NTU is an internationally reputed research-intensive tertiary institution and provides a broad-based education covering science and technology, business and the arts, entrepreneurial and leadership skills to prepare students for the global working world.

SCE has produced the top earning graduates in NTU for the last 2 consecutive years, based on Singapore’s Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Graduate Employment Survey (GES). SCE’s 2011 Computer Engineering graduates took home an average monthly pay of $3,577 while SCE’s Computer Science graduates came in a close 3rd with a mean pay of $3,425. The GES survey is released annually by the Ministry of Education and publishes results of the key employment indicators to provide prospective students with timely and comparable data.

SCE programmes combine a distinctive blend of theory and practice with critical hands-on-experience, and project-based learning. Communication and professional skills are enhanced through carefully selected industrial internships which complement the programme, ensuring our students are ready to meet goals and rise to challenges as part of a global workforce. In addition, overseas exchanges under our Global Immersion Programme with international prestigious universities are encouraged.

Career prospects for our graduates received a boost with the government’s Intelligent Nation Masterplan (iN2015). This initiative aims to harness the Infocomm industry in ways that will enhance and grow Singapore’s economy in new areas. With the government investing over a few hundred million dollars in the local Infocomm industry, students can look forward to the surge in demand for quality graduates.

CURRICULUMOVERVIEW

STRONG FOUNDATION IN DESIGN AND THEORY

The School of Computer Engineering offers two direct honours undergraduate programmes - Computer Engineering (CE) and Computer Science (CS). Students will be awarded the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree upon completion of their four-year programme. Those who excel in their first year may be invited to join the Accelerated Bachelor’s Programme (ABP), completing the programme in three and a half years.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING (CE)

The programme is a distinctive fusion of computer engineering and electronic engineering. Our computer engineering graduates are trained in electronic engineering, software design and hardware-software integration instead of only focusing on software engineering or electronic engineering. The areas of specialisation include Digital Media Embedded Systems, High Performance Computing, and Networking and Mobility.

CURRICULUMOVERVIEW

COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS)

The course provides a more focused study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation, as well as practical techniques for their implementation and application in large scale software systems. The areas of specalisation include Digital Media, High Performance Computing, Information Systems, and Intelligent Systems.

KEY DIFFERENCES

The first year courses are common for CE and CS and there are also some shared topics in the higher years such as Operating Systems, Software Engineering, Object Oriented Design and Programming. The differences between the courses can be seen in the emphasis placed at algorithmic and conceptual levels. The CS programme does not cover circuits and basic electronics, digital communications and the like. The curriculum instead focuses more on software design and construction.

The key difference between SCE’s Computer Science degree and a typical Computer Science degree is the focus on practice-oriented training with applications of computer science foundations. This is evident in the mandatory industrial orientation, multidisciplinary design project, and capstone project in the final year, and as well as several other mini-projects throughout the course.

Students have the option to pursue general education subjects as electives, as well as in-depth studies in their chosen field, providing a well-rounded education. Integrating theory and training, these programmes are complemented by coursework including group and individual project work. Students will also have the opportunity to pursue a 10-week Industrial Orientation (IO) or 20-week Industrial Attachment (IA) in their third year of study.

MoneyChase is a computer game designed using Unity3D, to motivate children and teenagers to increase their interest in personal financial literacy and promote efficient management of their personal finances.

To appeal to these particular groups, the game adopts the popular board game format, e.g. Monopoly, of a virtual world which closely simulates real-life situations which gives rise to financial opportunities.

Literature from psychology and health sciences has long argued that goal-setting is an effective strategy for changing behaviour. As the field of persuasive technology is focused on developing computing systems that attempt to change attitudes and behavior, the aforementioned findings from the literature suggest that employing goal-setting in persuasive technologies might be an effective means of supporting behaviour change.

Several studies showed that financial literacy is positively related to self-beneficial financial behaviour. While financial behaviour seems to be positively affected by financial literacy, the effects of various forms of financial education on financial behavior are less certain.

As part of the research agenda, persuasive technologies that encourage individuals to start managing their finances are being developed. Specifically, the developed system attempts to encourage participation in regular and varied financial activity. The focus of this research project is to develop and investigate a technology to support lifestyle behaviour change.

