What’s Jewish About American Music? (Find out on December 6!)

Jewish music has always been a hard term to define. What qualifies and how can we define it? Is it music written by Jewish composers? Is it music written only for Jewish prayer or ritual? Is it music written only in Hebrew, Yiddish or Ladino? What about music composed by Israelis or in the State of Israel?

Nonetheless, music has always been an important part of the cultural expres-sion of Jews and in the various lands we have lived, we have internalized the sounds of the surrounding society and brought them into our Jewish practice. At the same time, we have injected our Jewish traditions (including our own musi-cal ideas) into the mainstream of the surrounding culture. On the one hand,

the music we use in our synagogues often parallels the music that is heard in American churches at a given moment. And on the other, foods like bagels and lox or (kosher) deli sandwiches are well known as American fare. Perhaps December is a month we feel these dual realities quite poignantly: Chanukah decorations and presents are for sale in popular chain stores and some of the most beloved Christmas melodies in America were written by Jewish composers.

Similarly, the unofficial canon known as the American Songbook reflects the influence of Jewish songwriters and performers. Composers like Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and George Gershwin made vast contributions to this body of song as they wrote melodies that entered our minds but stayed in our hearts. On Friday night, December 6, Jazz without Borders (a group that includes 2 of our regular Shir Shabbat musicians!) will join us to explore the American Songbook, to perform its melodies and to think about why it might have mattered (or not) that the composers were Jew-ish.

As they describe themselves: Jazz Without Borders is a product of the vibrant and multicultural New York jazz scene, where Israeli born musicians have had a strong presence in recent decades. Co-lead by saxophonist Nir Naaman & drummer Nadav Snir-Zelniker and joined by pianist Eldad Zvulun and bassist Daniel Ori, all band members are active and in-demand musicians on the sce-ne. The group is set to explore the common grounds of jazz traditions, Jewish and Israeli music. With concerts and workshops all over the tristate area, the group brings a dynamic event, both entertaining and educational, to a wide variety of audiences.

You will not want to miss this particular Shabbat filled with an extra measure of warmth and American Jewish music. I hope you can join us here!

Happy Chanukah,

Cantor Becker

MAZEL TOV!

Mazel Tov to Ellen Plum Rosenberg

for her nomination to the North American Board of the Union for Reform Judaism. Ellen's election will be confirmed at the URJ Biennial Convention in December.

Shabbat Service and Bar Mitzvah of Aron Tucker Saturday, December 7, 10:30 a.m. Aron is an 8th grader at the Masters School. Outside of school he likes to act. He is currently working on a part in Les Miserables. He loves history and read-ing books on history and geography. He also likes to go on hikes and experi-ence nature.

Shabbat Service and Bat Mitzvah of Meghan Fenichel Saturday, December 21, 10:30 a.m. Meghan Fenichel is an 8th grader at Woodlands Middle/High School. She likes to dance at Miss Andrea’s Dance Studio, and her favorite dance styles are tap and lyrical, but she also does ballet, jazz, acro, and hip hop. She plays tennis for her school where she likes all of her subjects pretty much the same. She enjoys gym class, though, because it is a break from all of the work and she likes to move around. She is a high honors student. Some school extracurricu-lar activities that she does are Band, where she plays the clarinet and is learn-

ing alto saxophone, Knitting Club, and National Junior Honor Society.

A memorable experience for her was her birthday party last year, as she had not had one in quite a while. She had a sleepover at the Westchester Marriott, since it had a pool and the wanted to swim even though it was winter. All of her closest friends came and stayed over, and the hotel decorated the room with streamers and balloons. She can’t wait for this year’s party, as it will be even more memorable!

Meghan volunteers quite a bit. She does some hours at the Greenburgh Public Library, where she decorates and help out for events and kids’ programs. She also has been participating with the food delivery with the Bronx Jewish Community Council for Passover and Chanukah with her family for the past few years. At her dance studio, she assists with classes for little kids. At her school's Builders Club (middle school Key Club), they create donation bins for organizations, make flyers. It is important to take advantage of your surroundings!

Dinner Discussion Featuring FASPE

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13

Brotherhood is proud to sponsor a truly relevant and historically significant Shabbat Dinner Discus-sion on the work of FASPE, Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics. The discussion

will feature David Goldman and Thorsten Wagner, respectively the founder and executive director of FASPE. 6:00 P.M. Catered Dinner: Pricing has been reduced this year to $18/person for Brotherhood & Women of SSTTE members; $25/person for everyone else.

RSVP: [email protected] 6:45 P.M. Talk followed by Q&A 8:00 P.M. Chavurah Service

The following is from the FASPE website. FASPE presents a unique historical lens to study contemporary ethics in the professions. Prior to World War II, German professionals were highly regarded internationally. In many re-spects, they set a standard for a quality of practice and for independence from state and political influence. Yet, leaders and practitioners in each of the professions became intimately involved in designing, enabling and executing the crimes of Nazi Germany. FASPE studies the perpetrators to display the power and role of professionals, to ask the basic questions of how and why profes-sionals abandon their ethical guideposts and to create a compelling context for the study of con-temporary ethical issues.

Please do not miss this meaningful and thought provoking discussion which is unfor-tunately as relevant today as ever, given the recent historic rise of anti-Semitism both here and abroad.

Brotherhood looks forward to sharing this special Shabbat Dinner, Discussion and Chavurah ser-vice with all of you!

ARZA

WE STAND DIVIDED: THE RIFT BETWEEN AMERICAN JEWS AND ISRAEL

More about the Book by Daniel Gordis 12 Amazon readers each gave the book 5 stars. Following are quotes from their reviews.

