I’d like to introduce you to our new termly newsletter from the Schools and Colleges Liaison team at Leeds Trinity University College. This academic year we became an independent University College with the powers to award our own degrees. To mark this we have a new activity programme that details the activities and workshops that can be delivered by the team. I hope that by now you have received this. Leeds Trinity is committed to making sure that every young person knows that higher education could be for them. To this we are always willing to offer our services to schools and colleges throughout the region and offer a wide variety of fun and informative activities for all of your students. Many of you will have seen that Higher Education has been going through some changes recently and these will continue for some time, so we felt it important to share our information with you. For our first issue, we have decided to focus on Student Finance, with some excellent information and advice that we are sure will be invaluable to you from our Student Adviser, Emma Crompton. If you have any comments or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Building a sustainable campus

We are proud to be working in partnership with Aimhigher West Yorkshire on the Student Associates Scheme. The scheme is a mentoring programme with a difference, with the Associates themselves working alongside pupils from similar backgrounds to share experiences of overcoming the barriers they may face into higher education.

Leeds Trinity recruited 19 Student Associates and after two and a half days of vigorous training in November they were all keen to get started in Schools and Colleges across West Yorkshire. Now five months into the Scheme, our Associates are more enthused than ever and have enjoyed working with the pupils and helping raise their aspirations.

Our Associates are working with students ranging from Years 9 to 13. Associates look at role models and paths they took to achieve their goals, jobs and necessary qualifications needed, who goes to university and what barriers learners have with a view to demonstrating how barriers to progression can be overcome.

Our team are extremely pleased with the commitment and work produced by Associates at Leeds Trinity and we hope that you enjoy having them in your schools and colleges. We look forward to the Celebration Events organised by Aimhigher taking place in June where learners, teachers and HEI students willall be rewarded for their commitment and success in this ground breaking scheme.

“I feel the mentoring I am doing is making such a positive impact!”

Open Days are the best way for students to get a real feel for where they like to go to study. On Open Days they can get the real experience beyond the prospectus: try out the course they are thinking of applying for, the accommodation they will be expected to live in, the library they will study in and the bar they are likely to drink in.

Most students agree that Open Days helped them to make the best decision and confirm what felt right

for them. By making an effort to research, students can avoid the disappointment of starting acourse and finding that it is not what they expected. Our 2010 Open Days from 10am to 3pm are on:

Wednesday 30 JuneWednesday 15 SeptemberSaturday 2 OctoberSaturday 23 OctoberContact us to book or to find out more visit: www.leedstrinity.ac.uk/opendays Leeds Trinity Open Days offer taster sessions on course subjects, talks to support applications and finance, as well as information stands on all our support services. Campus tours offer the chance to look at all the facilities as well as our accommodation. School visits are also available.

Our campus is being transformed through a major investment programme into a modern campus village. From September 2010 new developments will include accommodation, reception and dining facilities ensuring a great student experience in a great university community.

All Saints Court is a brand new accommodation development of 198 self-catered bedrooms in flats of 6 with en-suite facilities and communal shared kitchen/dining/living space. A new landscaped outdoor area from this will link to our dining room which will be updated to provide a café/lounge

with soft seating and computers.Leeds Trinity is committed to reducing our impact on the environment and is achieving this through various energy saving and travel plan projects, and stronger electrical infrastructure. This will ensure our students have the best facilities with minimum impact on the environment.
