A Message from the PTA

Presidents

We think we can finally say it: spring is here! And with the sunshine and warmer days come so many school activities. Our PTA volunteers are working on the annu-al Tag Sale, Bike/Walk to School Day, Teacher Appre-ciation Week, Pancake Breakfast and Fun Run, the annual Talent Show, Science Bee and Science Sum-mit, Field Day, Ice Cream Social and the farewell activi-ties for our graduating fifth graders. We are busy! If you would like to help out with any of these events, vol-unteer information can be found later in this issue. We know many Watchung parents would like to learn more about how our district is implementing the Com-mon Core State Standards (CCSS) and the PARCC test. Both the PTA and the School Action Team (SAT) are working to bring more information to you. The SAT sponsored a presentation by Supervisor for Profession-al Development Natalee Bartlett last week on the CCSS, which gave an overview of the goals for mathe-matics and language arts. Last Tuesday, we attended a PTA Council meeting during which Chief Academic Of-ficer Gail Clarke presented an overview of the PARCC test and the district’s new Director of Technology, Barry Haines, gave a brief presentation of the district’s two-year technology plan, which is vital given that the PARCC test must be taken on a computer or tablet. We can assure you that Barry is hitting the ground running and he plans to meet with the PTAs and SATs in the district soon to tell us what we can expect from the dis-trict in terms of new technology and also how the PTAs can best use funds raised for technology. If you would like to do any reading on either Common Core or PARCC, both Principal Schmidt and the SAT have provided information and useful links to websites in this issue of the newsletter as well as in past issues (available at www.watchungpta.org). In addition, the Na-tional PTA (www.pta.org) website has some great basic information for parents, including a New Jersey-specific guide to the Common Core)

1 as well as short overviews

of Common Core standards for each grade level. We hope everyone has a relaxing, fun-filled Spring Break (and remember, school is in session on Friday, April 25th!). Have a great month! – Jen and Melinda 1 www.pta.org/files/Advocacy/CCSSIToolkit/Common%20Core%20State%20Standards%20Resources/Assessments%20Resouces/PTA%5FNJ%5F6PG%5F10DEC13%5FFINAL%5FR.pdf

Common Core State Standards Update

With all of the talk lately regarding required shifts in classroom instruction to meet the rigor and demands of Common

Core State Standards, many parents might not realize how much of this has been common practice here at Watchung

for years. Below are a few of the things we have done, and continue to do, to meet the demands of the new CCSS:

Balancing informational and literary texts:

Increase the percent of nonfiction texts in our collections.

Motivate students through nonfiction book talks.

Teach strategies for accessing print and electronic nonfiction materials.

Teach reading skills specific to nonfiction material.

Knowledge in the disciplines:

Plan and teach content-specific topics.

Teach strategies for research skills and help students apply them directly to a project.

Staircase of complexity:

Review the current literature collection to determine the genres and complex texts that students will

need to use.

Teach students how to choose appropriate texts.

Ascertain students’ reading levels and use them with book selection and projects.

Expose students to more-rigorous text aligned to instruction.

Text-based answers:

Teach students how to select a source and evaluate possible bias.

Help students develop their critical-thinking skills.

Teach students how to support a claim or assertion by drawing on a selected text.

Writing from sources:

Get students accessing information, researching topics, and citing sources.

Guide students through the daily process of reading and writing.

Teach students how to use text references and evidence to support conclusions and opinions.

Academic vocabulary:

Provide access to resources with rich, engaging vocabulary.

Focus instruction on constantly building richer vocabularies.

Upcoming Assemblies

On Wednesday, April 30 the George Street Playhouse Educational

he learns his mother has been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. In part-

nership with ShapingNJ, this fun, upbeat musical comedy explores the

challenges of one family learning how to make healthy choices together

and celebrates how positive changes can occur with the power of love,

hard work and support.

On Thursday, May 22, History’s Alive: Lewis and Clark will be present-

ed by Patrick Garner, a local professional actor. He will mix history and

humor, science and motivation to instruct students in the value of histo-

ry, inspire them to study history and entertain them as they learn

from history. 9:30 a.m. K-2, 10:30 a.m. 3-5.

On Friday, May 30, students will be treated to a visit from Charles Liu, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of

A Truly Magical Night!

On March 22nd a sold out crowd of almost 1,000 watched as the world-famous Harlem Wizards took on the Montclair

Magic, a team of Watchung teachers, staff and parents (along with other educators in the district) in the Montclair High

School gymnasium. The Wizards kept everyone on the edge of their seats with their show-stopping slam dunks and hi-

larious half-court hijinks. The show was non-stop energy and laughs and the whole Watchung community had a

blast! The event raised over $16,000 to further enhance the technology magnet at Watchung School.

Relay for Life

Dear Watchung Families & Friends,

The Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society, is an overnight com-

munity celebration where individuals and teams camp out, picnic, dance, play

games and take turns circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds in the

fight against cancer. This year, it is taking place on Saturday, June 21st at

Brookdale Stadium.

