2009 Lake Run Club Circuit RacesNot all race dates are confirmed. All races are subject to change.

• Points are awarded on an age group ba-sis. A first place finish in the age group will award that runner the maximum number of points for that race. (i.e. 1st place in age at a 5K will earn 35 points, 2nd = 34, etc.) Points possible for each race are listed in the far right column in the table on the left. For races with two distances, the higher of the points is for the longer distance.

• Members who participate in 7 circuit races AND earn 50 volunteer points will win an award. The top 10 race scores will count for the final circuit point total.

• Age group is determined by the age of the participant at the FIRST RACE on the CIRCUIT (Miller Park Zoo 5K).

• Age groups for the circuit are as follows (for both male and female):

14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over.

Important Note!!Did you qualify for the coveted High Five! award by running or volunteering at each of the five club-sponsored circuit races (St Pat, Lake Run, Park 2 Park, Dog Days, & Dawson)? Avoid problems later by checking now to confirm your circuit and volunteer points for those races!

Steve Barr contends that he’s not really running from the law, but more likely to-ward food! Steve doesn’t count running

home for lunch every day while in school in his running career, but admits that he’s been in the running mode for about seven years. Why, you ask? “So I can eat whatever I darn well please, whenever I darn well please!” Can’t think of a better reason than that! Let’s find out more…

J & G Team: Mr Barr – who inspired you as a runner?

Steve: Everyone who runs. But special thanks to Donna Creditor, Stan Shobe, Bonnie McAlwee, Tony Perazinni (all Second Wind members), and the Catch The Wave program.

J & G: Sounds like you have some great connections with the Second Wind Runners! What made you join the Lake Run Club?

Steve: I still wonder why, but anyone who says the discount for races isn't a reason is a fibber. Definitely not to compete, as I learned early on. Now I’m hoping for orga-nized “trips” to runs – perhaps one or two via charter for long weekends? There are some great multi-run events in the Midwest which feature maybe a 50K, a 50 miler, a marathon and perhaps a relay marathon and even a half or 5K distance.

J & G: Tell us about your first race, please…

Steve: Run for the Bagels, Mattoon. I will NEVER run for a bagel again. I would however run for cheeseburgers, doughnuts, deep dish pizza, fried chicken, mashed po-tatoes, stew, pancakes, brownies, waffles, chocolate, Black Cows, cookies, Meg Anderson’s coffee cake, etc, etc.

J & G: We can see you’re certainly a goal setter, Steve. Besides the possibility of finding food at the finish line, what makes your favorite race your favorite?

Steve: Any race run on a trail.

J & G: The “J” part of the Team agrees 100%! Is there any other race that really sticks in your mind?

Steve: My first ultra – the Afton Ultra; I PR’d and DFL’d – price-less!!! The Mountain Goat – because of the course and because I worked a couple summers at Kickapoo in days gone by. My first

half marathon – the Nashville Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. My first marathon – the Top of Utah Marathon.

J & G: Wow, that’s an impressive group of races. Where do you like to train?

Steve: The half mile past the grain bins at Kerrick, because it's an unpaved trail. Also, Farmdale Park (East Peoria), Clinton Lake, McNaughton Park (Pekin) and Evergreen Lake. All trails.

J & G: Never a dull moment, running those venues! If you could run any race in the world, which would you pick?

Steve: Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. BECAUSE it's the Grand Canyon!

J & G: How about a “You’ll never believe what happened on my run today” story?

Steve: I did get hit by a thrown rock yester-day at The Hobo at Rockcut...

J & G: Steve, if Chilly Chili isn’t the most unusual race you’ve ever taken part in, what is?

Steve: Ron Schweinberg’s unofficial "Run This Way" 5K. Not named after the song "Walk This Way," but from the movie Young Frankenstein. Remember Marty Feldman’s line, “Walk THIS way"?

J & G: Indeed we do! Speaking of famous people, do you know who Rich Beal is and have you ever had a sighting?

Steve: Yes, yes, and I'm still in therapy.

J & G: Which race do you think is the most fun to volunteer at?

Steve: Da Deer Run Run. Because it’s Illinois weather in the middle of December,

mostly standing still. How can you ask?

J & G: Dare we ask what you are training for right now?

Steve: I’m training for the Farmdale 33 miler, Allerton Park, Canal Connection, and pacing Donna Creditor at night for the Route 66 Mother Road Ultra November 8 in Oklahoma. They will have many diners along that course and I weep with joy just thinking about it. (Note to readers: profiles are often created a few months in advance of publication. However, Steve did ac-complish all of those race goals, including eating at diners while

Donna ran along the Mother Road looking for a 100 miler.)

J & G: Are there any superstitions or rituals you go through before a big race?

Steve: I am known to carbo-load for even 5Ks.

J & G: Who doesn’t? What’s the coolest piece of running gear you own?

Steve: Smart Wool socks, Vasque trail shoes, and my Spring Valley Walleye 5K long sleeve camo shirt.

J & G: It doesn’t get any better than Smart Wool! Who have you

been running with lately?

Steve: Donna Creditor and (Sister Madame President) Jana Kiefer.

J & G: Egad! That does account for some of the odd looks we get from runners from other clubs… What keeps you running?

Steve: Signing up for races. And the food mentioned earlier in this interview.

J & G: But of course! Food is a great motivator, and so are you, Steve. There’s never a dull moment with you on the trails! Keep up the great attitude and your never-say-die running philosophy.

Spring Thingsby Sherry Setloff

Here it is, the dead of winter while you’re reading this news-letter. I thought this title might cheer you up: “Spring Things”. No, not the boing-boing kind of spring. I’m talking about the season that is our reward for surviving the long, cold winter (which seems like the longest of the four seasons); the season that is way too short (sometimes fast-forwarding directly into

summer); the season that has no other nickname like autumn (aka “fall”) does.

Being the disgusting optimist that I am, I noticed the first signs of spring in December – and no, it wasn’t due to excessive consump-tion of eggnog!

After December 21 – the first official day of winter (al-• though I think of December 1 as the first unofficial day of winter) and the shortest day of the year – the days are now getting longer. When I leave work at 5pm, I get to watch the sun set over the parking lot. By the time you read this, it might still be daylight when I walk to my car after work.Among the gazillion catalogues I received (and recycled) • in December, I actually received a spring preview cata-logue filled with summery clothes – aka “resort wear”.

