PROGRAM
Octet for Strings in E-flat Major, Op. 20 Felix Mendelssohn Allegro moderato ma con fuoco (1809-1847) Andante Scherzo. Allegro leggierissimo Presto
BIOGRAPHIESFor nearly 20 years, ROB KAPILOW has brought
the joy and wonders of Classical music – and unraveled some of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and back-grounds. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s work brings music into people’s lives – opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear. The Boston Globe said, “It’s a cheering thought that this kind of missionary enterprise did not pass from this earth with Leonard Bernstein. Rob Kapilow is aw-fully good at what he does. We need him.”
The reach of his interactive events and activities is wide, both geographically and culturally – from native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school stu-dents in Louisiana to wine tasters in the Napa Valley. From tots barely out of diapers to musicologists hailed from Ivy League programs, his audiences are diverse and unexpected, but invari-ably rapt and keen to come back for more.
Kapilow’s range of activities is astonishingly broad, including his What Makes It Great? presentations (now in its 15th season in New York and Boston), his family com-positions and Family Musik events, and his Citypieces. His popularity and appeal are reflected in notable invitations and achievements; he appeared on NBC’s Today Show in conversation with then-host Katie Couric, and presented a special What Makes It Great? event for broadcast on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center in 2008. He has written two highly popular books published by Wiley/Lincoln Center: All You Have to Do Is Listen (2008), which won a PROSE Award for “Best Book in Music and Performing Arts,” and What Makes It Great? (2011), the first book of its kind to be specially designed for the iPad with embedded musical examples.
A documentary film – Summer Sun, Winter Moon,
named after Kapilow’s choral and symphonic work of the same title – aired nationwide on PBS last year. He is also writing a piece for the Marin Symphony that will com-memorate the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge this year.
Kapilow’s career has been marked by numerous major awards and grants. He won first place in the Fontainebleau Casadesus Piano Competition and was the second-place winner of the Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition with the Detroit Symphony. Kapilow was featured on Chicago Public Radio’s prestigious Composers in America series and is a recipient of an Exxon “Meet-the-Composer” grant and numerous ASCAP awards.
Kapilow has conducted many of North America’s finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra; the National Symphony; the St. Louis, Atlanta, Toronto, and Detroit symphonies; and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is an exclusive Schirmer composer and his composi-tions have been performed by almost every major American orchestra as well as ensembles in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
“In the musical world, the buoyant Chamber ensemble CONCERTANTE fills an important niche,” praises The Washington Post. Concertante has established itself as a Chamber ensemble that combines world-class virtuosity and an adventurous willingness to explore and enhance the sextet repertoire.
The New York Times hails the group for its “cohesive and beautifully polished sound.” Composed of virtuoso string players, the group performs a wide ranging repertoire of works by established masters as well as less commonly performed composers. Concertante members have won national and international music competitions, appearing in prestigious venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lon-
don’s Royal Festival Hall, and Shanghai’s Grand Theatre. n

BIOGRAPHIESEstablished in 1954, the WROCLAW PHILHARMONIC
ORCHESTRA is widely embraced for its diverse repertoire, which spans various musical eras from Baroque to Con-temporary. The European symphonic ensemble consists of soloists who graduated from some of the most prestigious European music academies. The orchestra has performed in renowned concert halls throughout the world, including New York’s Lincoln Center, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, the Musikverein in Vienna, Festspielhaus in Salzburg, Phil-harmonie in Cologne, and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
The group was awarded a Gold disc for its 2009 Sym-phonically Perfect recording, and its recent Witold Lutoslawski Opera Omnia/Chamber Music received the prestigious Fry-deryk Award.
Leading the orchestra since 2006 is acclaimed conductor JACEK KASPSZYK, whom Gramophone praised for his ability to make a “mesmerizing impression.” The magazine observed: “Even the tiniest details, he managed to achieve absolutely everything.”
Kaspszyk has conducted many orchestras throughout Europe, including the Bayerische Rundfunk, RSO Berlin, Orchestre Nationale in Paris, Wiener Symphoniker, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. In the United States, he collaborated with the Cincinnati, San Diego, Calgary, and Winnipeg orchestras. His work with the Polish National Opera won international recognition with acclaimed perfor-mances at the Bolshoi in Moscow, Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, and the Perolada Festival in Spain.
Since 1970, when GARRICK OHLSSON became the first American ever to earn the Gold Medal in the Warsaw Chopin Competition, he has earned honors and acclaim on the world stage. The New York Times called him “excellent” and “daring.” The Cleveland Plain Dealer said he is “exquisite … a model of imperial control.”
The pianist has long been regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on Chopin’s music, with The Bos-ton Globe commenting: “Ohlsson’s uncanny aptitude for Chopin’s form and function rests in his ability to adapt his prodigious technique to suit both.” Awarded the 1994 Avery Fisher Prize, Ohlsson has also gained recognition for his expert performances of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert. n

