En aquel tiempo, hubo una boda en Caná de Ga-lilea, a la cual asistió la madre de Jesús. Éste y sus discípulos también fueron invitados. Como llegara a faltar el vino,
María le dijo a Jesús: “Ya no tienen vino”. Jesús le contestó: “Mujer, ¿qué podemos hacer tú y yo? Toda-vía no llega mi hora”. Pero ella dijo a los que servían: “Hagan lo que él les diga”. Había allí seis tinajas de piedra, de unos cien litros cada una, que servían para las purificaciones de los judíos. Jesús dijo a los que servían: “Llenen de agua esas tinajas”. Y las llenaron hasta el borde. En-tonces les dijo: “Saquen ahora un poco y llévenselo al mayordomo”. Así lo hicieron, y en cuanto el mayordomo probó el agua convertida en vino, sin saber su proce-dencia, porque sólo los sirvientes la sabían, llamó al novio y le dijo: “Todo el mundo sirve primero el vino mejor, y cuando los invitados ya han bebido bastante, se sirve el corriente. Tú, en cambio, has guardado el vino mejor hasta ahora”. Esto que hizo Jesús en Caná de Galilea fue el primero de sus signos. Así manifestó su gloria y sus discípulos creyeron en él.

II Niedziela Zwykła
W Kanie Galilejskiej odbywało się wesele i była tam Matka Jezusa. Zaproszono na to wesele także Jezusa i Jego uczniów. A kiedy zabrakło wina, Mat-ka Jezusa mówi do Niego: Nie mają już wina. Jezus Jej odpowiedział: Czyż to moja lub Twoja sprawa, Niewiasto? Czyż jeszcze nie nadeszła godzina mo-ja? Wtedy Matka Jego powiedziała do sług: Zróbcie wszystko, cokolwiek wam powie. Stało zaś tam sześć stągwi kamiennych przeznaczonych do ży-dowskich oczyszczeń, z których każda mogła po-mieścić dwie lub trzy miary. Rzekł do nich Jezus: Napełnijcie stągwie wodą! I napełnili je aż po brze-gi. Potem do nich powiedział: Zaczerpnijcie teraz i zanieście staroście weselnemu! Oni zaś zanieśli. A gdy starosta weselny skosztował wody, która stała się winem - nie wiedział bowiem, skąd ono pocho-dzi, ale słudzy, którzy czerpali wodę, wiedzieli - przywołał pana młodego i powiedział do niego: Każdy człowiek stawia najpierw dobre wino, a gdy się napiją, wówczas gorsze. Ty zachowałeś dobre wino aż do tej pory. Taki to początek znaków uczy-nił Jezus w Kanie Galilejskiej. Objawił swoją chwa-łę i uwierzyli w Niego Jego uczniowie. Następnie On, Jego Matka, bracia i uczniowie Jego udali się do Kafarnaum, gdzie pozostali kilka dni.

Czym jest modlitwa Modlitwa jest to otwarcie się czło-wieka na Boga. Modlitwa jest tym lepsza, im głębsza jest nasza wia-ra: im lepsze jest nasze życie - peł-ne zaufania Opatrzności Bożej, Jego Miłości i Miłosierdziu, pełne służby bezinteresownej bliźniemu. Ale z drugiej strony, aby życie by-ło dobre, potrzebna jest człowieko-wi dobra modlitwa. Bez niej coraz mniej stać czło-wieka na prawdziwą miłość. Jezus sam często się modlił i podkreślał wielokrot-nie, że modlitwa jest każdemu człowiekowi nieo-dzownie potrzebna. Każda modlitwa powinna być dla człowieka uci-szeniem, uspokojeniem przed Bogiem. Powinna być spojrzeniem pełnym zachwytu dla Jego pięk-na, miłości, potęgi i mądrości. Może to być nasze otworzenie się na Boga wtedy, gdy przerażeni, zmartwieni, przygnębieni, zatro-skani prosimy Go gorąco o spełnienie czegoś, co jest dla nas bardzo ważne, na czym nam bardzo zależy. I prosimy Go o ratunek, o ochronę, o zdro-wie, pracę, egzamin, życie domowe - to mogą być nasze problemy albo problemy naszych najbliż-szych. Może to być otworzenie się na Boga, gdy radośni dziękujemy za otrzymane łaski, za spełnione nasze prośby i błagania, za pomoc i opiekę, za osiągnię-cia i uratowanie od nieszczęścia. Albo gdy jeszcze oszołomieni Jego mądrością, po-tęgą, pięknem, wspaniałomyślnością, która choćby na moment nam się odkryła, mówimy Mu słowa naszego uwielbienia. Albo gdy pełni skruchy, pokory, żalu i gotowi do zadośćuczynienia przepraszamy Go, żeśmy od Niego odeszli, że życie nasze nie było zgodne z Jego wolą, żeśmy dopuścili się krzywdy przeciwko ludziom. Wtedy modlitwa jest również spojrze-niem na siebie Jego oczami, aktem samokontroli. I tak modlitwy możemy podzielić na: uwielbienia, przeproszenia, dziękczynienia i prośby. Każda an-gażuje całego człowieka: jego uczucia i wolę, nie jest wyłącznie aktem intelektualnym. Modlitwa ma rozmaite formy. Może być prywatna - osobista i publiczna - społeczna. Każda modlitwa chrześcijanina - nie tylko społeczna, ale nawet naj-bardziej prywatna - nie jest prywatna w sensie świeckim. Modlimy się do Ojca z Chrystusem - to Chrystus modli się z nami do swojego Ojca.