Maybe if we start calling winter “pre-spring”, it won’t seem so long. By the time the following pre-spring events are over, it re-ally will be spring:

Sunday, February 1: Super Bowl 43 (that’s XLIII in Latin) • takes place in Tampa, FL. Order yourself some resort wear or a football jersey before you go.Saturday, February 7: registration for the Catch The Wave • (CTW) program for beginning or returning runners takes place at Often Running. If you’re a fair-weather runner

who hibernates during pre-spring, CTW is a good way to get back into running.February 20 is the date when Major League Baseball’s • spring training officially begins, although pitchers report to spring training five days earlier on February 15. (I’ve learned a few things during 31 years of marriage to a sports fanatic.)Wednesday, February 25 is the first night of Catch • The Wave. This year, CTW will be meeting at Capen Auditorium in Edwards Hall on the ISU quad.Pre-spring is a good time to examine your footwear. If • you can’t remember when you bought your current pair of running shoes, you’re probably overdue to replace them. This would be a good time to use one of those gift cards that Santa brought you.And speaking of gift cards, if you were lucky enough to • get one for spa or salon services, go get that manicure, pedicure, massage or facial. You’ll feel like a million bucks. Don’t wait for a special occasion or you’ll never get around to using it.Now is the time to fill in those squares on your 2009 • calendar with the races you plan to run. Go to the Lake Run Club web site (www.lakerunclub.org) and click on ‘Area Races’ in the left-hand column to see the 2009 race calendar.Guys, you’ll • LOVE this event: the annual Style Show and High Fashion Luncheon – a fundraiser for the Children’s Discovery Museum – takes place at the Parke Hotel and Conference Center on Friday, February 27 at 11:30am. Come see the latest in resort (and non-resort) wear! The social event of the season takes place on Saturday, • February 28. That’s right; I’m talking about the annual Lake Run Club banquet at Tri-Lakes! This is the per-fect cure for cabin fever: fun, food, friends, beer, music, awards, door prizes and raffles – it’s all good.My husband’s favorite time of year is “March Madness”, • because he’s a huge college hoops fan. And by the time March Madness is over, the Major League Baseball sea-son will be here!

There! By the time you read next month’s newsletter, spring re-ally will almost be here! Until then, whether it be indoors or out, keep on moving.

Happy 2009, everyone. I hope everyone’s running wishes come true this year!

Here are some items of interest for 2009:

Kennekuk Road Runners fa-mous Mountain Goat 10K & 15K races have changed names

and venues. The new races are called Soaring Eagle Runs/Walk and will be held sometime in March. These new races will not likely be on our Circuit this first year. Many of us will miss the Goat with the challenging hills, interesting water stops, and the great post-race party.

The inaugural running of the Illinois Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K will kick off in Champaign on April 11. Rumor has it there is only 60 feet of altitude gain within the course. Now, that’s a flat course!

The Dawson Lake 5K race has moved to Evergreen Lake due to the closing of Moraine View State Park. The race has been re-named Evergreen Lake 5K, and McLean County Parks & Rec will be the race beneficiary.

Tri-Shark Triathlon Classic has also moved to Evergreen Lake. The date of June 6 is still good.

Casual Marathon Training is happening at Lake Bloomington each Saturday and Sunday. If you’re training for a spring mara-thon and looking for some long-run company, join us at the lake. More information about times and distances can be found on the Marathon Training Forum on the LRC Website.

Winter has gotten us off to an icy start – here’s hoping things settle down for the next few months so we can get out there and enjoy some winter running.

Take care, everyone. Run safely.

The board discussed accountability issues to ensure members actually per-form volunteer activities. Jill will be in close contact with the fin-ish line and registration coordinators to double check that those who signed up actually did volunteer. If you’re a State Farmer who contributed 40 hours or more of vol-unteer work for the Lake Run Club in 2008, read on:

Through the Good Neighbor Grant Program, the State Farm Companies Foundation awards a $500 grant on behalf of each eligible State Farm associate (active employee, agent or retiree) who volunteers a minimum of 40 hours in a year to an eligible nonprofit organization – like the Lake Run Club. Think about it: were you a team leader for Catch The Wave or Ride the Wave in 2008? Were you a race director or assistant? Did you take pictures at the races? Work the finish line? Help with the Friday night Kids Fun Runs – or any combination of the aforementioned? Believe me, it all adds up. If you think you volunteered 40 hours or more for the Lake Run Club in 2008, here’s what you can do to help our club financially – and it won’t cost you a cent:

Go to https://www.easymatch.com/statefarm and click on “Good Neighbor Grant Program”. Complete the application section of the Good Neighbor Grant form before March 31 and send the completed form to me, Sherry Detloff. I will collect the complet-ed forms and give them to our president Jana Kiefer, so that she can submit all the forms together to the State Farm Companies Foundation. When filling out the form, note that our organi-zation is still called the “Thursday Night Lake Run Club” (ID: 0008885).

The Good Neighbor Grant Program is one of the easiest ways to help the Lake Run Club. If you’ve already worked at least 40 hours through your 2008 volunteer efforts, please spend a few minutes more completing an application. Let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for your consideration.

Volunteer in the Spotlight - Newsletter Editor(s)

One of our many volunteer opportunities is Newsletter Editor. And, lucky for us, the Lake Run Club gets two for the price of one with Bob and Vicki King. (I know Bob and Vicki are saying – What Price?)

So, what do Newsletter Editors do?

Beg people (not always) for articles and pictures• Send friendly reminders to contributors about • deadlinesResearch races for the Race Clipboard• Check on ads and race apps• Edit, Edit, Edit (only as needed – smile)• Assemble all pages using Adobe® InDesign® and • Photoshop® Elements®Communicate with the printer• Create an online version•

I know some of you are wondering why two individuals would donate so much time and energy MONTHLY to this position? For the same reason many of you volunteer, and that is to make our community a better place! Vicki says she’s a firm believer in “every little bit helps” – whether it be picking up one piece of litter, donating a few bucks at an ABC run, or encouraging one more person to take one more step on the road to getting or

staying healthy.

When Bob and Vicki are not busy publishing the next newslet-ter, they are often out running at a Lake Run Club race or event – imagine that. Their favorite local race is the Lake Run. They like the party atmosphere and seeing the large number of local runners. A favorite out of town race is the Nashville Country Music Half Marathon. Bob and Vicki have run the event in 2003, 2005 and 2007; and 2009 is under discussion. Their favorite non-race event is the series of ABC runs. (“Just show up and run however many miles you want; eat however much food you want, and donate however much money you can to a worthy cause! No stress!”)

