INDUSTRY | IN DEPTH

Skilled manpower requirements of the bur-geoning IT sector have always been fulfilled by India’s T-Schools. Even global companies rely heavily on Indian T-Schools for their IT manpower requirements, which is the reason

that most of the global IT companies have set up their R&D or global delivery centers in India. The global ideol-ogy has now moved away from labor arbitrage. While hir-ing, the global IT firms now focus on the innovative nature of individuals.

Dataquest has always been on the forefront to help the IT industry in spotting the best institutes for their talent re-quirements in the country through our annual survey, viz., the Dataquest-CMR Top T-School Survey. Like last year, the 2016 survey has been conducted in two parts where we have separately put the Top Government T-Schools and the Top Private T-Schools. The idea is simply to cre-ate a benchmark and listing the best Private T-Schools in the country. CMR has evaluated the T-Schools on various parameters and clinically gone through the data collect-ed from various sources to rank and rate the institutions in the country. After a rigorous process, the survey has been able to rank the Top Government and Top Private T-Schools in the country.

For Government institutions, the survey has listed only the Top 25 institution. Like the previous year, Dataquest has tried to throw the spotlight on the Top Private T-Schools in the country. Most of the T-Schools have endeavored to excel on many parameters and give tough fight to the gov-ernment counterparts such as IITs and NITs.

SERVING THE GLOBAL IT

India’s computer science graduates have set global benchmarks, culminated new heights in career and to-day head some of the biggest IT companies in the world. The testimony to their achievements lies in the high profile names such as Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft Corp) and Sunder Pichai (CEO of Google), among others. These names fill Indians with pride. In Silican Valley, thousands of Indian engineers empower the global enterprises with their IT skills. Software companies have always been on the lookout for good talent from Indian colleges and in-stitutes. Indian T-schools from both private and public sectors have played an ample role in nurturing the high quality breed of world class graduate.

While the above picture looks rosy and puts India as the frontrunner in producing the best talent for global IT requirements, it is important to bring into the focus the not-so-bright side of the profile of the Indian engineer-

ing graduates. In the last few years, concerns have been raised by many experts and well known figures from the IT industry such as Narayan Murthy on the quality of en-gineers which are coming out of various colleges. Fingers were raised on all institutions – IITs, NITs and private. This is a serious issue and throws India’s claims to the best talent into the witness box. The biggest accusation has been that curriculum in most of the institutions does not meet the industry standards.

MAKING ENGINEERS EMPLOYABLE

After the concerns around the employability of many of our graduates, the institutions have worked closely with the industry to improve their education system and shown interests in making curriculum compatible with the indus-try expectations.

Last year, Aspiring Minds National Employability Report broke the myth that Indian graduates are worth hiring. The report underlines that there seems to be a significant skill gap in the country as 80% of the engineering gradu-ates are unemployable. It is because of the lack of an up-graded education and training system. The report further blamed that engineering has become the de-facto gradu-ate degree for a large chunk of students. However, along with improving the education standards, it is quintessen-tial to evolve the undergraduate programmes to make them job centric. The report further underlines that Delhi continues to produce the highest number of employable engineers, followed by Bengaluru and the western parts of the country.

However, Dataquest-CMR T-School survey 2016 finds out that the private t-schools have become more active in order to work closely with the industry and hence, pro-vide a talent pool which is ready to be employed. Many of the t-schools enhanced their focus on signing MoUs with top IT companies for setting up centers of excellence and training. T-Schools from tier 3 cities have also emerged on the scene quite rapidly and improved their infrastructure, faculty numbers and facilities. In addition, the private t-schools have worked on improving their curriculum and upgrading it to the industry requirements. In many cases, the institutes have tied up with firms working in the specif-ic area, so that there is barely any gap in what the industry needs and what the institutes deliver.

In the next few years, the role of private t-schools is go-ing to be critical in producing a talent which is worth em-ploying in the IT industry. In addition, these institutions will play a huge role in meeting the requirements and goals of Government of India’s Skill India Mission.