The computer game system, MoneyChase, was designed based on theory as well as findings from recent empirical investigations that have used technology to encourage healthy behaviour change.

MONEY CHASE 02

A set of Android-based Apps specifically designed for Epileptic Patients and Doctors. Epileptic Seizures are often referred to as Fits; causing tonic or clonic movements, convulsions and other forms of psychic symptoms.

With Kenneth’s App, Patients are able to log data of their symptoms up to a server. Doctors then retrieve this information and are able to monitor their Patient’s condition virtually, in real time.

THE ILLNESS TRACKER 01

The Android Phone Based RC Helicopter is a remote control application developed using Android OS. This remote control application will allow the user to control the rotors speed and directions of a RC Helicopter.

The application also makes use of the phone’s accelerometer sensors to control the direction of the RC Helicopter.

The Android mobile phone interacts with the RC Helicopter remote controller via Bluetooth to send instructions to the microcontroller and subsequently the microcontroller will perform the appropriate actions based on the instruction it receives. This implementation does not require any removal of existing circuitries from the RC Helicopter.

MOBILE BASED RC HELICOPTER 03

Inspired by the “Mindstorms” Sudoku Solver, the group created a two player game based on the original Hangman game. The tools of this game however is a Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 robot, two Bluetooth enabled laptops, a pen and a piece of paper. Mindstorms HangMan is a robot which is able to write alphabets via remote control with a laptop.

The game starts off with the Mindstorms Robot randomising a word from its word bank. The players then take turns to select a letter on their laptop; those that have already been used will be marked. Displayed on each laptop screen are 26 alphabets, a panel and a scoreboard. For every letter selected,

data will be sent via Bluetooth and the robot will then verify if the letter is part of the chosen word. If the letter selected is correct, the Mindstorms robot will physically write out the alphabet within the given space on the paper. With each incorrect entry, the robot will then start drawing out a portion of the hangman. The winner is determined when a full hangman is drawn out; otherwise, the player which guesses the word in full wins the game. If it is a wrong answer, the player immediately loses, regardless of the number of tries he has left. The Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is controlled by a command code written by the group, using LeJOS NXJ, a sophisticated open source java based language.

NANYANG BUSINESS SCHOOL (NBS) AND SCHOOL OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING (SCE)

Students will be trained in the fundamentals and the combined application of both fields – engineering and business. The programmes consist of a well-integrated and thorough curriculum merging business and computer engineering or computer science courses. You will be introduced to the basics and the combined application of each field, in key industries such as financial services, engineering, consultancies, manufacturing, telecommunications, tourism and retail. At the end of four years, students will earn two degrees – Bachelor of Business (Information Technology) and Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering or Computer Science).

NTU-GEORGIA TECH INTEGRATED PROGRAMME IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING OR COMPUTER SCIENCE

Supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) have collaborated on an integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering or Computer Science) and Master of Science (Computer Science) programme. Students will spend three years in SCE, building a strong foundation in computing and the next one to one-and-a-half years at Georgia Tech’s College of Computing, reading graduate-level subjects and conducting in-depth study of their chosen specialisations.

ACCREDITATION AND SCHOLARSHIP

SCE’s BEng Computer Engineering and Computer Science programmes are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board, through the Institute of Engineers, Singapore (IES).

IES is the Singapore signatory to the Washington Accord, an international agreement which provides a mechanism for mutual recognition of the substantial equivalence of engineering academic programmes in satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering at the professional level. The Washington Accord is an agreement between the bodies responsible for accrediting professional engineering degree programmes in each of the signatory countries. It recognises the substantial equivalency of programmes accredited by those bodies and recommends that graduates of accredited programmes in any of the signatory countries be recognised by the other countries as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. The Washington Accord was signed in 1989.

IDA’S NATIONAL INFOCOMM SCHOLARSHIP

Students admitted into the School of SCE are eligible to apply for IDA’s National Infocomm Scholarship. The National Infocomm Scholarship is sponsored by Infocomm companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, DBS, SingTel and StarHub. Students can look forward to internships with their sponsoring companies and the opportunities to work in the companies when they graduate.