They agree that getting more involved in the club, and getting to know more club members as a result, has been both enjoyable and rewarding. What advice would they offer? “Send in your non-circuit race results!!! We know you’re out there running those off-beat races, in out-of-the-way places! If it’s not on the circuit, YOU need to send it in! It’s fun to see what others are doing. And parents: if your kids are family members, send in their spring track and fall cross-country results. They (and we) would love to see their name in print!”

Bob and Vicki, thanks for your super job with our very own Lake Runner Newsletter.

Both ladies were kind enough to send in these reminders of what running in Illinois win-ters can be like. As we finish this edition of "The Lake Runner", the temperature in Bloomington is -5° and the wind chill is -25°.

The Details:The Lake Run Club Circuit Calendar opens each year with the Miller Park Zoo “Stampede” 5K race. The unique title refers to the sponsor of the race and not the size of the participants who have taken the winter off from running. In addition to the Stampede, there is a 3K “Stroll” for those not quite finished hiber-nating and a quarter mile “Critter Crawl” to round out this family friendly event.

This year’s race takes place on Saturday, March 7 with the kids’ quarter mile Critter Crawl (for ages 10 and under) starting at 9:30 am followed by the 5K run/3K walk at 10am. Check in and race day registration is from 8:00-9:15 at the Miller Park Pavilion. The form can be found online at: http://www.cityblm.org/events.asp?id=8141

This is one of Miller Park Zoo’s major fundraisers and this year the Zoo is offering a $10 discount on 5K and 3K race fees for those who sign up for an individual or fam-ily membership. After the race, a member of the Zoo Society will contact runners who mark this option on the race form in order to com-plete their registration.

The Course:The 13th running of the Zoo Stampede follows the same basic course as years past. The race begins at the zoo and takes a tour through Miller Park before exiting east onto neighboring streets after mile one. The route heads east on Miller Street and then winds south toward Lake Park Road as runners pass the water stop at mile two. Runners then head back into the park toward the finish line near the pavilion. The course is mostly flat on paved roads with a few rolling hills.

The Race Director:Race director duties for this race have been passed down from one Miller Park Zoological Society board member to the next. The current race director and board president Tina Kohn has overseen the race after being elected to the Zoo board three years ago. A Bloomington native, volunteering to direct the race fell in line with her desire to help the Miller Park Zoo and her com-munity. She grew up working for the park district and has felt connected to the park and the zoo for most of her life.

Her goal for the race is to increase participation in both the Critter Crawl and race events so that fund raising for the zoo will in-crease as well. To meet this goal, she has increased race amenities

including goodie bags for both the 5K race and the kids run, long sleeve T-shirts, medals for all Critter Crawl participants, and a water stop (which in March, is considered an amenity and not a necessity). With quantities for some items limited to the first 200 runners, it is wise for runners to register early because attendance often tops that number, especially in good weather.

How it All Began:With the financial responsibilities of the animals and improve-ments to the zoo, the Zoological Society is often in search for fundraisers. Hosting an event such as the 5K Stampede not only helps fund the zoo, it also promotes awareness about the zoo and its surrounding park facilities.

The zoo is approximately eight acres including a small rainfor-est, petting zoo, and other small animal exhibits. It also includes a sea lion, river otter, and endangered and rare species includ-

ing a red wolf, Sumatran tiger, red panda, Amu leopard, and sun bear. Wildlife conservation is a priority of the zoo and they have recently added an ani-mal hospital.

The Experience:Come March, runners fall into two basic categories: those who have run over win-ter and those who haven’t. This race has something for both. For those who have trained all winter and cannot wait for the racing calendar to start, this race is the first chance to feel the results of your efforts. For those who might not have spent as much

time running during the cold months, this race is a wake-up call.

Think about it—the race is held in early March so the weather will likely be brisk. This means bodies not quite in shape can be covered up with jackets and tights. It also means that low temps will squash any desires to achieve a PR. That makes it a perfect checkup for one’s training regimen with plenty of time for tune-up before the summer racing season is in full swing.

Reason to Run:Following the race there are plenty of reasons to stick around and enjoy the park. A short walk from the finish line, the post race party at the park pavilion includes a pasta dinner and hand-paint-ed awards. After the award ceremony, runners are invited to tour the zoo free of charge to see how the proceeds of the event are put into practice. And if that isn’t enough, the first 200 registered 5K and 3K participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and goodie bag.

I guess it’s fate that we always have the Salvation Army’s “Coats for Kids” run on a raw, windy day. It was 37 degrees on Saturday, November 15 with an 18 mph NW wind. Just once I would like to see above normal temperatures and winds measuring in the single digits. We had a chance this year, since we moved the date from its traditional mid-December spot to mid-November, to avoid conflicting with the Deer Run Run, which had changed from their normal weekend.

In spite of the conditions, we had a good turnout of 25 partici-pants. We also received contributions from some who couldn’t attend. The financial contributions totaled $312 and a total of 61 winter clothing items were donated (37 coats, 6 stocking caps, 7 mittens, 5 sweaters, and 5 other winter items).

Of the $312 in financial contributions, $90 was from members of the McLean County Wheelers, who frequently join us. It was a better day to run than to bike, so the Wheelers who showed up chose to run. Speaking of bikers, Scott Richardson joined us for the first time as a runner. Thanks, Scott, for frequently publiciz-ing the ABC runs in the Pantagraph.

For the first time in 40 runs, we had no true first-timers. In a way, Heather Sweet was a first-timer – the last time she joined us, she was Heather Johnson. A very special guest was our daughter, Michelle White, now from Rhode Island. Two days before this ABC run, Michelle was the keynote speaker at a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser, and gave such a good speech that she inspired an out-pouring of support for Habitat for Humanity. Way to go, Michelle! Several of us added mileage to the 8-mile adventure by running a couple miles on the Parklands Foundation trails. This was a nice diversion from the roads – running through the woods on soft trails, up and down hills, and along the Mackinaw River. The woods protected us from the wind and we even got to see a couple deer.

