HUMANITIES STUDIES IN YEAR 8

HUMANITIES STUDIES IN YEAR 9

FLYING THE FLAGS AT SEAFORD

Chris Picton, Member of Parliament, recently visited our school to talk to our Year 8 Humanities students. Students had been learning about how government and democracy works in Australia. As their major assessment piece, students’ were asked to write a direct action letter to government regarding an issue they were passionate about advocating for. Chris talked about his role as a State Member of Parliament and his other role as Assistant Minister to the Treasurer of South Australia. Chris represents the electorate of Kaurna and he discussed the various different activities and community projects he is involved in and how he acts on behalf of our community. Chris also presented our school with a South Australian State flag. Thank you to Brooke and Lillana, our Year 8 SRC representatives for accepting this on our school’s behalf. Thank you also to Chris Picton for taking the time to come and speak with our students. It was great to hear about some of the wonderful initiatives and changes happening around Seaford and how our students can have a voice in what happens in our community.

Anita Sharrad, HASS Teacher

Students in Year 9 Humanities have recently been learning about the Industrial Revolution during the 18-19th Century, England. Students were asked to present information to explain how an individual would have experienced the Industrial Revolution during this time in any format they chose. Tigress students, Aimee, Kiwa and Tylah with their fantastic examples of the creativity and high standard of work being produced in our classes. Well done girls!

YEAR 9 iPROJECTOur Year 9 students are working very hard to prepare for the iProject Expo on Wednesday September 20. Students are creating innovative and inspiring projects and staff are pleased with the progress so far. Parents and caregivers, please continue to support your child to complete the project and process journal. Students who successfully complete the iProject will receive SACE credits, which is an excellent head start to the senior school years. More details regarding the Expo will be provided closer to the date, but please pencil it in to your diaries. Thank you for your on-going support and enthusiasm. We look forward to showcasing the students’ talent and skills at the Expo.

We were thrilled to welcome our Member for Kingston, Amanda Rishworth MP during Week 2 to present an Australian and Aboriginal flag to students in Seawinds who will be taking on the role of flag monitors with the southern flag poles. Ms Rishworth spoke to students and staff from Seawinds and Year 12 Legal Studies about the history of the flags and some important protocols. Year 12 students then took Ms Rishworth to visit the ANZAC Centenary Wall as her support was invaluable in the wall coming to fruition. Thank you to Amanda Rishworth MP for visiting and presenting the flags! Also thank you to Mr Simon McMahon for arranging the visit.

Stephanie Johnston, Head of Humanities

SCIENCE ALIVE EXCURSIONTen Year 11 Science students attended the Science Alive! Excursion at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Friday August 4. There were plenty of activities for students to try including a giant human body and brain to explore, live animals to touch and hold, and plenty of puzzles. We saw some explosive chemistry demonstrations on the main stage and heard people talk about careers in science as well as university and Tertiary and Further Education courses on offer in South Australia. There was plenty of excitement on the day and some students even bought tadpoles and seeds to take home. This was a great opportunity for students to build their enthusiasm for the STEM subjects necessary in the future and I would encourage more students to attend next year!

To experience Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy first-hand, 26 of our Year 9 students took part in the 2017 Canberra Trip. During our week away, we were able to visit and learn at some significant sites including: The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House (with a great experience meeting with our local member, the Honourable Amanda Rishworth MP, member for Kingston), Australian Electoral Commission – Electoral Education Centre, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Australian Mint, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Exhibition Centre (to learn about how and why the city of Canberra was first established) Our group also had a great time tobogganing and experiencing the snow at Perisher in the Snowy Mountains! Well done to students on the trip for

CONGRATULATIONS JOSH

STEM AMBASSADORSengaging in all learning experiences and being great ambassadors for Seaford Secondary College. I am sure that it was a memorable trip and great experience for our group. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families with this and to reduce the cost per individual, the Australian Government contributes $60 per student through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program for which we are grateful. A huge thank you and congratulations must also go to Mrs Lisa Pennifold and Mr Mitch Knuckey for their supervision, organisation and leadership in making the 2017 Year 9 Canberra Trip a success.

Stephanie Johnston, Head of Humanities

Congratulations to Year 12 student, Josh, who has been selected as Australian representative to be part of the United Nations Political Tour to the United States of America. Sixteen high school students from across Australia have been selected to attend the American Political Tour in 2018. Travelling across four states in North America, students will have the opportunity to experience the polarising nature of domestic politics in the US. From December 31 - January 24, students will travel to California, Louisiana, Washington DC, and New York City. What an incredible achievement to be selected for such an amazing experience. Well done Josh!

