INTRO

G - The world has changed drastically in the past few decades, which has witnessed an increase in the number of young people participating in volunteer service to serve the community. This is pleasing to see, particularly when more and more people are benefiting from the service.

I - ‘Volunteer service’ refers to any type of work that is done free of charge and done willingly such that one is motivated to give one’s time or energy to work towards a project or cause. It is assumed that ‘volunteer service’ is formal in this case such that it benefits a group of people like the needy.

PEEL 1P - Participate by taking part in projects benefiting the needy

E - Such projects serve to provide help, care and joy to the elderly and less fortunate by changing their lives. Young people can spend time with them by entertaining the elderly at old folks’ home, or helping out in chores at the orphans’ homes. They can also take part in food or money donation drives which benefits these group of people, or fundraising activities for money to build facilities for them.

E - Such projects will not only allow these groups of people to feel cared, it will train young people’s communication skills too

E - These projects’ main aim is to allow them to play a role in saving the use of limited resources globally. Young people can participate in newspaper collection activities, campaigns which include the 3 ‘R’s, or any other recycling activities.

E - With many countries encouraging people to do their part in conservation, these projects would be helpful.

PEEL 3

P - Participate in projects that benefit students

E - This serves to benefit students in schools by helping them out with their studies. Young people can play a role as a teacher to teach students or recap with them the concepts taught in each subject.

E - This will not only help to ensure the students are able to keep up with their studies, it will also help the young people to recall what they have learnt previously as most of them will be well-educated, thus helping the community.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there are many kinds of volunteer service young people can take part in to help the community. Such service is not restricted to helping the needy only, but also taking part in conservation. Over the years, many projects that are based on volunteer service have been organised to encourage young people to give back to society by giving them a chance to do so. These projects can either be short term or long term, but the most important of all, they bring about benefits to both the volunteers and beneficiaries.
