President’s Letter 2013-2013 Officers, Board of Directors, & StaffDear SCACS Members!

Welcome all. Hope you’re having a good fall. Before we all know, winter will be upon us.

Everyone has been busy since our last newslet-ter including your association. The Planning Conference was a big success with more than 70 members stepping up and taking a leadership role for our new year. I hope you will take the time to check out the highlights from the Planning Confer-ence are on page nine. You will also find a recap of our committees’ 2014 goals and objectives for next year. If you weren’t able to attend the Plan-ning Conference but are still interested in partici-pating on a committee, let Leigh or Hannah (call them at 803-419-0804) know and they will get you “plugged in.” It’s never too late for you to help us and for you to benefit from your SCACS member-ship.

SCACS’s New Year starts on November 1st, and we are in the process of gearing up for another great year. As you have probably (hopefully) seen, the membership renewals have been sent. We need you back on the SCACS team and as a lead-er of this industry. The focus for 2014 is the “Feel the Need…the Need to Lead.” Your membership alone puts you ahead of many in this industry; now we need and want you to participate in as many events throughout the year as possible. New programs for 2014 for SCACS include a SCACS Connection (mentoring) Program and new video promotions; see more on page 10.

Please add the dates outlined on page 7 to your 2014 calendar(s).

Thank you again for being a part of our associa-tion and supporting our industry, and thank you in advance for your membership renewal. As your president, I’m honored to serve you and love to hear any feedback you may have regarding SCACS.

SCACS Member Programs:

Automotive Purchasing -- As a SCACS member, you can enjoy the hassle-free benefit of purchasing a vehicle for your family or your busi-ness at “invoice” and still enjoy all available rebates.

Your SCACS Contact: Brian Risner Fleet & Commercial Sales Manager Office: 803-399-9106 Cell: 803-543-1016 E-mail: [email protected]

Free HR Consulting -- Almost every business, regardless of size, will experience conflict in the employer-employee relationship at some point. This can present a challenge to small businesses owners, who often do not have the knowledge or expertise regarding which federal and state regulations may apply or the experience as to how to proceed.

Sloan Montgomery is a Human Resources Con-sulting Firm working with more than 500 small and medium sized organizations in the Carolinas and Georgia since 1946. The sole focus of the firm is providing assistance to employers in complying with federal and state regulations concerning em-ployment and pay practices. Members of SCACS can call for free advice because the association pays the retainer. Use your membership; call with your questions.

Insurance discount pricing -- Federated Insurance Offers Health Reform Soution for Small Employers

Federated Insurance, your association’s recommended insurance carrier, has recently developed a strategy for small employer ac-counts (50 or fewer employees) to change their plan year and renew their coverage on December 1, 2013, deferring the impact of many portions of the ACA until December 1, 2014 versus January 1, 2014. Each Federat-ed client will have the option to either change their plan year to 12/1/13 or remain on their current plan year. Electing to change their plan year to begin on December 1, 2013 will allow employers to take advantage of lower premium rates, retaining their current plan design, and possibly delaying the application of non-discrimination rules.

If you are not currently a Federated Insur-ance client, please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to explore your associa-tion’s recommended group health program. Federated has been a loyal supporter of our association and a trusted business partner to many of our members for years. They are here to offer you the professional counsel and innovative services that will help you navigate these uncertain times. If you are a Federated Insurance client, please expect to hear from your local Federated Insurance Marketing Representative regarding this and other health care reform solutions.

Millions of dollars in tax credits go unclaimed each year by compa-nies that qualify to claim credits

but do not to file the appropriate paperwork. In the C-Store industry, the work opportunity tax credit (“WOTC”) is a particularly lucrative tax credit that tends to be missed. WOTC is a credit for employers that hire qualified individuals. Qualifying individuals are hired on a regular basis by C-Store companies, yet many companies do not bother to screen new hires for WOTC. In effect, these companies lose up to $2,400 every time a qualified person is hired.

Qualifying individuals for WOTC are people that fall into one or more of these categories:• Member of a family receiving welfare • Qualifying Ex-Felons• Member of a family receiving SNAP (food stamps), and 18-39 years of age• Qualifying SSI recipients• Individuals who have received vocational rehabilitation • Qualifying individuals 18-39 years of age living in a federal zone• Qualified low-income veterans• Unemployed veterans• Recently discharged veterans with a service- connected disability• Disconnected youth (youths up to 25 years of age lack-ing sufficient education/skills)• Qualified summer youths

For an employer to claim WOTC, the qualifying new hire must sign a completed IRS form 8850, indicat-ing that they were screened for WOTC on or before the day they were offered a job. Then, the taxpayer must get the new hire certified by the state WOTC office.

To help SCACS members with this process, SCACS has partnered with Outlaw Consulting, a tax credit consulting firm, to offer the SCACS Tax Credit Ser-vice. Under this service offering, Outlaw Consulting will help manage this process and make sure you get the credit you deserve. They can also make sure you are claiming other credits that might apply, including the Renewal Community Tax Credit, the Empowerment Zone Tax Credit, the Georgia Re-training Tax Credit, and the South Carolina Job Tax Credit. Contact the SCACS office at (803) 419-0804 or Outlaw Consulting at (770) 461-2308 to find out more about this program.

2013 SCACS Planning Conference Wrap-UpSCACS leaders at work, more than 70 attended;Goals set for 2014.

The recent Planning Conference set the tone for SCACS’ New Year starting with a move to the historic city of Charleston. Activities be-gan with a social hour of networking before boarding a bus headed to Mt. Pleasant to depart on a dinner cruise around the Charleston harbor.

Bright and early the next morning, more than 70 members enjoyed listening and learning from Head Football Coach Jamey Chadwell, from Charleston Southern University. He talked about the lead-ership roles in our life . . . there are more of them than we often recognize. After that motiviation, committees met for two hours and developed goals and objectives for moving the association forward in 2014.

We believe this enthusiastic group of leaders and successful meeting will no doubt produce be a superior year of membership, attendance and participation. Many of our traditional programs will be returning in 2014 such as Retail Day at the Statehouse, the annual, family-friendly convention and educational programs. One new program for 2014 is the SCACS Connection Program; this is a mentoring program, pairing a new member with a veteran member. If you would like to participate, contact staff and they will set up with a new member. Your responsibilities will be calling the new member to welcome him or her and introduce yourself and personally invite him/her to various SCACS events. Also new for 2014 is the plan to create promotional videos featuring supplier members and retailer members sharing “why they belong to SCACS.”

Stay tuned and mark your calendars now for many of the events that are already planned. (See a calendar of events on page 7).

Thank to the following sponsors of the Planning Conference; it produced a great group of volunteer leaders! Thank you to Carolina Distributors, Federated Insurance, Frito-Lay, Lee Distributors, MillerCoors, Pepsi Beverage Corporation, PET Diary, Southern Eagle, Swedish Match and Terry Environmental.
