UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — WWE superstar John Cena granted his 300th wish to a 7- year-old Pennsylvania boy with a spinal condition, continuing his streak as the most popular celebrity granter in Make-A- Wish Foundation history. Jonny Littman wanted to meet his hero, and the WWE ac- commodated that wish Monday night before an episode of “Raw” live from New York’s Long Is- land. But Jonny got a bonus to his wish. On Wednesday morning, Jon- ny was being interviewed on “Good Morning America” when Sam Champion asked him about his green T-shirt. After Jonny told him it was John Cena, Champion asked if anyone knew the WWE Superstar. The pro wrestler and actor walked out to Jonny’s surprise and presented him with another gift. This time it was tickets for him and his family to attend the 1,000th episode of the WWE show. To put Cena’s 300 granted wishes in perspective, Michael Jordan has granted around 200 and Kobe Bryant is in the 100- wish range. “I truly give hats off to Make- A-Wish for keeping statistics,” Cena said Monday before the show. “They had a nice little cel- ebration for me at 200, and I humbly said we should do it at 1,000. “We’re just getting started,” he said enthusiastically. But Cena was clearly touched by the latest one. “I’m just flattered completely that I could be the wish,” he said. Jonny, from Hop Bottom, Pa., has severe congenital malforma- tion and spina bifida and uses a wheelchair. He spoke to his hero for a few minutes and took some pictures with him. He even put on his WWE Championship belt. His mother, Ruth, says his surgeons wore it during his last surgery. After signing T-shirts and WWE merchandise and present- ing him with a videogame sys- tem, the superstar graciously walked out of the room. Cena prepared for his featured match, and Jonny and his family waited ROB MERRILL Associated Press Kenny Chesney, “Welcome to the Fishbowl” (Colum- bia Nashville) He’s a four-time Country Music Association Enter- tainer of the Year with more than 30 No. 1 country hits and a perennially pop- ular road show, but don’t try to pigeon-hole Kenny Chesney. The first single, “Feel Like a Rock Star,” is a duet with Tim McGraw destined to bring down the house every time they play it together on tour this summer. But for every party anthem there’s a melancholy tune. “I’m gonna cry right now and that’s OK/We’re all gonna die someday,” sings Chesney in “Sing ‘Em Good My Friend,” a weeper about a woman in the hospital who was once the muse for a guy with a guitar. The result feels like an uneven album, but in a world where the money is made on singles and tours, fans probably won’t care. (Also, “Can’t Let Her Get Away” was released in 1991 after the group fizzled out.) Nearly three years since Michael died while prepar- ing for his comeback tour, four of his brothers — Mar- lon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie — are set for their own return to the stage as The Jacksons. It hasn’t been easy. “The brothers don’t know this, but I’ve broken down several times and cried during rehearsals,” said Jer- maine during a recent rehearsal break on a soundstage in Burbank, Calif. “I’m so used to Michael being on the right and then Marlon, Jackie, on and on. It’s just some- thing we never get used to.” The brothers are launching their “Unity” tour on Wednesday, five days ahead of the third anniversary of Michael’s death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009. “For me, this cycle that comes around every year — this day, that day — that doesn’t affect me because it af- fects me every day,” said Marlon. “When that day comes around, it’s the same. You learn to live with it. I still wake up sometimes and go, ‘Jeez. I can’t believe my brother’s not here.”’ Following Michael’s death, the four brothers ap- peared in the A&E reality series “The Jacksons: A Fam- ily Dynasty,” which chronicled their loss and attempt to stage a comeback before their brother died. Jermaine said the brothers have wanted to reunite on their own for years, but after Michael’s passing, they needed time to heal — and the tour is another step in that process. By CHRISTY LEMIREAP Movie Critic“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire

Hunter”: Those four words, strung together in that order, sound like a lot of fun, don’tthey? It’s a totally ridiculous

premise, this notion that the16th U.S. president lived awhole ‘nother secret life, prowl-ing about at night, seeking outbloodsuckers. But it’s a creativeone, and it should have provid-ed the basis for a free-wheeling,campy good time.Unfortunately, director

