Welcome to Banyule’s community Christmas celebrationChristmas is a special time and Banyule Council’s Carols by Candlelight is a well-loved tradition, setting the tone for what we hope will be an enjoyable and relaxing break away from our busy daily lives.
Once again this year Ivanhoe Park plays host to Carols by Candlelight. With its picturesque parkland, natural amphitheatre, and proximity to the dazzling Boulevard Lights, the stage is set for a magical evening.
Enjoy some pre-show activities and flavoursome food, then at 7.30pm, find a spot beneath the trees and get ready to sing along with Rhonda Burchmore, the Australian Children’s Choir, the Diamond Valley Brass Band, Stephen Coutts and Samantha Robertson, The Litter Sisters, The Kazoos and Santa himself!
Mayor’s welcomeI thank you all for coming to enjoy our very own Carols by Candlelight. Council has been holding this event for more than 20 years to bring the community together to get into the festive spirit.
I take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated to our Banyule Children’s Gift Appeal which delivers presents to children from disadvantaged families to brighten up their Christmas.
I would also like to acknowledge our valued sponsors Haughton Stotts Real Estate, Commonwealth Bank and Cadbury. Their contribution has helped to make this event truly special.
I hope that you have a wonderful evening with your family, friends and neighbours, and on behalf of the staff at Banyule Council and my fellow councillors, I wish you a merry Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year.

The First Noel
Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band
The First Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds
in fields as they lay;In fields as they lay, keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far,And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.
Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heavenly Lord;
That hath made heaven and earth of naught,And with his blood mankind hath bought
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

Once in Royal David’s City
Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band
Once in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her BabyIn a manger for His bed:
Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little Child.
He came down to earth from heaven,Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,And His cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love;For that Child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above,And He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone.

Away in a Manger
Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! look down from the sky,And stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stayClose by me forever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,And take us to heaven to live with thee there.