Thanks to everyone for their participation, as well as the cloth-ing, financial, and food contributions. Once again, it was so cold that it limited the amount of time participants stayed around to chat & chew. That left more for me to eat, including Meg’s cof-fee cake, Kevin Fahling’s chocolate chip cookies, Mary Ellen Schupbach’s bananas, Deb Aukerman’s bananas, Jessica Giesen’s cake, Becky Roesner’s cookies, and more. (Sorry if I was too busy wolfing down food to ask questions).

As we finish our 4th year of ABC runs, it is heartwarming to reflect on how much everyone has supported the needs of chil-dren in this community. A total of 540 different people have participated in at least one of the 40 ABC runs. A total of $24,240 has been raised ($1276 in 2005, $4867 in 2006, $6108 in 2007, $11,989 in 2008) for 20 different charities (Coats for Kids, Timber Pointe, The Baby Fold, Heart House, Ag-In-The-Classroom, St. Jude, Children’s Advocacy Center, Autism Society, Sugar Grove Foundation, Heartland Head Start, Children’s Organ Transplant Association, Special Olympics, Myles Farnsworth, EPG XC Program, Xanna Garcia, Boys & Girls Club, Haley Carter, Karly Parker, Will Raycraft, Austin Carter).

Last March our Adventures Benefiting Children received the “2008 Not-For-Profit Marketer of the Year” award from the Central Illinois Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Thanks a million to all of you!

In a Lake Run Club member profile that appeared in last September’s newsletter, Nancy Beaty mentioned that she met her goal of completing the 2008 Lake Run after giving birth to her son by c-section a few months earlier. Wow, I thought. I’m sure I wasn’t the only reader who was impressed by this feat. Since then I have wanted to write about running while pregnant in order to open a conversation with other dedicated runners about their during- and post-pregnancy experiences.

Since discovering I was pregnant last July, I’ve been looking for tips on running and pregnancy. Most sources like the maga-zine Fit Pregnancy tend not to give definite recommendations. Presumably this is because every woman is different in her aero-bic capacity and her weight gain during pregnancy. A woman’s need for oxygen increases 20-30 percent over the course of her pregnancy and her heart muscles change to cope with this and the rise in her blood volume. No mainstream sources (or doc-tors or midwives) want to prescribe a nine-month plan due to the stress on the heart and the whole body, and most say to keep the active heart rate under 140. But for someone whose body is used to the activity, a combination of running and walking plus light cross-training seems far superior to ceasing exercise for eight months.

Meanwhile, most publications do invoke the famous photo of marathoner Paula Radcliffe holding her nine-month-old daughter just after winning the New York City Marathon, and while the reader is feeling jealous, they proceed right to a discussion of postpartum running. Apparently the ambitious women with ideal partners, great maternity benefits, round-the-clock nannies, and fitness careers can take advantage of the increased blood in the body in the weeks after delivery to improve on aerobic capacity and speed – kind of like blood doping without being on the Tour de France. I don’t know that most of us can maintain an Olympic regimen after Junior’s birth. I’d like to know what a very amateur marathoner like myself (my most recent was Las Vegas, December 2007) can do right now—as in, this moment in mid-December, when I am 28 weeks pregnant and more than twenty pounds heavier than usual.

When I found out I was pregnant, one of my first concerns was that I keep up my running habit, since it maintains my mood, gets me outdoors, and lets me eat a healthy diet, in-cluding desserts. In fact, one way I found out I was expect-ing was related to running. My partner Don Lacey and I had gone to the Bloomington farmers’ market on a June Saturday, and afterward I went to the trail to run four or five miles before heading home. I made it about three miles and felt so tired and lightheaded that I needed to walk. I chalked it up to the heat and humidity because it was a sunny midmorning. When it happened again the following day at an earlier hour, I decided to make a trip to a certain pink section of the drugstore. Within three days I knew I was expecting.

I did manage to get out on the trail regularly in the first trimester, although I cut back my miles to a maximum of four or five due to fatigue. When I felt at all short of breath

or even slightly dizzy, I slowed to a walk—and I must say, I al-ready was going much more slowly than I used to. I always had a pre-run banana along with a glass of water, stopped for water at the Constitution Trail fountains if I felt thirsty, and hydrated again when I got home for breakfast. I had some queasiness in the first trimester too, but rather than morning sickness I had evening sickness, so it didn’t interfere much with my jogging and was kept at bay by candied ginger, gingersnaps, and iced ginger tea. I am grateful to but sick of ginger.

One surprising result of my walking/running program was that people who saw me on the trail expressed concern at my re-duced pace. On a day when I felt some abdominal discomfort and walked most of my three miles, a cyclist pulled alongside me and said, “You’re usually out here trucking along. Do you have an injury?” He obviously, and non-creepily, was checking that I was okay. It was neighborly of him to ask, even though we didn’t know one another.

On this same day, I did experience stronger cramping on the way home, and had some slight bleeding that gave me quite a shock. I went directly to the obstetrician’s office that morning before

work. All was well, but my OB told me to rest. I took a few days off from running and stuck to gentle yoga until the spotting was over. Obviously anyone who has the slightest cramping or spot-ting during their first trimester should temporarily stop running, as undesirable as that might be. After that day, when I experi-enced any unusual sensations, I would turn around, walk straight home, and lie down on the yoga mat. I’d place a pillow under my head, the soles of my feet together with my knees out to the sides, and my arms relaxed to the sides as well. This pose relaxes and opens the abdomen, and counteracts the negative effects of being upright and bouncing along.

Speaking of bouncing along, articles on pregnancy and running seldom urge women to do something very practical: invest in a couple of serious sports bras (and some new running shoes or in-soles if your checking account allows). My trustiest jog bras were not up to their task, and I was much happier when I acquired no-bounce options. These tend to become round-the-clock clothing items, incidentally, even if they don’t have the curve quotient of a Victoria’s Secret special. Some women prefer the uniboob/shelf look to being uncomfortable, but that is a personal choice.

On the subject of comfort, I also encourage pregnant runners to plan their routes around the conveniently located Constitution Trail portajohns. True, these odiferous locations are not the most pleasant places to stop, especially on a warm day. But I have a renewed appreciation for the maintenance folks who keep them

as clean as possible and make sure to refill the tissue. I salute the Constitution Trail planners for placing portajohns about a mile from my house in either direction, which gives me reassurance that I can have that glass of water before leaving home and be able to avoid dashing into any bushes along the way. Some readers will be saying “TMI! Too much information!” but this is impor-tant, as many of you can attest.