School holidays are a time to relax and refresh before a new term begins. For two of our students it was a time to delve into the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). India and Finlay were able to immerse themselves into hands on learning experiences, whilst meeting like-minded students and enjoying the scenery at Mylor Adventure Camp. As a result India and Finlay have been selected as STEM Ambassadors for Seaford Secondary College and our feeder primary schools. Another 8 students will form our first STEM action team. Interested students should contact Finlay, India, Ms Bester or Ms Griffin for more details on how to apply. This action team has lots to look forward to and we can’t wait to see what amazing ideas they come up with over this semester.

HIGH HOPESHI EVERYONE,Just a thought… have you ever really looked at a $100 note. It is not valuable because of its colour, it is not valuable because of what it is made of. It

cannot do anything of its own accord, so it is not valuable because of what it can do.

WHY IS IT VALUABLE THEN? It is valuable because of what it is. You can take the $100 and scrunch it up, and jump on it, or fold it out of shape, but, it is still a $100 note, and it is still valuable. The same is so true of each of us. People are valuable, not because of our abilities, but because of who we are. Sometimes life can distort us out of shape and we feel that we have been jumped on, but, we are still who we are despite our crumpled feelings, and we are still valuable. So many books written today, speak about this very thought, and encourage us to hold on to the fact that whether we are rich or poor, largish or smallish, a blue collar worker or not, that we are valuable in our own right. The next time you look in the mirror, give yourself a smile, stand up tall and remind yourself that…

YOU ARE VALUABLE!

OLD SCHOLAR REPORTSince graduating from Seaford Secondary College in 2013, former student, Alyssia Tennant, has had an amazing journey from studying in Adelaide, to moving to Canberra and now experiencing a

cultural exchange in the Middle East! Whilst studying a Bachelor of Journalism at the University of South Australia in 2014, Alyssia began to co-present a current affairs show for the student radio station, developing her interest in human rights and international affairs. Soon after, Alyssia decided to move to the political centre of Australia and continued her studies at the University of Canberra.

Alyssia has recently completed an internship at SBS News and also has experience in writing and editing online journals and student magazines. Her passion and commitment to improving international relations and communication lead her to

During the first week of the school holidays, five of our senior students were part of a team taking part in the YMCA Youth Parliament program held at Parliament House. This empowering program allows students to draft, present and debate their own Bill and refute and support other teams in both the Upper and Lower House. Congratulations to our students whose team’s Bill passed through both

Houses (unanimously in the House of Assembly) We are very proud of Kahlia, Olivia, Jeremy, Josh and Nathan for their commitment and excellence through this program. Special mention to Josh who was elected Premier this year and Nathan who was a Presiding Officer. Congratulations and well done to you all! A huge thank you to the students’ sponsors:

Onkaparinga Youth Council, Chris Picton MP, the Rotary Club of Noarlunga and the Rotary Club of Seaford whose generous support allowed our students to shine during Parliament Week.

be one of five students selected to participate in the Australia-Middle East Journalism Exchange. Alyssia has just returned from this life-changing experience in Qatar and Jordan, giving her the opportunity to experience global news organisation, Al Jazeera, as well as meet various diplomats and ambassadors along the way. We are so proud of Alyssia’s achievements since leaving Seaford and commend her resilience, passion and determination in reaching her goals and making a difference globally. We wish Alyssia all the very best and I’m sure we will see her face on television, read an article in the paper or hear her voice on radio in the near future!

On Wednesday August 2, 19 students represented our school in the Fleurieu Zone Football Carnival, held at Encounter Bay. The school entered two teams, a Year 8/9 boys and a Year 10 girls. The boys hit the ground running and managed to win all of their games, including the grand final against Encounter Bay. The undefeated team worked incredibly well and demonstrated positive sportsmanship throughout the day. The players included Coby (D5), Jacob (D5), Alex (D4), Jonah (D4), Ned (D4), Ben (C3), Angelo (A16), Nayte (B18), Coby (S1), Daniel (S5) and Kyle (S5). The Year 10 girl’s competition was much more relaxed though the girls had a blast. They were competing against some strong sides, and although the girls lacked confidence in their early games, they progressed as a team and were able to bounce back winning their last game of the day. The girls kept in high spirits and really supported one another on the field, which was commendable. The team included Amber-May (L10), Linsey (L10), Jemma

9-A-SIDE FOOTY CHAMPIONS!(L10), Libby (B18), Paige (S1), Emily (Q1), Lauren (L10) and Georgia (S1). A huge thank you to Bailey (Q4) for umpiring and helping out on the day and Mr Kendrick for coaching the boys team.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL WELLBEING AND ENVIRONMENT DAYOn Wednesday, July 5, Seaford Secondary College’s Student Representative Council held a Sausage Sizzle and a Casual Day to raise awareness for wellbeing. There were also activities to raise awareness shared during Pathways and Futures Program. The money raised from the day is being put towards funding new water fountains within in the school. Thanks to our groundsman, Mr Dopheide for his BBQ cooking and to the SRC students who helped cook, serve, prepare and advertise for the day.
