Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time– August 20, 2017

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

-Fr. William Dotson

Las Posadas

Each year, a Las Posadas procession takes place along Main Street. Las Posadas is a Hispanic custom wherein people reenact Mary and Joseph seeking shelter at the inn. This candlelit procession is a com-munity event, bringing together various churches and groups in St. Charles for a beautiful public witness of the faith. This year, the procession is on Dec 2 at 6:30pm. The organizers have contacted us asking for help from our parishioners. They are looking for a few children to dress as angels and shepherds. They are also looking for people to help with crowd control and to sell candles. If you are interested in helping, please contact Fr. Dotson.

Solar Eclipse

This week Monday is a total solar eclipse. This amazing natural event reminds us of the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. It also reminds us that sci-ence and faith are not opposed to each other. Science tells us the facts of this event. Faith helps us see how the beauty of the eclipse reveals to us part of the beau-ty of God. The more we learn about creation, the better we can understand the Creator.

Cardinal Glennon /SSM Health Update

We received a letter from SSM Health Vice President Sandy Koller and Archbishop Robert J. Carlson thanking our parish for their donations

amounting to $2513.00, which they received on August 3, 2017.

These monies help provide charity care for those less fortunate in our community. Thank you for all the prayers and support given to this ap-peal.

Eclipse Solar

St . Char les Borromeo Help-A-Student Program Parents have the hardest job in the world and young parents in our parish need our loving support more than ever before. Besides struggling to provide the material needs of their children, they are dedicated to handing on their rich herit-age of the Catholic faith. To provide financial assistance for those parents who cannot afford the full cost of tuition in our school, we appeal to you, their parish family members to consider a contribution through our parish Help-A-Student program. When you sup-port this program, you are giving youngsters a chance to strengthen their faith in God and prepare them for their future. We maintain complete confidentiality when receiving and distributing financial aid for your Help-A-Student Pro-gram. Parents willing to support the standards and requirements of the school and participate in parish and school projects and activities, will be helped to give their children excellent academic and religious education available in St. Charles Borro-meo School. Won’t you please consider a gift today, perhaps in memory of a loved one, or in gratitude for the many blessings in your life? You generosity is deeply appreciated. Our Saint of the Week– Pope Pius X– Feast Day– August 21

On June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto saw the light of earth at Riesi, Province of Treviso, in Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the two hundred fifty-ninth pope was canonized St. Pius X. Two of the most outstanding accomplishments of this saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renew-al and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwavering war against the heresyand evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His over-riding concern was to renew all things in Christ. Above all, his holiness shone forth conspicuously. From St. Pius X we learn again that "the folly of the Cross", simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indis-pensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness. His last will and testament bears the striking sentence: "I was born poor, I have lived in pov-erty, and I wish to die poor." His feast day is August 21. Courtesy of Catholic Online– Angels and Saint

Renowned Scripture scholar and author, Dr. Tim Gray, provides a fascinating explanation of the importance of the visible Church and the centrality of God on Earth. He offers incredible insights that make clear the role of the Church, as an essential part of God’s plan for salvation, which are sure to help those who have left her, or who mistakenly claim to be “spiritual, but not religious”. Prayerfully, consider purchasing this CD on the value of human life. They are in the Narthex for a minimum donation of $4.00. There will be more topics and CDs available in the upcoming weeks. These CDs are from the Augustine Insti-tute. If you write a check, make it our to our Parish. Thanks for your interest now and in the coming weeks.

Scrip Cards– Grocery Shopping happens every week, so

we always keep a full stock of cards for various stores to

feed the family. We carry Dierberg’s, Shop-n-Save, Mid-

Towne Market and Frontier IGA. By just buying the

cards to purchase food for your family, our school can

benefit in a HUGE way. Please consider supporting our

school by purchasing your grocery cards through us.

PRAY-ERS NEEDED Come lessen your load and feel refreshed. Spend time in

Eucharistic Adoration the 3rd Monday of every month.

Don’t know what Eucharistic Adoration is? or what to

do? Please contact Carol Pappas 636-928-6722 or

[email protected]. so we can keep our list up-to-

date.

