. Henry P. Royster. In 1970 this group of surgeons incorporated under the name of Surgical Associates of Richmond, Inc. Dr. Campbell G. Stalker joined Surgical Associates of Richmond in 1975. Since the mid 1980’s the practice has expanded to include 17 surgeons and two physician assistants who specialize in general, vascular, colon and rectal, breast, and surgical oncology. This continued growth contributes up-to-date training to compliment Surgical Associates’ well- established tradition of experience.

When Chippenham Medical Center opened in 1972, as the first general hospital south of the James River, Surgical Associates opened its first southside office. In 1980, when Johnston-Willis hospital relocated from Kensington Avenue to its present Chesterfield County facility, Surgical Associates opened a second office on the hospital campus. In 2003, Surgical Associates opened VeinSolutions, a premier vein care center located at 8700 Stony Point Parkway, Suite 140 near Stony Point Fashion Park.

In 2005, a 40,000 square foot medical office building was built on the campus of Johnston-Willis hospital. This building currently houses the offices of Surgical Associates as well as the John Tyler Community College Nursing Program. In 2010, Surgical Associates continued its commitment to the southside community of Richmond with the construction of a new 10,000 square foot office in the Waterford Medical Center, near the campus of St. Francis Medical Center. The Waterford Medical Center office is located at 13460 Tredegar Lake Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23112. And in 2012, Surgical Associates partnered with Radiology Associates of Richmond to open Richmond Vascular Center, southside Richmond’s only comprehensive center for dialysis maintenance and vein care.

Vascular SurgeryVascular surgery involves surgery on blood vessels throughout the body, except those within the heart and brain. Peripheral Vascular TestingFor patient convenience, Surgical Associates offers peripheral vascular testing at our offices at Johnston-Willis, Waterford, VeinSolutions of Richmond, and Richmond Vascular Center. Utilizing state-of-the art ultrasound equipment and painless, non-invasive procedures, these advanced diagnostic laboratories can identify blockages in veins or arteries in the neck, legs or other regions of the body. The physicians of Surgical Associates also direct the Peripheral Vascular Laboratories at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Chippenham Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center.

Surgical OncologySurgical oncology involves general surgical procedures of many treatable cancers, and the management of all aspects of cancer therapy. This includes surgical intervention, coordination with the medical and radiation oncologist and involvement in national protocols for new treatment of cancer. Although general surgery training includes intensive training in cancers that are surgically treated, there are unusual cancers that require further training. Surgical Associates of Richmond provides this type of care and is active in support groups for patients with some types of cancer.