Further, I have found my ability to actually run my runs chang-ing on a weekly and even daily basis. In the third month, run-ning three miles without walking was rare because I’d get out of breath or I’d feel heavy. In the fourth and fifth month I was able to trot three miles again, intermittently walking not because I was winded but because my abdomen was larger. Lately, two miles of running (more like shuffling) is a triumph, and generally I alter-nate between slowly jogging, a half-mile or mile, then walking to recover for 100-200 yards. I also spend more time than I’d like on the elliptical trainer. I console myself by thinking that any activ-ity—even if it is moderate and indoors—keeps a person in shape for childbirth and helps her get back in shape after delivery. As for the 2009 Lake Run, I hesitate to make a resolution, but look for me at least walking the inner loop or working the finish line.

I welcome other women’s pregnancy and postpartum running sto-ries, positive and negative, at [email protected].

The 2008 addition to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series took place Sunday, November 16. It featured a scenic course, great running temperatures and lots of fun.

Dawn Dieckgrafe, Cheryl Dwyer, Bob and Vicki King, their son Matt King, my husband Bill McNamara, and I traveled from central Illinois to San Antonio, Texas, to take part in this inaugural event. The King’s daughter Carolyn Bolsinger, who lives in Fort Worth, also joined our group. Matt and Cheryl ran the marathon, while the rest of us ran the half marathon.

We picked up our registration and gear at the Health & Fitness Expo at the Alamodome (try saying that three times fast after a few beers…) As usual, there were educational sessions and ven-dors galore. One new and interesting thing was the chip timing system used for this race, called ChronoTrack. We each received a disposable “D Tag” to attach to our shoe. This allowed you to leave the finish area after the race without waiting around to have your chip collected – cool. They also handed out cotton gloves to keep our hands toasty during the early morning wait.

San Antonio proved to be a perfect destination for a late-fall run-ning vacation. The pre-dawn temperature was 39° but once the sun peeked over the horizon it warmed up fast. Parking was off-site at the AT&T arena with ample bus transportation to the start line. The race course started at Lions Park where we found cof-fee, bagels, water, sports drink, medical support, Gear Check and of course port-a-potties.

RnR utilizes a wave start. Based on your estimated finish time, you are assigned a race number and corresponding corral with other participants of similar running pace. The gun fires and the first corral is released. The rest of the participants are held back. Then at pre-determined intervals the next corral is released. By using this staggered starting method, the pack spreads out and runners can settle into their racing rhythm immediately.

Bill, Carolyn & Matt started out near the beginning of the pack (the faster runners were assigned lower corral numbers) with Bob not far behind. Vicki and I waited 30 minutes to start, with Dawn and Cheryl a few corrals behind us. Although there are pros and cons to this method, I personally enjoy being able to start run-ning at the start line; and not be still shuffling several miles into the race.

Each race I learn something new… This time, I picked up a won-derful race day tip for those cold morning waits – split your run-ning pants down the side seam & use binder clips to hold them together. Then you can give them a sharp yank to tear them off without having to stop. It is really amazing what you can do with office supplies.

Because we are back-of-the-packers, one of the concerns Vicki & I always have with a small race is getting lost. While we knew that would not be a problem here due to the number of partici-pants, we also quickly figured out that we could just follow the discarded cotton gloves along the course – kind of like a Hash run

– to lead us to the finish line. We were still seeing gloves at miles 11 and 12!! We’re pretty sure the needy folks of San Antonio were going to have warm and toasty fingers all winter!

According to the race literature, “San Antonio, known for its rich history and color, has so much to offer for the marathon and half marathon participants both on and off the course! The thought-fully designed routes run past a variety of signature attractions in San Antonio. Whether walking or running, keep your eyes open and take in the scenery!” Well, we all know how taking in the scenery is much easier said than done. I know if Vicki had not yelled, “There’s the Alamo” somewhere around mile 2, I would have run right by it… It really is a dinky building; I always thought it would be much bigger.

Next was San Pedro Park, supposedly the second oldest park in the U.S. behind Boston Commons, which leads into the Historic District on the south banks of the San Antonio River. Here there were beautifully restored homes with double porch balconies and gardens. (Word to the wise; do not let anybody tell you that San Antonio is flat.) As we headed into the Southtown Arts district, the facades of the various buildings were something to behold – how could anybody sculpt facades as intricate as that?

All along the course there were bands playing and cheerleaders yelling encouragement. One of our favorites was the band play-ing “Love Shack” outside of a gentleman’s club… But our all time favorite was the military cadence coming from a spectator’s small boom box but echoing loudly between the buildings down-town . . . left, left, left, right, left

Then shortly after mile 10, what would a Rock ‘n Roll race be without Elvis? Elvis graciously guided the “Marathoners to the right – Half-marathoners to the left – Thank you – Thank you very much.”

While we headed back towards the Alamodome, Matt and Cheryl headed out to no-man’s land.

According to Matt, miles 11-17 took you south of San Antonio

along the river. As you ran facing the sun, with very little shade, things started to heat up. Fortunately there were water and Cytomax stops every mile. At mile 17 you started heading north again, back towards the downtown area. You ended up cross-ing the San Antonio River three times and encountered plenty of small steep hills. And while there may have been a mission or two along the way, he doesn’t recall seeing any!

Cheryl says she didn't even notice any of the scenery. She re-members seeing the airport, but not any planes; and she remem-bers thinking it was getting very warm. A lot of the bands were starting to pack up, but there were some cheerleaders that she was pretty impressed with. They were still cheering for all the runners, even though they’d probably been screaming for hours. Since Cheryl had been dealing with an injury in the months prior to this race, she waited till the last minute to decide between run-ning the full or half. As she said later that night, “The half versus the full was a big issue for me, but I'm so glad I went right at the Elvis!”

Around mile 11 and 24, when both courses joined back together, we saw the Tower of the Americas (think Seattle Space Needle). This is a 750-foot-tall tower that offers the most breathtaking view of San Antonio while dining at the Tower's revolving res-taurant or drinking at the bar. So they say. I’ll have to take their word for it. Somehow drinking and turning at 750 feet does not really appeal to me – too far to fall from my barstool.

Anyway, we finally reached the Alamodome and that one last (mercifully short) hill before the finish line. There was plenty of food, drinks (yes, beer), and medical tents after the race. We all had a wonderful time and a great run.

