2 About this Guide
This guide is intended for business intelligence decision-makers and administrators responsible for installing SAP
BusinessObjects Web Intelligence 4.1 on Windows client machines in corporate environments.
You can install the desktop client interactively (from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform
Client Tools media, or from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Java BI launch pad). You can
also install the desktop client silently (using a script or from the command line).
This guide also covers the new features in this version of the desktop client, and important information about
planning, preparing, and performing installations and maintenance tasks.
Note
Although the desktop client is only available on machines running Microsoft Windows operating systems, you
can use it to connect to servers running other operating systems.
For more information about features and capabilities, see the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform
Web Intelligence User Guide.

3 Planning Installations
3.1 Getting started
3.1.1 Overview of Web Intelligence
You can use SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence to work with secured or unsecured documents, with or
without a connection to a Central Management Server.
The desktop client lets you create documents and edit, format, print, and save them. The following are common
scenarios for using the desktop client:
You do not want to install a CMS or an application server.
You cannot connect to a CMS while traveling or working in a location without network access.
You want to work with documents continuously, if there are server-side interruptions or performance issues.
You want to improve calculation performance.
Tip
Local calculations are typically faster than server calculations.
For more information about features and capabilities, see the SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence User Guide.
3.1.2 Installation types
You can install SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence Rich Client on a local Windows machine. In a small or mid-
range deployment, you can perform one of the following interactive installations:
Installation from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Client Tools media involves running
an installation program.
Installation from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Java BI launch pad involves
downloading and running the installation program.
If you have a large-scale deployment, you can perform one of the following silent installations:
Scripted silent installation involves writing parameters to a response.inifile, and then using the file to run
the installation program.
Command-line silent installation involves passing parameters to the installation program directly.
Note
The online help system is installed on the local computer by default, but you can also install the help files to a
different location and then direct Web Intelligence Rich Client to use those files. For information about how to
make the online help system available after installing it to a custom location, see To specify the folder or URL
for online help [page 22].

3.1.2.1 Integration
Note
Before you install SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence 4.1, you should uninstall any previous versions of the
desktop client.
You can install Web Intelligence side by side with SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1 and SAP
BusinessObjects Client Tools 4.1.
3.2 Key tasks
3.2.1 Interactive installations
Interactive installations allow you to install and configure SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence on a Windows
client machine using a wizard.
You can run an interactive installation from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Client Tools
media, or from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Java BI launch pad.
Caution
Before you install the desktop client, ensure that your SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform
administrator has provided users with desktop client application rights, and that previous versions of the
desktop client had been uninstalled.
See the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Administrator Guidefor information about setting
rights using the Central Management Console.

3.2.2 Silent installations
Silent installations allow you to install and configure SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence on multiple Windowsclient machines.
You can run an unattended silent installation from the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform Client
Tools media using a response.inifile. You can also specify installation parameters directly at the command
line. All options available during interactive installations are also available during silent installations.
Note
Scripted and command-line silent installations use the same parameters. Using a response.inifile is
recommended if your installation requires a large number of parameters, or if you want to integrate scripts and
commands into your own installation scripts.
SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform does not support silent installations when the installation
files are on multiple media sources. In this case, you must first copy all installation contents to a single location,
and then run the silent installation.

6.5 Post-installation configuration of fonts in thefontalias.xml file
You can increase the number of fonts available in Web Intelligence by manually editing the fontalias.xmlfile.
On UNIX, the file is located in the following directory:
/sap_bobj/enterprise_xi40/_x64/fonts
On the 64-bit Windows server, the file is located in the following folder:
\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\win64_x64\fonts
On the 32-bit Windows client, the file is located in the following folder:
\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\win32_x86\fonts
Note
To ensure consistent fonts are used, ensure that the fonts added to Web Intelligence Rich Client client machine
deployments are also added to BI Platform server machine deployments.
A sample of the default fontalias.xmlappears below:
You need to do the following:
Define a FONTentity for each new font.
List the font name in the NAMEattribute for the Web Intelligence applications.
Specify in each FONTATTRIBUTEentity the LOGICAL name of the font, as well as the PHYSICAL(file name) of
the font. Any substation fonts will be listed in the PHYSICALattribute separated by semicolons.
Give each FONTentity four FONTFAMILYentities, one for each of the PLATFORMtypes:
Table 4:
Platform Name Description

set (embedded) in PDF exports.

Platform Name Description
win Font name as it is listed in Windows OS Used in Microsoft export formats, such
as Excel.
java Font name as it appears in Java. Sub
stitution fonts are separated by
comma.
Used in the Java Web Intelligence App
let or Rich Client interface.
html Font name specified in HTML style.
Substitution fonts are separated by
comma.
Used in the Web Intelligence HTML in
terface.
Note
Specify the font name in the NAME attribute. Use single-quotes around the font name if it contains space
characters. To specify possible substitute fonts, specify their name after the font name, separated by
commas.
The ttfPLATFORMentity should contain four FONTATTRIBUTEentities, for each possible combination of BOLD
and ITALICBoolean attributes:
Table 5:
BOLD ITALIC Description
false false Regular typeface
true false Bold typeface
false true Italic typeface
true true Bold italic typeface
Note
We recommend that you use typeface-specific TrueType fonts for bold, italic and bold-italic. If a non-regular
FONTATTRIBUTEentity is missing from a FONTentity, the Web Intelligence Processing Server synthesizes the
font typeface from the specified regular typeface. Synthesized fonts will have lower quality than fonts explicitly
designed for non-regular typefaces.
6.6 Updating the online help system
Every time you open Web Intelligence Rich Client, and regardless of which work mode you are in, the help that
appears when you click the Helpicon is that which is installed on your local computer. If the local version of Web
Intelligence Rich Client is different from the BI launch pad version and the version of the Web Intelligence HTML
and Applet interfaces on the BI launch pad, then the Web Intelligence Rich Client help will not correspond with the
help of the interfaces accessed in the BI launch pad.
To update the Web Intelligence Rich Client interface and its help, you need to re-install this interface from the
latest SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform CD or from the BI launch pad preferences.
