Page 2: SARAMENTS Website.pdf · 08/07/2020  · monuments important to Christians represents a blatant form of bigotry. Here is another instance of anti-Christian behavior. The great basilica

If you watch the news, which can be pretty depressing these days, you know that statues and monuments are being defaced all over the county. Perhaps many of these monuments reflect an earlier period of regional pride and should be taken down. I really don’t want to take a position on these matters, except to say that more and more, the statues that are being decapitated or vandalized are of Christian saints, namely the Virgin Mary. To me, the ruining of such monuments important to Christians represents a blatant form of bigotry. Here is another instance of anti-Christian behavior. The great basilica Hagia Sophia in what is modern day Istanbul, Turkey, was built by the Emperor Justinian I in the year 537. For centuries, it was the largest Christian church in the world until St. Peter Basilica in Rome was built. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the basilica was converted into a mosque by the Muslims. To create peace between Christians and Muslims, the secular leader Ataturk converted the mosque into a museum in 1935. On July 24th, 2020, the Islamist Turkish President Recep Erdogan reinstituted the building as a mosque, and Muslim prayers are now being said in this historical place which was once open to everyone. Hagia Sophia is the most important church in Eastern Orthodoxy. There has been an international outcry from Eastern Orthodox churches, the Vatican and the United Nations to return Hagia Sophia to the status of a museum in the name of peace. Catalyst is the Journal of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. It documents instances of anti-Catholic behavior in our country and speaks out against them. It wasn’t being printed during the “stay at home order” in New York State. The magazine is up and running again, and we have a number of copies on the table in the vestibule area. I encourage you to read it. Let us keep in our prayers all those in nursing homes. For many of these residents, they have been sequestered since the COVID outbreak began. It is so difficult not to have personal contact with family and friends. Our prayers and thoughts go out to those in nursing homes. As I mentioned this past week, our parish has surpassed our Diocesan Services Appeal Goal. Our parishioners have pledged or donated $52,904, which is 113% of our goal. I want to thank everyone who contributed for your great generosity. Every gift, no matter its size, really does count. This year in particular, the Diocese has greatly assisted parishes with a variety of COVID matters. I don’t know what we would do without their help. Contributions to the parish are somewhat down. I realize that this is normal during the summer months, but I also think it is related to the COVID outbreak. Just a reminder that contributions may be placed in the collection baskets on the baptismal fonts. They may also be brought in or mailed to the parish office. Like me, you might prefer to use EGIVE on the parish website to make a secure donation to St. Therese. Again, I want to thank the parish for its great generosity. Enjoy these beautiful summer weeks, Fr. John Fain

Our Social Ministry

August 2, 2020

Kristine Witkowski, a parishioner and a member of our Parish Pastoral Council, stopped me last weekend asking about our “Outfit A Child for School” drive. Kristine said, “Even with school education happening

virtually for the first 10 weeks, kids still need all their desk supplies!” So, to take advantage of all the back-to-school sales in our local retail stores, let’s do our “Outfit A Child for School” drive NOW thru August 30!

The 75th Anniversary of Hiroshima & Nagasaki “International relations cannot be held captive to military force, mutual intimidation, and the parading of stockpiles of arms. Weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons, create nothing but a false sense of security. They cannot constitute the basis for peaceful coexistence between members of the human family, which must rather be inspired by an ethics of solidarity (cf. Message to the United Nations Conference to Negotiate a Legally Binding Instrument to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, 27 March 2017). Essential in this regard is the witness given by the Hibakusha, the survivors of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, together with other victims of nuclear arms testing. May their prophetic voice serve as a warning, above all, for coming generations! (Address of his Holiness, Pope Francis to Participants in the International Symposium “Prospects for A World Free of Nuclear Weapons and for Integral Disarmament,” 11/10/2017)

NEXT WEEKEND: We will continue our tradition of praying for Peace at the Peace Pole – masked and socially distanced - after each of the Masses.

“Be the Bridge” from Racism to Equality Chapter 2 of Latasha Morrison’s book Be The Bridge is entitled “The Bridge to Lament, History Keeps Account.” Latasha writes, “Historical truths play an important role in our understanding of how we arrived in our current racial tension. [As hard as it will be] Without looking back, without understanding the truth of our history, it’s difficult to move forward in healthy ways.” Latasha ends this chapter with a couple of initial assignments: 1. List three (3) historical facts related to our nation’s racial history that you learned

outside of school. 2. What are some ways we can become more aware of our racial history. “Truth frees us to grow, to see, to be aware. Frees us from the bondage of racial sin. Frees us to have courage for the difficult questions.”

Thank you! to Joe Droste and the Giving Tree Farm for donating Green Beans and Wax Beans to our food pantry. More veggies to come, too! Thank you!

Our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

RCIA Question of the Week: I don’t remember “mystagogy” ever being mentioned as a task of the parish. Is the role of “parish” changing? RCIA Answer of the Week: “As a living community of believers, the Parish finds itself in a context whereby the territorial affiliation is increasingly less evident, where places of association are multiplied and where interpersonal relationships risk being dissolved into a virtual world without any commitment or responsibility towards one’s neighbor. It is noteworthy how such cultural changes and the evolving territorial ties are fostering within the Church, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, a new discernment around community, ‘which consists in seeing reality with the eyes of God, with a view to unity and communion.’ The whole People of God must urgently embrace the Holy Spirit’s invitation to begin the process of “renewing” the face of the Church.” (para 9, 10) Believe it? Believe it! Next week: More from “The Pastoral Conversion of the Parish Community in the Service of the Evangelizing Mission of the Church.”

Our Adult Faith Formation

Small Groups Doing the Year of Scripture! Remember Deacon Ralph Poyo from about 5 years ago? Ralph publishes a monthly blog, this month (July) entitled “Becoming Responsible for Souls.” Ralph writes, “Parishes that will become effective for the Kingdom of God in the future will be those whose laity reorient their lives to become. They will, of course, be following the strong model of their clergy who live this out. It will be through this sacrifice of t ime, energy and focus that the local parish will create an atmosphere of love that becomes authentically evangelistic in nature. One of the best vehicles we have t oday for developing a disciple [responsible for the souls of others] is through small groups. However, a very small percentage of parish memberships participate in small groups. This needs to change! A massive shift needs to occur and I believe will occur in the days to come. The Church (all parishes) is going to be shaken to the core, and only those who are truly holding on to Christ will be left standing. We need to see adults of every age engaged in small groups, where they take off their mask, bring down their walls and share their journey of following Jesus. They need to be in relationship with other Catholics and take responsibility for helping them get to Jesus.”