Like any first time event, there were some problems of course, most notably with the long wait to catch a shuttle back to your car after the race. Assuming they get that corrected by next year, we would highly recommend this race if you’re looking for a late fall marathon or half marathon. San Antonio is a pretty town with good temperatures and an interesting race course.

Wanted: Runners who are looking to increase their speed, in-crease their distance, or just looking for others to run with! If that describes you, then the Lake Run Club has the program for you... Ride the Wave!

Ride the Wave is for those individuals who are currently able to run 3+ miles comfortably. Our goal is to focus on your speed and distance training for the Lake Run on May 2, 2009. If you plan on running the Lake Run 4.37 loop, our goal is to make you faster! If you plan on running the Lake Run 12K, we will help add to your distance and your speed!

The RtW program will meet on Wednesdays at 5:30pm. We will gather at the White Oak Community Room, at White Oak Park

in Bloomington. The RtW Program begins Feb 18, and our last meeting will be April 29. Our schedule will vary in that some nights we will run around White Oak Lake, other nights we will run some hills or around a track, and we will also run a couple practice turns on the Lake Run course as well.

You will be grouped with others who run about the same pace as you. You will have team leaders to encourage you. And you will meet new friends doing something you enjoy! Not to mention how good it is for you!

We hope you are as excited as we are and we look forward to seeing new faces along with our past participants!

What started as a bet in a local bar turned into a group effort to get in shape, have fun, and achieve new goals. Follow along as 2008 Catch The Wave graduate Julie Shumaker chronicles her group’s trials and tribulations as they discover the running scene.

Thanksgiving eve, 2007 – At a party, I complain to Matt Jontry, a co-worker and friend of my husband Ed, about how out-of-shape I am. He suggests getting in shape for the Lake Run in May. Four miles doesn’t sound too bad, and May is long way away! A little liquid courage tells me to take the bet.

Thanksgiving Day, 2007 – (splitting headache) *&$#*@#! I think I made a bet last night to run 4.37 miles. I can barely think about running 4.37 miles without becoming winded. Maybe I can drag some friends into this. Misery loves company, right?

Mid-January, 2008 – I hear about the Catch The Wave program from a co-worker. Sounds better than trying to come up with a training plan on my own. I pitch the idea to my friend Jaime Skaggs. She’s in. I start talking to more friends, advertising it as an excuse to get together for dinner/drinks every Tuesday night for a few weeks!

February, 2008 – Woo hoo! There are now 6 of us signed up and committed to the program. We all have some things in common – Chenoa residents, Moms, non-runners, and most importantly, out-of-shape!

CTW Day 1, 2008 – So, it is really cold, snowy and dark out for the first CTW meeting. Surely these runner people don’t run in this crap! Well, they do. Arrgghh!! We bite the bul-let and make it through, running on a track with a wonderful blend of ice, packed snow and drifted snow mounds. Now for the get-together as planned – a visit to Panera for some warm soup afterwards.

March, 2008 – The group consensus is to be fair weather runners, so we begin the CTW training program by running indoors at a local church parish hall. Once done with the weekly goal, we look in the training book to next week’s goal. FOUR minutes of continuous running? You have got to be kidding! We cannot do that. Thought we were going to have the “big one” running just two full minutes. In addition, Karen White’s feet are falling asleep. Is this right? Did this happen before running? Nope, back to Often Running for more shoes.

Mid-March, 2008 – We are now running 8 continuous minutes OUTSIDE! There

were too many laps being made in the parish hall. The city block outside the local library is well lit, so we decide to run around that block, once or twice. While stretching after the strenuous run of 8 minutes x 3, we thought, “No way are we going to run 4.37 miles.” That is not even in “minute” increments!

We head off to rethink this adventure over beverages at a local establishment. Lo and behold, some of our non-runner friends who don’t believe we are really doing this are there to witness us in all our sweaty running gear glory. Hmmm…

By this time, several of our husbands decide to join in this run-ning adventure. They saw we were making headway with how we felt, clothes starting to fit better, losing weight, and expanded friendships. They decided to follow us smart women. Ha!

Late March, 2008 – The CTW advice of running a little 5K was taken into account. Many of us ran in the CCHS 5K. This was to help us become familiar with running an actual race. Did you know that you don’t have to RUN the whole thing? Walking breaks ARE accepted and you do not get disqualified!

April, 2008 – The group is now meeting at 8:30pm, after all the kids are snug in their beds. We have expanded our running track to one long street section in Chenoa. We all run at different pac-es, but by keeping to the same street, running back and forth, we can still see each other and say hello. And, the longer stretch of road accommodates the program’s 20 minute run! Did I men-tion it is a continuous 20 minute run?? And yes, we can all do it. What an amazing accomplishment for a bunch of serious non-runners! With these expanded runs, we are starting to see some

possible injuries and discomfort issues arise. But with support and advice, we sort it out, offer suggestions and look at different ways to overcome them.

May 3, 2008 – Well, the Lake Run race is here. We’ve experi-enced all types of weather already – hot, cold, rain, snow, wind – and we’re ready for whatever the day brings. How amazing it is to think that a simple bar bet, and the CTW program, has resulted in 12 former couch potatoes who are now up and moving. We don our bright blue “Catch the Wave” shirts. Let’s do it!

Throughout the race, fellow CTW participants holler encourag-ing words to each other. All six of us in our core group of girls cross the finish line with cheers, tears, and hugs. Wow! We just ran 4.37 miles. We just ran 4.37 miles!! We did it!

After the race, we partake in the requisite beverages and cheese-burgers at Green Gables. Of course we were looking forward to the free beverages we had heard so much about, but it was too darn cold to stand around outside. We will go inside, pay for beer and be warm – WE HAVE EARNED IT! And here we go again – I ask the girls what our next running adventure will be. They ask me how many beers I’ve had! As a native of the Quad Cities, I’ve got my sights set on the Bix 7 (the last weekend in July). Yeah right… okay, let’s do it!

July, 2008 – By this point we are heavy into training for the Bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa. During CTW we had been given ID tags for our shoes and I asked for one for my husband Ed as well (who had been training at home). On July 9th, Ed was running out in the country and was headed back to town. At the first house he reached, a neighbor came out to speak with him and wanted to know what was on his shoe. Ed said, "That’s so if I pass out peo-ple we will know who I am and who to call when they find me in the ditch." They laughed, ended their conversation, and went on their way. Ed ran a few more feet… then blacked out and fell onto the road, face first. The neighbor came to his aid. Long story short - my husband ended up with a broken jaw and stitches.