Timur Bekmambetov andwriter Seth Grahame-Smith,adapting his own best-sellingnovel, take this concept entirelytoo seriously. What ideallymight have been playful andknowing is instead uptight anddreary, with a visual schemethat’s so fake and cartoony, itdepletes the film of any sense ofdanger.Bekmambetov, the Kaza-

khstan-born director whose2008 action hit “Wanted” wassuch a stylish, sexy thrill, weirdly stages set pieces thatare muddled and hard to follow— a horse stampede, for exam-ple, or the climactic brawlaboard a runaway train. The

murky (and needless) 3-D con-version doesn’t help matters, and it’s a waste of what wasprobably some lovely cine-matography from five-time Os-car nominee Caleb Deschanel. He also keeps going back tosome of the same gimmicky us-es of 3-D, including slo-moslashings and beheadings thatsend black vampire blood spurt-ing from the screen; the repeti-tion of this trick produces thesame numbing effect that it hadin Tarsem Singh’s “Immortals”last year. The tall, lanky Benjamin

Walker certainly looks the partas the title character (he alsolooks distractingly like a youngLiam Neeson, and actuallyplayed a younger version ofNeeson in 2004’s “Kinsey”) butthere’s no oomph to his perfor-mance, no “there” there. Hedoesn’t exude any confidence orcharisma, either as he becomesincreasingly skilled in van-quishing his foes or as he suc-ceeds in wooing the sophisticat-ed (and engaged) Mary Todd(Mary Elizabeth Winstead). And once he becomes the Lin-coln we actually know — withthe beard and the hat and thatbig, famous speech — it merelyfeels like he’s playing dress-up

rather than embodying the spir-it of a towering historical figure. His story begins in childhood

when, according to this revi-sionist lore, Lincoln’s motherwas killed by a vampire beforehis very eyes. He seeks revengeas an adult, but doesn’t knowexactly what he’s doing orwhom he’s dealing with. Enterveteran vampire hunter HenrySturges (Dominic Cooper), a de-bauched and flamboyant Britwho helps him hone the toolshe’ll need but who has an ulte-rior motive of his own. (Eventhe training montage, a staple

of any movie about a warrior’stransformation, feels oddly re-strained.)After wielding his silver-

tipped axe on some practice tar-gets — these evil fiends roamall around us, you know — Lin-coln is finally ready to take onhis nemeses: vampire business-man Jack Barts (MartonCsokas) and the genteel South-erner Adam (Rufus Sewell),who’s sort of the king of Vam-pire Nation. (He gets some helpfrom Anthony Mackie as hischildhood friend and JimmiSimpson as the shopkeeper Lin-coln worked for in Springfield.)At the same time, he’s kinda

thinking hemight want to jumpinto politics during this tumul-tuous time in America. And soyou have this intensifyingstruggle between humans andthe living dead playing outagainst the backdrop of theNorth and South on the brink ofCivil War. The notion that thehorrors of slavery should beplaced on a parallel with mon-ster horror as entertainment isreally rather distasteful, punc-tuated by the sight of vampiresgetting gored on a battlefieldwith Lincoln delivering the Get-tysburg Address in the back-ground.

By CHRISTY LEMIREAP Movie CriticSteve Carell and Keira

Knightley, together as a couplewho’ve fallen suddenly andmadly in love? Surely the apoc-alypse is nigh. It’s coming in three weeks, to

be exact, in “Seeking a Friendfor the End of the World,” thefeature directing debut fromscreenwriter Lorene Scafaria(“Nick & Norah’s InfinitePlaylist”).An asteroid 70 miles (113

kilometers) wide is hurtling to-ward Earth, ensuring destruc-tion and doom for the entireplanet. Scafaria explores howpeople behave when the rules ofpolite society are stripped away,a premise that isn’t exactly nov-el — the world ended just lastyear, much more artfully, inLars Von Trier’s “Melancholia”— but one that’s brimming withpotential for absurdist, satiricalcomedy.Within that setting, Carell

and Knightley get thrown to-gether. The pairing doesn’tmake a whole lot of sense on pa-per — in the real world or onthe big screen — but for themost part they have enough un-expected, opposites-attract lika-

bility and find themselves inenough strangely amusing situ-ations to make the movie work. The mawkish third act, howev-er, nearly destroys all that ap-peal.Carell’s character, Dodge, is