“We stand divided” is a short book, but it is tremendously important. It describes the ever increas-ing rift between the two largest Jewish communities, America and Israel, its causes and suggests how to, at least, try to solve it….I don’t say this about many books, but I will say it in this case: if the future of the Jewish people is important to you, reading “We stand divided” is a must!

As an American cultural Jew married to an Israeli, I must say that Gordis’ book opened my eyes to the historic and contemporary issues facing us. This book is superbly written, with a clear and con-cise theme that if we do no work to accept each other’s differences we will sink like prior Jewish eras. The choice is ours.

If any Scarsdale Synagogue member reads the book and cares to, please send your comments to Gloria Lewit at [email protected]. Possibly a good Chanukah gift.

ARZA, THE ASSOCIATION OF REFORM ZIONIST OF AMERICA, IS THE OFFICIAL LINK BETWEEN THE AMERICAN REFORM MOVEMENT AND ISRAEL. ARZA CHAMPIONS ACTIVITIES THAT EN-HANCE ISRAEL AS A PLURALISTIC, JUST AND DEMOCRATIV JEWISH STATE. A PORTION OF YOUR ARZA DUES SUPPORTS THE ISRAEL RELIGIOUSC ACTION CENTER—IRAC.

...BUT WHY LATKES? With the holiday of Chanukah coming up soon (we light the first candle on December 22) I am sharing this interesting (there is a beheading - OY!) article by Tina Wasserman (acclaimed chef and author) about latkes and their introduction to modern Chanukah celebrations. Enjoy and Happy Chanukah to all!

Our Ancestors Didn't Know from Latkes

On Hanukkah we traditionally serve holiday dishes cooked in oil to commemorate the miracle of a single vial of oil lasting eight days. But oil as the Hanukkah food of choice was not always so. One thousand years ago, in the warmer climates of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa, the Hanukkah specialty dish was a cheese latke (pancake), which commemorated Judith's heroic efforts to save her people during the second century B.C.E. As the story (told in the Apocrypha) goes, the Syrian General Holofernes was sent to Bethulia (due east of Caesarea) by King Nebuchadnesser to annihilate the Jews. To make him thirsty, the beautiful Judith fed him salty cheese, followed by wine. The more he ate, the thirstier he became-and the more wine he drank. When the general passed out, Judith be-headed him, and his troops fled in fear. Thus did Oriental Jews come to associate cheese pancakes with the Maccabean victory of their ancestors. In Eastern Europe, where the climate was considerably colder, Jews did not have easy access to dairy products, so for Hanukkah celebrations they turned to the foods at hand. Raising geese was a Jewish occupation at the time, and in December fattened geese provided meat and fat for cook-ing. Potatoes, too, were readily available and cheap-and that is how a crisp, golden potato galette cooked in goose fat became a Hanukkah favorite. In Amsterdam in the late 16th century, stewed vegetables became the Hanukkah dish of choice in commemoration of the Dutch military victory over the invading Spanish army. At dinner time on October 3, 1574 the Dutch launched a surprise attack on the Spanish military encampment in Ley-den, forcing the Spaniards to flee-and abandon simmering pots of stewed vegetables with meat. Associating the siege of Leyden with the Hasmonean victory, Dutch Jews established the tradition of serving a mashed stew of vegetables with kielbasa on Hanukkah.

Whichever foods you choose to enjoy in celebration of Chanukah, eat in good health!

MAZEL TOTS

November flew by! The children have been so busy getting ready for the winter. They have been learning about their environment and all the changes winter brings. We’ve been talking about animals and the changes to their routines due to the changes in season. We have noted changes in the trees and grass, and we’ve talked about the preparations in our own homes for colder weather. Another season of growth!

We’re also excited about the upcoming Chanukah celebrations and we’re learning all about the history and traditions of the holiday. Our month ends with a school-wide Chanukah Party. There will be so many fun things to do, delicious things to eat, great songs to sing and loving family to share it with.

Our January 2’s and Spring Toddler Programs for the 2019-20 school year begin on January 6th. We’re looking forward to getting to know new friends and welcoming back some of our Fall Tod-dlers. Just as we offer the children in our 2’s, 3’s and 4’s, the children in these programs have a wonderful and developmentally appropriate curriculum. They also meet with our fantastic special-ists including Movement, Sports & Games, Music, Yoga, Art and so much more!

If you have not yet seen our school and are interested in a space for the 2020-21 school year, please contact us to schedule a visit.

If you have any questions about any of our Mazel Tots programs, please feel free to call us at

914-723-3001.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

CARE2CONNECT

Our Care2Connect committee has one main goal – to reach out and support fellow congregants throughout various lifecycle events. New volunteers are always welcome! There are no meetings to attend or events to schedule on your calendar. Just let us know what you are interested in do-ing, how often you are available and the best way to reach you. Then, when a need arises that you are comfortable with, our committee will be in touch. Whether you can help out once a month or once a year, it all adds up to a more supportive and caring temple community! Tikkun Olam Together.

Other services our networks of member volunteers provide include:

Providing/Delivering Meals to homebound members or families during a health crisis; Checking in via telephone with the ill, elderly and/or homebound; Visiting an ill or homebound member; Transportation to a doctor's appointment for an ill or non-driving member; Hosting a single or widowed member for a holiday meal; Transportation to services (when available) for an elderly or non-driving member.

If you know...of a Synagogue member who is ill or in the hospital, call the office and let us know. This way the Rabbi and Cantor can visit and Care2Connect can provide timely support. Don’t assume that we know---we will only know if you tell us!

For more information, to volunteer or to let us know of a Congregant who could use our support, please contact Rabbi Brown, Cantor Becker or the Temple Office.