This very easily could have happened while he was in the country all alone. CTW doesn’t just provide motivation and instruction; they provide safety tips and equipment for the times you would never anticipate. I am very grateful for the ID tags on our shoes; they provide a sense of relief that someone would know who to call.

July 26, 2008 – Needless to say Ed did not run the Bix 7, but boy oh boy did the girls!! As the only “quadcitian” in the group, I knew about the infamous Brady Street Hill – the other girls not so much… If I heard one “oh my goodness” I heard a thousand; and the kicker was we were able to run it with 13,000 other runners! (Did you notice that I am referring to us as runners??) We ran up and down all around Davenport, dancing to the bands that line the streets and loving the atmosphere. People were cheering for us!! And we each finished the 7 mile race with a PR! Come on, give us the PR on this one – we earned it! I did tell the girls I held back a little; I didn’t want to set the bar too high for next year. Wait a minute, did I say “next year”?

After the race we walked through the street fest, found a band, and danced for five hours – on concrete, after running 7 miles… Have you caught on we are a little crazy? Others did! We had people approach us and indicate they had run the race, gone home to shower, take a nap, get dressed and come back to the fest. They were still tired and there we were – still sweaty, still wearing our

race numbers, and still making memories of a lifetime.

So what else has been happening since then?

Chenoa Run Club – A couple of the girls and their husbands start-ed a local club and they have been running routes through town and into the country, of course wearing our shoe ID tags and with wonderful food-filled gatherings at the finish.

Jaime & JD Skaggs – took their running out of state and jour-neyed to Disney to be apart of a run through the Animal Kingdom – consisting of not only a run but also an obstacle course and scavenger hunt. Their medals are really cool.

Some ladies have even placed in races and others have taken on new challenges and longer distances.

So I guess to make a long story even longer – although some of us have fallen off the wagon here and there, we all plan to ei-ther join CTW again or move on to Ride the Wave for 2009. We have had a wonderful year of doubt, agony, motivation and ac-complishment, but most of all deeper friendships. All thanks to the Lake Run Club, Catch The Wave and one crazy night before Thanksgiving!!!

Run for a Reason in the Illinois Marathon…Run for the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETYby Scott Burnsmier

What is a Charity Runner? The Charity Runner program is the American Cancer Society's signature endurance event program that enables athletes to dedi-cate their training and participation in long-distance races to the fight against cancer. Due to the overwhelming success of the Chicago program launched in 1995, the Income Development Council recently decided to provide resources to help build the program nationwide.

The Charity Runner program has helped more than 3,800 athletes accomplish their goal of completing a marathon, half-marathon, or triathlon while raising more than $4.6 million to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease. Locally, the American Cancer Society has provided over $4 million to the University of Illinois in grants. We have also provided 995 rides for cancer patients to and from their appointments free of charge.

Is there a minimum fundraising goal?As an American Cancer Society Charity Runner team member, we ask for your help in funding the fight against cancer. We have created a modest fundraising goal of $1,000 per participant for each of our races to enable you to have a direct impact on eliminating the disease. Our objective is to create a competitive cost structure within market and race size; as well as keep pro-gram costs low to ensure that every dollar raised is wisely spent. Whether you have fundraising experience or you're brand new to the idea, we offer resources, tips, and suggestions that will help you be a successful fundraiser. How do I raise the money?Raising money is easier than you think. Consider hosting a din-ner party, offering to walk the neighbor's dog, or sponsoring a bake sale for donations. You can also send letters or emails to recruit friends and family. Be creative and have fun. We have a variety of ideas for those just starting out. Visit www.charityrun-ner.org for more tips and resources or call 1-217-356-9076 and ask to speak with Scott.

What are the benefits of participating?By helping to raise funds for American Cancer Society, you will receive:

Free team training to help you achieve your goals• Team support and invitations to social events•

The Lake Runner • February 2009 Page 21

by Merlin Anderson

This is the fourth year of Bob Brandt’s Tandem Bike Challenge. In 2005, Bob bet I couldn’t get 20 riders (I got 30). In 2006, Bob bet I couldn’t tandem 2000 miles (I got 2001). In 2007, Bob bet the tandem rides wouldn’t average 16 mph (Bob won, so I had to buy the beverage of Bob’s choice). In explaining how I missed the speed goal, I bragged that I got 54 riders in 2007 and he replied, “How many of those rode more than once? Repeat business is what counts!” Only 17 rode more than once, so the 2008 bet was that I couldn’t convince 20 riders to go at least twice. Sorry, Bob, it’s your turn to buy… 24 people rode at least twice!

Due to the economic slowdown, there will be no valuable prizes. However, the honorary titles for those that rode at least twice are:

Tandem Queen: • Meg Anderson for riding most often, 15 great rides totaling 191 miles. Her grand total (since 1993) is 4,039 miles. Imagine tolerating me for that long.

Princesses: A precious total of 87 miles were enjoyed with •my daughter Michelle, and granddaughters Jasmine, Imara, and Nadia. Imara even went on two 20-mile rides (after telling me I was crazy to bike 20 miles).

Duchess of Distance: • Donna Creditor for riding a total of 356 miles in 2008. Donna is also the Duchess of Distance Running, completing several ultra-marathons again this year.

Sultan of Streak: • John Kastigar rode once a month for a total of 182 miles. John’s streak of riding once a month is up to 23 months, dating back to February 2007.

First Frau (& Last): • Stacy Brandt (138 miles) started January 6 and finished December 27.

Yogini: • Leann Steidinger (119 miles) for introducing me to yoga.

Annual Streak Co-Queens: • Carrie Hymer (115 miles) and Becky Roesner (74 miles) for riding nine years in a row. Both Carrie and Becky have way more than 1,000 miles total.

Contessa of Change: • Lisa Tippy for riding with me 104 miles before changing her last name by marrying Randy Ehlers.

Kentucky Countess: • Saori Hanaki-Martin for fitting in 96 miles, despite living in Kentucky.

First Couple: • Deb (73 miles) & Roger (40 miles) Aukerman, most miles by a couple.

RAGBRAI Royalty: • Lynn Reints for riding 60 miles. One ride was a tune-up for RAGBRAI.