T-SCHOOL | METHODOLOGY

How We Ranked the T-SchoolsThe methodology of the Dataquest-CMR “Best Tech School Survey 2016”BACKGROUND

Dataquest compiled the Eleventh Dataquest-CMR survey scorecard on the best T-Schools in the country on the ba-sis of a methodology and calculations vetted by research firm CMR.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

The aim of this survey was to determine the top Tech-nology Schools (B.E, B.Tech or similar level graduate technical course) in the country and rank them on a list of parameters important for institutes, students and re-cruiters.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The Dataquest-CMR survey was done in two phases.

PHASE 1 – DESK RESEARCH

In this phase all Tech Schools were invited to be a part of the survey. The CMR team did an exhaustive desk re-search. Lists of government institutes and private insti-tutes were prepared separately. The colleges established post 2009 or not offering a B.E, B.Tech or similar level graduate technical courses were removed from the list.

PHASE 2 – PRIMARY RESEARCH

The primary research consisted of three modules as mentioned below

Module-I: Institute Survey Module-II: Student Survey Module-III: HR Survey

MODULE I: INSTITUTE SURVEY

The Tech Schools short-listed in Phase 1 were approached by CMR team. Both email responses and face-to-face in-terviews with the college representative (preferably the placement coordinator) were considered. The information collected was on four broad heads: placement, academic environment, infrastructure and industry interface. These broad parameters constituted various sub-parameters as mentioned below.

PLACEMENTS

Percentage of students placed Number of companies visiting campus per student.

Maximum Salary - Per Annum. Average salary - Per Annum.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Computer to student ratio. Percentage of students that can be accommodated

in Hostel. Internet bandwidth of the institute Campus size Internet access in computer Labs. Wi fi Connectivity Presence of playground

ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

Faculty / Student ratio. Percentage of permanent faculty. Percentage of permanent faculty with PhD. Batch strength of PhD course in engineering discipline Average number of research papers published by

faculty in academic year 2014-15 Number of streams offered

INDUSTRY INTERFACE

Number of MoU signed by the Industry. Average no of industrial assignments (Research

projects & consultancy projects) by faculty in academic year 2014-15

 Incubation centre

MODULE II: STUDENT SURVEY

In this module, final year students of engineering colleges were interviewed in respective states where the insti-tutes are located. Students were interviewed face to face to capture the feedback on all institutes located in their states / zone. Sample was mix of engineering degree of various streams.

To eliminate bias, they were not asked to rate their own college where they are pursuing their degree. Students were asked to rate those institutes about which they were aware.

The questionnaire comprised a list of parameters such as faculty, infrastructure, placement and all round devel-opment of students. Rating on those parameters were captured on a 10 point scale.

T-SCHOOL | METHODOLOGY

Sample size of the students survey was 400, spread over 15 major cities of India, where participating institutes were located.

MODULE III: HR SURVEY

In this module, the respondent segment was HR manag-ers of different companies who recruit students. The list of recruiters received from respective institutes was used in this survey. Apart from that, zonal level and national level organisations were also covered who do campus recruit-ment. Respondents were asked to rate those institutes about which they were aware.

The questionnaire comprised a list of parameters such as brand image, quality of students and curriculum rel-evant to industry. Rating on those parameters were cap-tured on a 10 point scale.

Sample size of the HR survey was 200, spread over all four zones of India.

THE RANKING

The ranking of the institutes were done separately for Govt. and Private institutions.

Composite score of each institute was derived by com-bining Institute score, Student score and HR score.

Following weights were assigned to different scores.

Weights were derived by calculating the average of impor-tance score assigned to each parameter by HR Managers.

ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY

All the absolute data collected under each module were normalized and converted to relative data to evaluate the relative distance among the institutes across different pa-rameters. After normalization, the data had been multi-plied with respective weights of each parameter and then the total objective score was calculated for each module. These three scores of three modules were then added up and composite score was calculated out of 100. The whole data was then arranged in descending order in Govt. and Private category. And finally we got the top in-stitutes across India in both Govt. and Private category.

VALIDATION PROCESS:

CMR research team did all the data validation exercise. We had asked for a few documents from the institutes like the list of companies visited in the campus, number of students recruited by each one of them and the salary offered to the students, placement brochure, institute prospectus, compa-nies for whom consulting / industrial assignment that has been done, name of journal where research paper has been published and an official copy of semester results. Apart from these, we had also validated the data from secondary sources like company’s website. Placement data has been validated from the data provided by the various companies who generally visit campuses for placements.
