Pack 389 is in the Bayshore District of the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC) andserves Seabrook, El Lago, Nassau Bay, and Taylor Lake Village. Boys mostly cometo us from Ed White, Bay, Robinson, and Bay Area Charter, although all boys in thearea are welcome.

Carothers Gardens Opening - April 9Those seeking a pleasing setting for a graduation party, wedding reception, or other function now have a new option available in Seabrook: Drusilla Carothers Coastal Gardens.

The new event venue is part of the city’s park system and will open with a ribbon cutting at noon on Saturday, April 9. Everyone is invited to view the place during an open house until 4:00 p.m. It is at 502 Pine Gully Road, next to Pine Gully Park.

The Mission-style main house, formerly a private home, is an open plan structure that can accommodate a maximum capacity of 96 people at any one time in the main building as determined by the Fire Marshal. No more than 300 people shall be allowed at any event at Carothers Garden Facility, including outside space.

Among the special features of the house are Saltillo tile floors and counters, circular stone windows, and ornamental accent pieces of iron work and ceramic tile. The garden reaches down to the Galveston Bay waterfront.

“At 8.5 acres, this new garden park provides a wonderful sense of retreat,” said Seabrook Open Space Committee Chair Dori Nelson. “It also makes a substantial addition to local green space.”

Drusilla Carothers Coastal Gardens is available for rentals starting in April. For rates and other details, please call the city offices 281-291-5600.

Background on Carothers Coastal Gardens

• Drusilla Carothers Coastal Gardens on Galveston Bay was purchased by Durell Carothers and his wife Grace in 1954 as a bayside retreat for their family. It consists of 8.5 acres flanking Seabrook’s beautiful Pine Gully Park. The Mission-style house is now an event venue in a serene garden setting reaching down to Galveston Bay.

• Durell’s daughter Drusilla, known as Dru, raised her family in Houston, often weekending at the bay. After her children were grown she moved to Seabrook fulltime. Much of her work as an interior designer was inspired by the architecture and folk art of Mexico. Regular winter visits to Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende led her to open a Florida gallery.

• Dru also loved plants and established a beautiful garden. She often opened her home, garden, and beach to family and friends for celebration of graduations, holidays, anniversaries and weddings.

• Dru served on Seabrook's Park Board when Pine Gully Park was expanded and when Hester Garden Park opened. She backed development of the popular trails connecting Seabrook's parks, and she also served on the Eco-Tourism Committee when the Seabrook Wildlife Refuge was created. In the last months of her life she was out on the trail daily. Dru died in 2003.

• In 2007 voters added her property to the Seabrook park system through a bond referendum. Remodeling for public use followed, and the Drusilla Carothers Coastal Gardens will have its official ribbon cutting and opening as a new park on Saturday, April 9, from noon to 4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

• “Having this property available for event rentals is a fitting tribute to its former owner and to its history as a place that was used for many kinds of celebrations,” said Seabrook Open Space Committee Chair Dori Nelson.

The Seabrook Police Officers Association Charities in partnership with the Seabrook Rotary will present our 17th annual Men Who Cook event on April 12, 2011. This annual event has been one of the Bay Area’s most enjoyable social events for the last sixteen years. Our Cooks will be serving some of the finest dishes in the area. All of the recipes for the delicious dishes that you sample and biographies of the cooks will be yours to keep in the souvenir cookbook. This year we are excited to have several new cooks lined up to prepare their amazing array of specialties for you to sample!

The beginnings of Men Who Cook were centered on a social evening’s event between local Men Who Cook, the public, and the members of the Seabrook Police Department. Our goal was to raise money for scholarships awarded to graduating students of CCISD. The event has grown to include other charitable causes in the greater Seabrook community that have in the past included the D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) program, Evelyn Meador Library after school programs, and several programs for students at Seabrook Intermediate School. We invite you to attend or become a sponsor in support of this event that supports our community.

The always popular and crowd pleasing Pee Wee Bowen Band will once again be playing for your listening and dancing enjoyment. This event is a great opportunity to visit with old friends, make new ones and to socialize with the men and women of the Seabrook Police Department and Seabrook Rotary.

SEABROOK CITY ELECTION ON MAY 14, 2011

The city will hold a regular election on Saturday, May 14, 2011 for the positions of Mayor and Council Positions 2, 4 and 6 for three (3) year terms expiring in May, 2014. There will also be a special election to allow voters to vote for or against Proposition 1 “The adoption of the police officers’ civil service law.”

REGISTERING TO VOTE

You must be registered to vote in Harris County with a City of Seabrook address to vote in the Seabrook municipal election to be held on May 14, 2011. If you have recently moved to Seabrook from another state or another county in Texas or from another address in Harris County, you must complete a new Harris County voter registration application and report your Seabrook address. If you wish to vote in the May election, the final day to register to vote or to change your address is April 14, 2011. Harris County voter registration application forms are available at city hall. You may also download a voter registration form or check to see if you are registered to vote at www.tax.co.harris.tax.us/ or you may call Harris County Voter Registration at 713-368-VOTE (8683).

EARLY VOTING BY MAIL

Seabrook voters who are 65 years or older or who are disabled may vote early by mail for the May 14, 2011 city election. In addition, any Seabrook voter who will be absent from Harris County for the entire period of early voting (May 2 - May 10) and on Election Day (May 14) may also apply to vote by mail. Please call (281) 291-5736 or 5663 to request an application to vote early by mail. If you are voting early due to absence from Harris County, the application for ballot by mail must be mailed from a location outside of Harris County and we can only send the ballot to an address outside of Harris County. Voters who apply to vote early by mail due to age or disability, may mail the application from Seabrook and we can send the ballot to your Seabrook address. The deadline for delivering an application in person to the city secretary’s office is Friday, April 29, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. The deadline for receiving an application by mail is Friday, May 6, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.
