1 From the Helm…. Gary Nasby- Commandant Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 It has been a busy time for me, and most of the last 2 months has been spent at the new building getting it in shape for us to call home. This endeavor has not been done by me or any one person alone, but by a small percentage of our membership who have really put themselves out, and stepped up to give up a lot of their free time to wield ham- mers, paint brushes, shovels and moving carts to get the work done. I’m not going to name a lot of names here, but you and the rest of us who were there, know who you were. We have done some major renovations to the build- ing from what it was as a UAW hall. We have added a ADA handicapped women’s restroom, and renovated com- pletely the Men’s restroom into an ADA compliant rest- room. The kitchen was gutted and doubled in size, and is now a workable industrial style kitchen for all of our func- tions and any rental functions we wish to host . The mu- seum , though smaller, is first class. The ships store is growing and improving in the goods carried. Both the Mu- seum Director, Doug Hardwick, and the Quarter Master, Bud Albright can be proud of what they have accomplished with these two areas. The banquet/meeting hall has been stripped, painted, and floors cleaned and waxed, and is now ready to host events of 200+ people. The Foundation and League office spaces have been updated and are now workable places of business. As you enter the building this space has been setup to honor the people of the Detachment, past and present, and the Ma- rine Corps, and the Marine Corps League. This building known as : “Marine Barracks Indy” will allow us to carry out our Marine Corps League Mis- sion Statement: “ To preserve and promote traditions, ..to band together past and present Marines, ..to hold sacred history and traditions, ..to maintain true allegiance to America, ..to create a bond of comradeship between Ma- rines, ..to voluntarily render aide and assistance to Marines and FMF Corpsman, ..and perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps.” Marines & Associates be proud of what we have accomplished here. Now for the bad part. This building will take the efforts of all of us to SCUTTLEBUTT SCUTTLEBUTT SCUTTLEBUTT MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HIRAM I. BEARSS MARINE CORPS LEAGUE –DET #089 EDITOR: GARY D. We will have to have a presence at the building when it is rented out to protect it and our interests. Future projects will be planned to improve the site as monies become avail- able. Think about what you can do to help and volunteer. Don’t just pay your yearly dues, and call yourself a mem- ber. Become active in the League. You will find it reward- ing and will find the camaraderie between the members will make you many new friends. Lastly I am going to take up the cause started by our late, and one of the most active members and dedicated Marine that I have ever met, one Don Myers….. The “Plank Program”. WE HAVE NOT REACHED OUR GOAL! Many members have stepped up, and pledged $500 to $5000. Read the names on the wall of honor in the entry- way. But the percentage of those members who have is small. HIB has over 200 members. If every member pledged $500 (which can be paid in installments), we would be at $100,000. Look at page 4 and see where we are. I know times are tough, but what better cause could you give to than the one that made you what you are as Marines, and is striving to carry out our “Mission Statement”. Think about it and ask yourself, what you can do to step up your participation in your League, with either time or money, or both. Many members already are giving and I know they walk around knowing that they are carrying on the Marine Tradition, and are VERY proud of themselves. I know that as I read the names on the Wall of Honor and why they pledged, I am proud to know them, and be part of the same organization they belong to. Lastly I wish to thank Lt. Col. (Ret) Charles Hais- lip, whose guidance and foresight has gotten us to this point with the building. Semper Fi– Sir. Keep our troops in harms way in your prayers, and remember those who have gone before us, and may you and your family have a Joyous Holiday Season.