Prayer Books If anyone is looking to purchase the small prayer books that are present in every pew of our church, we have copies of them in the church office. Call Mary DuBois at 636-946-1893 and she will set one aside for you. The cost per pray-er book is only $5.00, and they would be a big help to any child struggling to learn their prayers, or even for an adult, who was needing to brush up on their prayers. They are small enough to fit in a ladies purse or would make a nice gift if you were going to visit someone in the hospital.

St. Charles Borromeo Memorial Gift Cards

We have available in our Narthex, church office, and at our local funeral homes, Memorial Gift Cards. You can designate your gift to our Capital Improve-ment Fund, SCB School’s Help-A-Student Tuition Aid, SCB St. Vincent DePaul Society, or any other SCB program or project. When you are making arrangements for the fu-neral and visitation, you may ask your funeral direc-tor to set these cards out. Or, when you are going to the visitation, you may pick up a card in the box in our Narthex. I would bet many of our beloved Borromeo mem-bers who pass on would love to have their Memorial Gifts given to SCB Parish because they (and we all) are so proud of our wonderful Parish Family here.

An Invitation to Nocturnal Adoration

Did you know that in addition to Eucharistic Adoration on the third Monday of every month, our par-ish offers Nocturnal Adoration on the third Saturday night each month? Nocturnal Adoration is a tradi-tion that began in Rome more than 200 years ago and continues today in countries around the world. Borromeo parishioners who loved participating in Nocturnal Adoration throughout their childhood in Mexico have established the first Nocturnal Adoration Society in Missouri right here at Borromeo. All parishioners—men, women, and children—are invited to participate each month.

The next Nocturnal Adoration is Saturday, September 16. All participants should meet in the café at 7pm. After opening prayers, the group will go upstairs for silent prayer, followed by prayers in Spanish and English. At approximately 8:30pm a short period of silent prayer will end the first part of Nocturnal Adora-tion, and most participants will leave. However, a group of men will remain throughout the night, taking turns praying for an hour in church and then resting in the café.

If you would like to join the group of men who stay throughout the night, please contact Manuel Guerrero at 636-352-5898 or manyguerrero,[email protected].

Today we move ahead in our reading of Mat-thew’s Gospel. Last week we read about Jesus walking on the water and the disciples’ confession of faith that Jesus is the Son of God. If we were reading Matthew’s entire Gospel, we would have read about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees about Jewish purity laws. Jesus argues that it is not what goes into us that makes us unclean; he is referring to the strict Jewish dietary rules. Instead our words and our actions—what comes out of us—make us unclean because they emerge from a heart that is un-clean.

Knowing about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees helps us to understand today’s Gospel. In fact the story heightens the surprise and shock we feel as we hear Je-sus’ exchange with the Canaanite woman. The woman, who is not Jewish, approaches Jesus, requesting that he heal her demon-possessed daughter. At first Jesus ig-nores her; he says nothing. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away, and Jesus agrees, remarking that he was sent to minister to the Jews alone.

The woman persists, paying homage to Jesus, and yet Jesus denies her request again. He even insults her, using a Jewish word of derision for Gentiles, “dog.” But the woman cleverly turns Jesus’ insult into an affir-mation of faith. Only then does Jesus grant her request and heal her daughter.

Jesus’ unresponsiveness to this woman may strike us as uncharacteristic or shocking. Yet in Mat-thew’s Gospel, Jesus’ ministry is directed primarily to the people of Israel. At only a very few points, such as the one found in today’s Gospel, do we find Jesus antici-pating the later Christian ministry to the rest of the world.

Continued….next column.

Continued from previous column…..

Behind Matthew’s text we can hear this early Christian community’s struggle to understand how God’s selec-tion of Israel is consistent with two events: Israel’s re-jection of Jesus and the Gentiles’ acceptance of Jesus. Just as Jesus was surprised by the faith expressed by the Canaanite woman, so too the first Christians were sur-prised that the Gentiles would receive the salvation God offered through Christ. In today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we hear the apostle Paul considering this same concern.

The faith that the Canaanite woman expresses is an af-firmation of and confidence in God’s abundant mercy. Yes, salvation comes through Israel, but it overflows for the benefit of all.

--Thomas Fuller