Baroness of Bribe: • Mindy Klimkiewicz (54 miles) for agreeing to go on a second ride with me only after I bribed her by offering to contribute to her Team in Training fund-raising.

Baroness of Boston: • Lisa Sparks (54 miles) for qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

The Wednesday Knight: • Bruce Sutter (52 miles) for going on two Wednesday night rides.

Cross-Training Queen: • Amber Thomas (45 miles) for riding twice during her marathon training.

Alaskan Queen: • Jessica Giesen (42 miles) for fitting in two rides before her Alaska trip.

Volunteer Queen: • Dawn Dieckgrafe (30 miles) for all she does for the Volunteer Committee.

Appointment Empress: • Kathy Alexander (21 miles) for letting John Kastigar take her appointment when I double-booked.

Viscount of Vitesse: • Jim Williamson (10 miles) for helping me ride to Vitesse for repairs.

Another 15 rode once, successfully resisting my attempts toschedule another ride:

Ski King: • Scott Weiher (50 miles). Scott (Tanya’s friend) works at a Ski Resort in Wyoming.

Returning Royalty: • Sonja Fritsche (29 miles) for joining me again after 6 years off.

Speed Queen: • Anne Schmidt (28 miles) for doing most of the work to average 17 mph.

Volunteer Tsarina: • Jill Usiak (28 miles) for heading up the Volunteer Committee.

Ice Cream Queen: • Lynn Shook (27 miles) for going on the ice cream ride (and Scott for buying).

Countess of Climbing: • Carolyn Sutter (27 miles) for her alpine adventures with Bruce.

Contessa of Consistency: • Suzanne Rogers (26 miles) for riding one time four years in a row.

Birthday Baroness: • Melissa Adams (17 miles) for riding on her birthday (June 17).

Former Queen: • Kim Guttshow (14 miles) for being the 2006 “Non-Family Tandem Queen”.

Annual Streak King: • Bob Brandt (10 miles), for riding tandem nine years in a row.

Roller-blade Royalty: • Val Funk (10 miles) for riding with me after roller-blading 20 miles.

Bears Baron: • Tom Lauritson (10 miles) for taping a Bears game in order to ride.

Baroness of Boston II: • Erin Furimsky (10 miles) for qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Lord of In-Laws: • Richard Valentin (5 miles) for being a great brother-in-law.

Marquis of Minimalism: • Pat Sheridan (1 mile) for proving that less is more.

Thanks everyone for another great year!

is a 10-week training program designed to help beginning runners learn the basics of running and rusty runners to get back in to it. The short-term goal of the program is to help participants prepare for the Lake Run 4.37 mile race held at Lake Bloomington on Saturday May 2, 2009. The long-term goal is to help participants get on the road to a life of better fitness and health, and to develop a better understanding of the deceptively complicated art of running.

Who Should Join?

Anyone who has ever dreamed about running but just did not know how to start Anyone with a desire to begin living a healthier lifestyle and increase their level of fitness Folks who have run in the past and want to get back into the sport gradually Those who run a little but would like to work up to running longer distances

What Happens At Class?

Sessions begin with a short discussion on topics important to your success as a runner, including stretching, cross - training, nutrition, running tips from the pros, hydration, and more. THEN, we hit the streets for a training run. We start out slowly; walking and running. Don't worry about being too slow to keep up, we divide runners into small groups according to their speed and fitness level; there will be a group to fit you. Experienced runners accompany each group to provide on-the-run coaching and encouragement. As long as the weather isn't severe (tornadoes, hail, lightning), we'll meet and run outside no matter how cold, hot, humid, or wet it is. Check the Lake Run Club website at www.lakerunclub.org for more class information. Your Registration Fee Includes:

Ten weeks of darn good instruction that will have you ready to run the Lake Run Paid registration to the Lake Run race, a Lake Run race T-shirt, and other cool give-aways A limited edition Catch The Wave training T-shirt A day-by-day running schedule and training log that will keep your training on track Note: Your registration fee does NOT include membership in the Lake Run Club

See reverse side for information about registration fees, dates, and mailing address

2009 Meeting Dates: Every Wednesday February 25 through April 29

5:15pm – 5:30pm sign-in 5:30pm – 6:00pm program

6:00pm – 7:00pm run Capen Auditorium in Edwards Hall on the northwest corner of ISU Quad

(We have parking figured out!) FAQs I can already run about 4 miles. Should I sign up for Catch The Wave? Catch The Wave is designed for beginning and rusty runners. If you run 3 or more miles consistently, you may want to consider Ride The Wave, an intermediate running program. Check the Lake Run Club web site at www.lakerunclub.org for Ride The Wave program information. I'd like to take part but I've had health problems in the past. What should I do? Ask your doctor if your participation in a running program is a good idea. If your physician gives you approval, PLEASE make your Catch The Wave team leader aware of your limitations. I can barely run a block now! Will I ever be able to run 4.37 miles? Yes, you can! You may even discover you have a knack for running, but it will take work and you’ll need to run more than just once a week. Many of our Catch The Wave team leaders started in this program. By following the training log you’ll gradually increase your time running. You’ll be running comfortably for longer distances before you know it. What if it rains on the night we're supposed to have class? We'll meet and, unless there is lightning or hail, we’ll run outdoors. In the case of extreme weather, check the Lake Run Club forum at www.lakerunclub.org for last-minute class information. What if my group is too slow or too fast for me? No problem. Our goal is to get you in to a group that is just right for you. Don’t get discouraged. There will be a group where you’re comfortable. What should I wear to class? For starters, wear good running shoes. Beyond that wear whatever you're comfortable running in but layer when it’s cold so you can be warm walking to class, shed a layer and be warm running, and add a layer to be warm after class. We’ll discuss clothing early in the program but, if history is any guide, dress warm the first few weeks. A shameless endorsement: The folks at Often Running have many thousands of miles behind them and can fit you with the right shoes. Am I too Old, Slow, or Out of Shape to join? Absolutely not! Catch The Wave participants are all ages, sizes, and skill levels. Experienced runners will be there every step of the way to encourage, coach, and answer your questions. Can my child participate? Catch The Wave is designed as an adult running program and that is our first priority. If you feel your child can keep up with the program, it’s your responsibility to register and run with them and monitor their progress. We strongly recommend that children under 12 not participate. We do not provide day care for children.
