1 From the Helm…. Gary Nasby- Commandant Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 August was a sad and trying month for the Detachment. Losing any member is hard, but losing two and of the caliber of Don Myers and Tom “Doc” Terpinas is very hard. These two Marines have held many offices within the Detachment and the Department, and their actions during these times and their active duty military careers have shaped lives for generations to come. They will be missed but never forgotten. Their legacy lives on and each of us should strive to accomplish a fraction of what they have. Do that, and our time here on earth will also be meaning full. I wish to thank all the Members who showed their respect for these two at the funerals, especially Sr. Vice Jim Wade who covered for me while I attended the National convention in Greensboro, NC. We just completed another successful Indy 1500 gun show raffle. Tickets are on page 7 for the next one to be held in October. If you can’t attend it, buying 6 tickets (or one) is a great way to show support for your detachment, and help us grow. There will be a Stand Down for homeless veterans on Sept. 9th. Please bring any new or used coats you wish to donate to the Barracks before that date. A box is at the Barracks for deposit. Contact Jesus Quintana to do- nate: (317) 445-9509. We will soon be closing on our new home at 550 S. Audubon Road, off Brookville Road ...the old UAW Un- ion Hall. We will be calling work parties to get it ready for our move sometime before the snow flies. If you can spare some time, please do so when these work party no- tices are sent out. It is going to be your home, so take ownership in it. We will also need help in cleaning, and moving from the old Barracks on English Avenue, and notices will be sent out for those work parties. Again please give us some of your spare time. SCUTTLEBUTT SCUTTLEBUTT SCUTTLEBUTT MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HIRAM I. BEARSS MARINE CORPS LEAGUE –DET #089 EDITOR: GARY D. Hey Marine– how about getting’ with the program and finding us some cars!

To All Hiram I Bearss Marines: The final steps are being taken to close on our new barracks (550 South Audubon) next week. Once the closing occurs, we need to get the new Barracks ready for our move in…which will occur in late October or early Novem-ber. The help of all of our detachment Ma-rines, Associates, Auxiliary, and family and friends will be needed to clean things up, get the renovations and painting done, and make sure that the move comes off without a hitch. I’ll be posting a volunteer work schedule soon and I ask that you make yourself available as much as you possibly can. Remember, the more of us that pitch in, the less each individ-ual will have to work. Let’s make this project one where “all hands are on deck”. Semper Fidelis Gary Nasby Commandant Hiram I Bearss Detachment 089

Marine Corps Tradition There is no concept that distinguishes a United States Marine from all others than the tradition that Marines care for their own. We carry from the field of battle our dead and wounded. We leave no one behind. We are more than veterans; we are family.

Nothing more underscores this tradition than Marines Helping Marines....It is after all our enduring heritage ....it is after all what has sustained us for more than two centuries...