The teachers and staff of Watchung School have participated for several years as the Watchung Warriors and this year

they have asked the parents and caregivers of Watchung to join them! We will have our own team that will participate

alongside the Watchung Warriors, we are the Watchung Wowzers.

Almost all of us have been touched by cancer in some way, so we've decided to make a difference. We hope you will

consider becoming a member of our Relay team. Haven’t you always wondered what goes on at Brookdale Park at 3

a.m.? Now's your chance to find out! If you aren’t able to walk with us, we hope you will consider making a donation.

Please visit our webpage at: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/watchungwowzers.

With gratitude, – Robbie & Jenny Lazarus

Don’t Forget About Box Tops!

Our “Montclair Magic” Box Tops Competition is underway and runs through May

2nd. Clip Box Tops and send in to your child’s homeroom teacher. The class

with the most Box Tops wins a party! Also, don’t forget to earn Box Tops for

Watchung through online shopping! Instead of going directly to the website you

plan to shop on, you can go to that site through the Box Tops Marketplace at

www.boxtops4education.com/marketplace/browsestores. And, yes, practically

every online store you can think of is here! You will need to set up an account on

the Box Tops website first, so that the Box Tops you earn with your purchases

will go to Watchung. This is quick and easy; you need only provide your name,

email address and the school you are supporting. Please consider taking a few

minutes to do this—and then shop for yourself and earn for Watchung!

Greenhouse Happenings

Spring is definitely in the air and we are in full swing mode in the greenhouse! As many of you know, the “Watchung

Courtyard” is also springing to life! Thanks to a wonderful group of parent volunteers, we are sprucing up the courtyard

and the children are so excited to get out there! Our new crop of volunteers is very energetic, creative and enthusiastic! A

special thanks to Colleen Martinez, Melody Kettle, Jamie Pfeifer, Lisa Granovsky, Sumi Pillai, Kimberly King and Mary

Moore for all of their help in organizing our projects and all of their hard work!

Each class in Kindergarten, First and Second grades will have a raised planting bed to call their own. Each garden box

will have a special theme and will be planted, decorated and cared for by each of those classes. Some of the themes

include a “Storybook Garden,” “Rainbow Flower Garden,” “Strawberry Fields,” and “Sensory Garden.” We will let you

know the final decisions later.

We will also be adding to the pond area, a shade garden, creating a “Peace Garden,” as well as improving the space

overall. We are striving to create a lush, inviting place that is child friendly and will also be returned to the certified

“Schoolyard Habitat Site.” The real goal is to have the entire school community be able to use the outdoor space for vari-

ety of purposes. Classes will be able to go outside to read, write, conduct lessons, study nature, have celebrations and

for special occasions.

The greenhouse is full of seed trays that all the students have started! We are starting seeds to plant in the vegetable

garden and other gardens. Each grade level has a different focus. Hopefully some crops will be able to be harvested be-

fore school ends and the kids will get to taste them! The bulk of the crops will ripen over the summer and will be donated

to “Toni’s Soup Kitchen” as our school’s community service project. We will be looking for volunteers to help over the

summer, so stay tuned!

The Watchung Third Graders have a special month this April!

Each third grader gets to take home a “Bonnie Cabbage Plant” to

care for. They are encouraged to try and grow the largest cab-

bage plant in New Jersey and take a picture and send or bring it

to me to enter the contest (in September). There will be one win-

ner in each state that will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The third

graders also receive evergreen saplings from the NJ Department

of Forestry in honor of Arbor Day.

If anyone is interested in being involved in the courtyard or gar-

den, please contact me. We have plenty of things to do, green

thumb not necessary!

Watchung is Watching Our Character!

““Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”

– Maya Angelou

For the month of April we will be highlighting the character theme

COURAGE

You can help us encourage this month’s theme by modeling for our children to:

…Do the right thing, even if others are not.

…Bravely deal with your daily challenges.

…Be willing to try new things, even if you might fail.

…Tell the truth regardless of the consequences.

…Face your fears and work to overcome them.

…Admit your mistakes and learn from them.

…Not give into negative peer pressure

Here is a list a suggested books to read with your children to spark conversation about COURAGE:

Courage, B. Waber

Through My Eyes, R. Bridges

The Recess Queen, A. O’Neill

The Real Thief, W. Steig

Tuck Everlasting, N. Babbitt

The Empty Pot, Demi

Pink and Say, P. Polacco

The Rough Face Girl, R. Martin

You know it's spring when Mrs. Blafer gets the incubator out! Stay tuned for chick photos next month.

Notes from the Nurse:

Friendly reminder to 5th grade parents to please send in updated immunization information. Within one month following

an 11th birthday, every student born after January 1, 1997 must have two vaccinations:

One dose of Meningococcal Vaccine, and

A booster of Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.

You must submit documentation of these vaccinations within 30 days of your child’s 11th birthday to his/her elementary

school nurse. Please call your child’s health care provider as soon as possible for an appointment following his/her 11th

birthday. The Montclair Department of Health conducts vaccination clinics on the first and third Monday of each month.
