The meeting was called to order at 7:32 p.m. All members of the Board were present except Madison Smith. Guests included all campus ad- ministrators, Father Eddie Winkler, Heidi Beasley, Barbra Clanton, Rus- sell Roark, Cornelia Hinze, Jeanette Volkmer, Carol Hoy Dromgoole, Irene Mader, Jessie Banks, Rebecca Erekson, Jennifer Korenek, Peggy Waller, Betty Janish, Kathryn Fudge, Ray Sykowski, A.D. Fudge, Robbie Rhodes, Ron Peroni, Obie Rhodes and Verlin Argo. There were no comments or ad- dresses given from the public and no communications read. Ms. Milentz reminded Board members they needed to register for the Texas Association of School Boards Summer Leadership Confer- ence. The Board received letters of thanks for secretary's day gifts from Susan Engtsrom, Connie Cranek, Ida Haines and Kathy Ricks. Betty Schiurring and Joe Lee Per- ez were administered the Oath of Of- fice. Reorganization of the Board in- cludes: Perez, president; Tanya Wiese, vice president; and, Schuirring, sec- retary. Perez presented Milentz with a plaque for her service as president of the Board. The minutes from the April 8, April 26 and May 6 meetings were approved with corrections. The Revenue and Expenses Report was also approved after being re- viewed by all members. Campus reports were heard from Veronica Curry, Eric Grogan, Don Wild, Michael Lanier, Dr. Cynthia Saha and Mollie Walker. The Board approved the motion to adopt the JR3 Education Associates Teacher and Retire/Rehire Program as presented by Mr. Clanton of JR3. This program will allow teachers who meet the Rule of 80 to retire from the District and receive TRS benefits. They may then be rehired by the third party JR3 and be placed in public schools as teachers receiving full sala- ries. This is being done to help fill critical needs areas and keep success- ful teachers in the classroom. The Board approved the MCU bid of the T-l line to Rice High School (RHS) from CDW-G for $31,995.39. This was presented by Ralph Gertson the district's technology director. He explained how this will allow distance education and multiple campus com- Newsbriefs munications via computers and audio visual equipment already in place. After discussion, the Board voted to reject all proposals for custodial services for the District. It was de- cided to hire school employees to take over the duties of the entire district as presented by Bill Hefner. The Board accepted the bid of $24,419.63 as presented by Hefner for security cameras from Monarch Se- curity. These will replace the outdated existing cameras at RHS. Members discussed the bids re- ceived for canopies covering the walkways at Eagle Lake Middle School. Final arrangements of where the canopies would be placed were approved. No action was taken on the bids. The Board approved the highest bid for miscellaneous equipment in the District as presented by Hefner. This is done every year to sell off equipment that is no longer needed. The Board reviewed the budget and approved the amendments as pre- sented by Hefner, the district's finan- cial administrator. Members heard an update of the 2002-03 TRS Active Care program, the new insurance provided by the state. The state will be contributing $83.33 monthly to each employee in the form of Choice. This means the employee may take it in the form of a paycheck or put it towards their in- surance premiums. Additional fund- ing includes another $75 by the state and a minimum of $150 by the dis- trict. A total of $308 will be given to each district employee to help defray the costs of insurance. The Board approved an amount of $150 to be the District's health insur- ance contribution per employee per month. Members heard a report by Dr. Richard Gott and Jennifer Korenek concerning the cafeteria. Gott in- formed the Board that he had sur- veyed the student council. He com- mended Ms. Korenek for her wonder- ful job she is doing being in charge of all food services. She then in- formed the Board there were guide- lines that must be followed and, in do- ing so, is trying to cut back on frying foods and using fat. The USDA web site listed the guidelines and she has developed a monthly menu that is nu- tritious for the students and meets the guidelines. She said she is continu- ing to work on improving the menu. Board members approved the RHS exam schedule. Gott presented the Board with the new three-level student and parent complaint forms. Families are able to review student applications and select the student they feel will best match their family and provide a bed, meals, and a caring environment. Columbus youth football sign-up is June 22, July 6 Football sign up is set for Saturday, June 22, and Saturday, July 6, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Beason's Park in Columbus.     ans a free guide to help care for their yard and the environment. A Green Guide to Yard Care shows homeowners a simple four-step method called Yard Wise to help them maintain a healthy yard with less costs, less work, and less waste. The guide includes information and tips on mowing, mulch- ing, composting, green landscape design and yard care.