very much in the vein of the de-tached and depressed but wrylyobservant figures he’s playedbefore: He’s an insurance agentwhose wife takes off when newsof the asteroid breaks. Knight-ley is his downstairs neighborin the apartment building, Pen-

ny, a free-spirited, pot-smokingBrit with a penchant for classicvinyl records. She is your quin-tessential Manic Pixie DreamGirl.Naturally, these two people

need to go on a road trip. All Dodge wants to do is

track down his high schoolsweetheart, The One That GotAway, in hopes of rekindling theromance in his final days.(Clearly, she’s meant to repre-sent everything he wanted outof life and never achieved.) Pen-

ny, meanwhile, is fresh off a badbreak-up (from a ridiculouslyself-centered musician playedby Adam Brody) and all shewants to do is get home to Eng-land to ride it out with her fam-ily. Dodge knows a guy with aplane who can help her.Their journey (Scafaria also

wrote the script) is buoyed byindividual moments, and bysome of the inspired castingthat’s revealed at each stopalong the way. Among the bestscenes takes place at the begin-

ning: an end-of-the-world partyDodge’s friend Warren (RobCorddry) and his wife (ConnieBritton) throw, where civilized,middle-aged people cavort inwild ways because ... why not?Nothing matters anymore. Sim-ilarly, Dodge and Penny findthemselves at a TGI Friday’s-style restaurant calledFriendsy’s where everyone hasclearly been doing Ecstasy andthe possibility of indulgenceand danger lurks in every fakeTiffany-lamped corner.

But enjoyably odd momentslike these give way to sentimen-tality by the end, as if Scafariadidn’t feel comfortable just let-ting her characters succumb tothe inevitable. No, they have to“learn something.” They have tofind catharsis and redemption. They have to tidy things up be-fore the end — and the film’sending itself feels too tidy, aswell. The mess would have been

more interesting — and morereal.

why she doesn't just take herown pictures of us! I viewthese pictures as personalitems. I don't think they arefor others to own and display.Am I wrong? How can Irefuse requests for copies ofmy pictures without offend-ing someone? -- L.E. INCINCINNATIDEAR L.E.: I think you're

viewing this scenario fromthe wrong perspective. Per-haps your mother-in-law-to-be isn't as comfortable or cre-ative with a camera as youare. If she didn't have warmfeelings for you, she wouldn'twant to own and display thepictures she's requesting.Unless you become less

territorial and change yourattitude, I foresee a troubledrelationship with your moth-er-in-law looming on the hori-zon. Get the picture?

make you feel the sorrow,” saidTito. “Then again, there areother songs that bring so muchjoy and happiness, such as‘ABC’ and ‘I Want You Back’and the up-tempo stuff like‘This Place Hotel.’ I just imag-ine how he used to walk andspin and do all these things. You can feel his presencehere.”The Jacksons’ tour kicks off

at Rama Casino in Ontario,Canada, and is scheduled toend July 29 at the SnoqualmieCasino Amphitheater in Sno-qualmie, Wash. Other stops in-clude Detroit’s Fox Theatre,Los Angeles’ Greek Theatreand Harlem’s sold-out ApolloTheatre, where the Jackson 5won an amateur night in 1969before rocketing to fame.Michael later forged un-

precedented success as a soloartist. His superstardom wasunrivaled, and his brotherscouldn’t capture similar ac-claim or sales with their soloprojects or last studio album,1989’s mostly Michael-less“2300 Jackson Street,” but

their legacy as a group has re-mained unchanged. The Jack-son 5 were inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame in1997.While various combinations

of the brothers have reunitedto perform over the years, in-cluding at last year’s “MichaelForever” tribute concert inWales, “Unity” will mark thefirst time the brothers havetoured together since their fi-nal “Victory” outing in 1984.(Marlon said Randy, who offi-cially joined The Jacksons in1975, elected not to join thetour but noted that theyoungest Jackson brother waswelcome at any time.)“We have a certain magic,”

said Jackie. “Once we get outhere and run it down a coupletimes, it comes back to you. I’mnot (moving) like I used to, butwe still got it.”Will the fans think so —

and will they turn out to seeThe Jacksons, whose ages nowrange from 55 to 61, performtheir hits without Michael?Last year, Cirque du Soleil

launched “Michael Jackson:The Immortal World Tour” inLas Vegas. The show featuringdancers and acrobatic acts per-forming routines set to M.J.