MONICA MANCINI and
ARTURO SANDOVAL IN CONCERTFeaturing
ARTURO SANDOVAL’S BIG BAND Saturday, February 25, 2012, 8:00 PM
There will be one 20-minute intermission. The taking of photographs or use of recording devices is strictly prohibited.
BIOGRAPHIESThe New York Times describes MONICA MANCINI’s
voice as “the glamorous equivalent to diamonds flashing.” She “sings like a dream,” hails Jazz Times. The songstress pays tribute to her father, Henry Mancini, the genius behind the timeless tunes Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, and A Time for Us from the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet.
Mancini began her singing career as a member of the Henry Mancini Chorus. She created a name for herself as a stu-dio singer in Los Angeles, where she contributed vocals to numer-ous film scores and recordings for major names, including Plácido Domingo, Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones.
Mancini’s album, Ultimate Mancini, in memory of her late father, includes guest performers Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rankin, and Plas Johnson. The collection earned double Grammy nominations. Her other albums include Cinema Para-diso, Monica Mancini, and Dreams of Johnny Mercer. Mancini is celebrated for her Academy award-nominated song A Love Be-fore Time, from the critically acclaimed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Other successes include Baby Mine, Too Late Now from Royal Wedding, and I’ll Never Say Goodbye from The Promise.
Grammy and Billboard award winner ARTURO SANDOVAL’s “playing is unabashedly spectacular,” raves The New York Times. The Cuban Jazz trumpet master possesses
“some of Jazz’s fiercest chops,” proclaims the New York Post. The winner of the 2007 Latin Grammy Award for “Best Latin Jazz Album” for his release Rumba Palace, Sandoval is widely embraced internationally for his repertoire encompassing Cuban, Jazz, and Classical music. Fluent in at least four musi-cal languages, Sandoval can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a Bebop tune, soar over a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart concerto, and soothe listeners with a luscious ballad, with equal power and grace.
A protégé of the legendary Jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949. At age 12, Sandoval began studying Classical trumpet and has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of Jazz trumpet and flugelhorn.
Sandoval has won four Grammys, six Billboard awards, and an Emmy for composing the entire underscore on HBO’s For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story. His versatility is showcased on recordings with Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, Stan Getz, Johnny Mathis, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart, and Alicia Keys.
ARTURO SANDOVAL’S BIG BAND provides the musical accompaniment for the evening. n

BIOGRAPHYWhen KEVIN JOHNSON was 9 years old, his
parents gave him his first pull-string dummy for Christ-mas. With no formal training, he taught himself the art of ventriloquism over a four-year period, performing onstage at age 13 with his magician grandfather. He dazzled with his “Godzilla Theater” performance on America’s Got Talent and the Late Show With David Letterman, turning his stage pets – cockatoo Matilda and buzzard Clyde – into such an attraction that David Letterman himself hailed: “Very, very
impressive. I’ve never seen anything like that.” The International Association of Amusement Parks
and Attractions, which represents entertainment venues in more than 90 countries, named Johnson the “Best Male Performer” of 2004 and 2006.
The Modesto Bee observed: “His lips didn’t move. And after a while, it didn’t matter because the crowd had bought into the believability of his characters. They watched the birds, not Johnson. And they laughed.” n

TICKET BROKERSTickets to all performances at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) are available exclusively through the theater’s Ticket Office and official website www.cerritoscenter.com. The CCPA does not work in conjunction with any other ticketing organizations or websites. Purchasing from a ticket broker, scalper, or unauthorized website is never a good idea because:
• You will always pay more than face value for each ticket. In many cases, the tickets you purchase from a broker are not as good as what is available directly through the CCPA Ticket Office.
• We cannot guarantee the authenticity of the tickets.• In the event that there is an issue with your tickets
or if they are found to be inauthentic, we cannot help you because you did not purchase the tickets from the theater; you will be asked to purchase new tickets to watch the performance or leave the premises. The face value on the tickets you are holding cannot be applied towards the purchase of new tickets.
• Ticket brokers often purchase wheelchair locations and sell them as regular seats. Not only does this practice prevent you from attending the performance, it also prevents us from selling these seats to patrons that do need wheelchair accessibility.
• We cannot replace any lost or stolen tickets.• We cannot contact you with any information
regarding show cancellations, performer lineup changes, or rescheduled events. All correspondence will be made to the original ticket purchaser who may not notify you of changes made to the performance.
• Instead of supporting the performers and organizations that work hard to put on the events that you enjoy, you are rewarding people and businesses that only make it difficult for real fans like yourself from seeing your favorite performers without being charged a premium.
Following are some tips to ensure that you are purchasing from the CCPA:
• Visit or call the Ticket Office directly at (800) 300-4345 during regular business hours. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to help with your ticketing questions or needs.
• Do not use a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) to find our website. Many search engines make money by listing various website addresses before ours. These other websites are unauthorized to sell tickets to our events. Instead, type www.cerritoscenter.com into the website address field.
• Make sure that you are purchasing from the official CCPA website. Look at the website address and make sure that www.cerritoscenter.com is at the beginning of the website address listed. If it is, you may safely continue with your transaction. If it is not, close the page and start over as you are on an unauthorized site.
