17 middle school teams and 10 high school teams in the Eastern Regional Division for the Florida Science
Olympiad met at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona on Saturday, January 24th for the annual science
competition. This is a daylong competition with 23 events in a variety of science categories. Students worked
hard to prepare for research based events, laboratory activities, and engineering constructions. Our team
began in October to prepare, meeting nearly every Monday for two hours with a few extra hours the week
preceding the event. This was primarily a student run team. Ms. Christina Milton facilitated/coached the
students. Mrs. Julie Pantano was a team sponsor and also designed our team shirts. Ms. Melissa Stanke
attended the event and also judged the ‘Mission Possible’ event for the high school competition. We are
pleased to announce that overall our team ranked 4th place and we are awaiting our invitation to the state
competition at UCF in Orlando.
We would also like to thank and appreciate the parents who attended the
competition to support the students and all the hard work put in behind the
scenes. Thank you to NJHS for sponsoring our team as well as First Coast
Graphics who designed and produced our t-shirts and posters.
We are also pleased to announce that Bartram Trail High School ranked 3rd in
the high school division. There were also Switzerland Point alumni on the
Bartram Trail team. Go Bears!