tunes has been among the toptouring acts this year, and “Im-mortal” will return to Vegas fora residency at the MandalayBay Hotel and Casino. However, Gary Bongiovan-

ni, editor-in-chief of concert in-dustry trade publication Poll-star, doesn’t believe The Jack-sons will achieve similar suc-cess with their smaller en-deavor.“The Jacksons were really

all about Michael,” said Bon-giovanni. “The Cirque duSoleil show was successful be-cause it was Cirque du Soleiland Michael’s music. I don’tknow if that portends much forthe remaining brothers andtheir ability to generate enthu-siasm for ticket sales.”The brothers are undaunt-

ed, hoping to release an albumof new music then go back outon tour.“It’s like riding a bike,” said

Marlon. “You never forget, butyou do need to tweak a fewthings.”———Follow AP Entertainment

DEAR ABBY: My mother-in-law, "Lisa," is 50 and mar-ried to husband No. 5. I'll callhim "Steve." He is 38. (Lisa'sson is 31.)The problem isn't the age

difference. It's the fact thather husband refuses to hold asteady job. Steve is often "be-

to go into the Nassau Colise-um for a live televised week-ly show, “Raw.”After he left the room,

Jonny chanted: “Cena. JohnCena. Cena.”Cena is following a WWE

tradition of granting wishes. The organization grantsabout 140 wishes per year be-tween requests to meet WWESuperstars or attend its liveshows. The tradition startedin the early 1980s with HulkHogan being the most re-quested.And while these wishes

make children with life-

tween jobs" for six to eightmonths at a crack. Lisa had ajob with the same company for28 years and has a very niceincome. My husband and I are sick

of seeing Steve mooching offhis mom. He drives around ina new truck, dresses well, hasa nice place to live and any-thing else he wants -- all at mymother-in-law's expense.Abby, she retired recently,

DEAR ABBY: My parentswill celebrate their 25th wed-ding anniversary this sum-mer. I know this is a huge dealfor them, and I'd like to dosomething really nice.I have been considering

throwing them a party be-cause they were never able tohave a real wedding recep-tion. It would probably in-

clude a guest list of about 150.However, because I am a full-time college student, myfunds are limited.I want to do something my

parents will like, but I don'tknow how I'll pay for it. Whatcould I do that will be nice, but not require me to take outa loan? --AMY IN TENNESSEEDEAR AMY: Under no cir-

NEW YORK (AP) — Kidshear it from their elders allthe time: “Use your words.” Inthe case of Aaron Sorkin, thatchildhood lesson clearly stuck. As the awards-laden writer

of TV’s “The West Wing” andsuch films as “The SocialNetwork” and “Moneyball,”Sorkin uses well-chosen wordsby the carload to propel hisstory-telling with insight andwit. You don’t look to Sorkin for

car chases, pyrotechnics orother spectacle. It’s his words— playful, brainy, heartfeltand often fired out in hot-potato exchanges — that dothe heavy lifting. Yet make itlook easy. Now, having worked his

verbal magic on the nation’scapital (in “The West Wing”),sports talk (”Sports Night”)and the backstage world of TVcomedy (”Studio 60 on theSunset Strip”), Sorkin hasturned his attention totelevision news.“I consider it a valentine,”

he says. It’s also anentertaining exercise in toughlove.“The Newsroom,” which

premieres on HBO Sunday at10 p.m. EDT, centers on WillMcAvoy (played by JeffDaniels), a cable-news starwho, in middle age, is coastingwith his so-so nightlynewscast, happy to avoidmaking waves with hard-hitting stories or controversialreports. Why not? He getsgood ratings. He’s “the JayLeno of news anchors,” onecritic sniffs — popularbecause he doesn’t botheranyone. That’s about to change.

Much to Will’s surprise, thenewly hired executiveproducer for his broadcast,“News Night,” turns out to beMacKenzie McHale.
