SCHULZ FRISCO JAZZ BAND RETURNS AS SEXTET AND WITH UPCOMING RISING STAR AS NEW REED MAN September 2013 Volume 38, Number 07 By Rod Belcher The onset of autumn brings on a new season of PSTJS monthly concerts, with–as usual–Bob Schulz and his Frisco Jazz Band offering a top-drawer curtain-raising attraction Sunday, September 15. Bob’s group has been our opening act for many seasons and always draws the plaudits of our jazz-hungry audience for its musicianship, both individually and ensemble-wise. This year Schulz’s band will be in sextet form, with players from California, Chicago, Texas and British Columbia imported to make up a truly all-star aggregation. The newest addition is clarinet/sax virtuoso Evan Arntzen. He’s the one from BC. We’ve watched and heard him grow remarkably for several years since playing as a teenager with various Canadian festival groups. He’s now more of an “old pro” having performed with many highly-rated outfits, including Jim Cullum’s band down San Antonio way. Bob’s Frisco Jazz Band for our September 15th date (as well as a previous night’s 4:30 to 8 p.m. gig at the New Orleans Restaurant in Pioneer Square) also includes swinging pianist Ray Skjelbred, from close-by Lake Forest Park; Tom Bartlett, trombone, and Mike Walbridge, tuba, both from Chicago. Drummer Hal Smith checks in from Texas. Missing from the usual Frisco bunch is banjoist Scott Anthony, who is not available to make the trip north from his Bay Area home. That leaves Schulz as the lone California resident in the sextet. Bob himself is a great Seattle-area favorite for his driving lead-horn work, vocals, and pleasant emcee style on the bandstand. WHERE: Ballard Elks Lodge, 6411 SeaviewAve. NW, Seattle. WHEN: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 15 ADMISSION: $12 PSTJS members; $15 non-members. Pay only at door. FURTHER INFO: Carol Rippey, 425-776-5072. Or - website: www.pstjs.org. Plenty of free parking; great view. Coffee, snacks, and other beverages available. . Above: Bob Schulz

  • To the PSTJS,

Thank you so much for the scholarship to Jazz  camp!  I  had  a  wonderful  time!  All of  the  instructors were  amazing  and  even those  instructors, who were  designated  to groups other  than mine, went out of  their way to assist me. This is a great camp and an  amazing  opportunity  for  musicians of  any  sort  on  any  instrument  to  learn, progress and perfect their skills. Once again, thank you for the scholarship! I  learned  a  lot  and  had  a  lot  of  fun  and was  very  inspired  to  keep  playing  and practicing.

    Sincerely, Caleb Gershon.

Dear members of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society, I would like to thank you for granting me a scholarship  to  Camp  Heebie  Jeebies  this summer, I wouldn’t have been able to attend the  camp  without  your  help,  nor  have  the amazing experience in which I did.  When I first  rolled  into  the camp parking  lot after a long drive I wasn’t very excited for the week I  had  in  store.  “Band  camp”  had  gradually established a negative reputation in my head and I was not expecting I would have a very fun time. However, after the first day or two I began to feel comfortable and had made some new  friends,  I was  beginning  to  understand

Jazz Soundings September 2013 Page 3

Jazz Camp Thank You LeTTers To psTJswhy  I  came  here  and what  benefit  I would gain from the experience. My cabin as well as the whole camp was filled with nice, outgoing people  as well  as  amazing musicians,  from which  I  learned  ten  times more  than  I  ever thought  I  would.  The  staff  and  instructors were all incredibly kind to me, and made me feel like Camp Heebie Jeebies was my home. I am a trumpet player, and with all of the time I spent playing that week I learned more about my instrument and myself as a musician than I ever have before. This opportunistic exposure to traditional jazz absolutely blew my mind. I never had played true Dixieland jazz in the past, because of the fact that almost all of my  trumpet  playing  and  performing  was through school. This week at camp showed me how fun traditional jazz is, and it made me realize how jazz has developed and changed from its original roots. I met amazing people, made  incredible  friends,  and  changed  my perspective of music. The way I play,  listen to,  and  enjoy  jazz  will  never  be  the  same and  I  have  only  Camp  Heebie  Jeebies  and you  to  thank  for  that.  This  summer  camp has proven me wrong, and has corrected the way  that  I  see  band  camps  in  general.  It  is maintaining tradition and reminding people of how marvelous Dixieland jazz truly is. Once again thank you so much, I can promise that Camp Heebie Jeebies will be seeing me next year, as long as I’m not in Europe playing in concerts at the time, in which there is nothing I can do. A special  thanks  to Judy Levy for encouraging me, pushing me in this direction, and teaching me some swing dance moves as well. Long live traditional jazz!

     Sincerely, TJ Rutter

Dear Members of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society,

I would like to thank you for letting me go on this awesome excursion into traditional jazz. When I first got there the weather was really nice and the people seemed friendly. Also at first when I first heard that it was a traditional jazz I wasn’t too excited because I never really liked it, but after this camp I really  enjoy  it  and  I  listen  to  it  all  the time. Curriculum at the camp was a lot but it made my chops a  lot  stronger  and now I’m able to play for long amounts of time. Sight reading music was always a little bit of a struggle  for me but  from the camp it got  a  lot  better  and  since  we  had  theory classes I know a lot more about music than I  did  before.  So  I  would  just  like  to  say thank you again  for  letting me go on  this awesome experience and I would definitely do it again.

    Sincerely,  Thomas Medak

    Dear PSTJS,

Thank  you  very  much  for  continuing  to send me  to  Camp Heebie  Jeebies  for  the past 3 years, and every year is better than the last. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to spend such quality time with  the  best  instructors  I  have  ever  had, and  thank  you  for  organizing  this  every year and making it possible. I know that I

    FROM the PREZ!

Here  we  are  at  the  beginning  of our  2013-14  Jazz  year.  Ten  Sundays, September through June. As always we will  have  the  Bob  Schulz  Frisco  Jazz Band playing for us September 14 and 15.  And a big Thank You to all of you who helped sponsor the band again this year. We couldn’t present this awesome band without your help.

Jazz  Camp  was  absolutely fabulous  this  summer.  The  weather was  perfect  and  the  students  jumped right  in  to  learn  more  about  their instrument(s)  and  also  music  theory, as well as work with other students  in their small “trad” bands and play under the  grand  direction  of  Sanford  Feibus in  the  three  Big  Bands.  The  Friday

evening  performance  was  spectacular.  We sponsored five young men, two new students  and  three  returnees.  You’ll find  their  pictures  along  with  their Thank  You  notes  to  the  members  in this  issue.    They  are  very  aware  of  the fact  that  if  it  weren’t  for  our  members buying  raffle  tickets  they  wouldn’t  be at  camp. Many  thanks  to  all  of  you  for your  continued  support.  Camp  Heebie Jeebies has a wonderful colorful website:  www.campheebiejeebies.us. Check it out.

That’s  it  for  me,  hope  you  all  had a  wonderful  summer  and  are  looking forward as I am to another ten Live Jazz Sundays. Together, we’re Keepin’ Jazz Alive.   Cheers, Judy