Jesus performs his first sign at a wedding feast in Cana. Background on the Gos-pel Reading
This Sunday we begin the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. For many Sundays in this lectionary cycle (Cycle C), our readings will be taken from the Gospel of Luke. Occasionally, however, we will read from John's Gospel. This is true of today's Gospel reading, which describes the beginning of Jesus' min-istry and his first miracle. To situate today's reading within the context of John's Gospel, we note that John's report of this event follows Jesus' call of his first disciples. John tells us that Jesus and his disciples were invited to this wedding at Cana, as was Jesus' mother, Mary. There is no parallel report of this miracle at Cana in the Synoptic Gospels. In the Church's liturgical history, the wedding feast of Cana is closely associated with the baptism of the Lord and the adoration of the infant Jesus by the Wise Men. In this context, the sign Jesus per-forms at the wedding feast is celebrated as an epipha-ny or a manifestation of Jesus' divinity. Yet awareness of Jesus' impending passion and death is ever present in John's Gospel. Even in this report of Jesus' first sign, the language used an-ticipates Jesus' passion. When Jesus says to his moth-er that his hour has not yet come, he protests against her wishes in language that John will use again when reporting Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. When introducing the story of Jesus washing his disciples' feet, John writes that Jesus knew that his hour had come. In John's Gospel, Jesus is very much in com-mand and aware of all that is to happen to him. Here, as elsewhere in John's Gospel, Mary is not mentioned by name, but is referred to instead as the mother of Jesus. Mary is influential in Jesus' first sign. She will also be present at his Crucifixion, a witness to the final manifestation of his divinity. John's Gospel describes seven signs that indi-cate Jesus' identity to his disciples. John never speaks of these signs as miracles because their importance is not in the deed that Jesus performs but in what these deeds indicate about Jesus' identity. Here, as when John describes the other signs, the disciples are said to begin to believe, but no mention is made as to
whether the other wedding guests are even aware of what has happened. Marriage and wedding feasts are metaphors used in Scripture to describe God's salvation and the Kingdom of God. Here at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, John's Gospel seeks to establish that Jesus is going to re-interpret and fulfill Yahweh's promise to Israel. Jesus establishes the New Cove-nant. A hint about what this New Covenant will be like is made evident in the deed that Jesus performs. Asked to do something to address the awkward situa-tion that the absence of wine at a wedding feast would create, Jesus' miracle produces vast quantities of wine—six jars holding thirty gallons each are filled to overflowing with choice wine. This lavish response to a simple human need is a vision for us of the abundance of God's kingdom. It challenges us to respond generously when con-fronted with human need today. We respond as best we can, fully confident that God can transform our efforts, bringing the Kingdom of God to fulfillment among us.
Saint Vincent Feast day January 23
Vincent was trained and ordained a deacon by Valerius, bishop of Sara-gossa, Spain, in the third century. The Roman em-perors had made being a Christian punishable by
death, so when Emperor Dacian discovered Bishop Valerius holding Christian services, he had him im-prisoned. Vincent was soon caught visiting the bish-op and was also imprisoned. The emperor refused them food. Both men were so cheerful and strong in suffering, however, that the emperor banished Bish-op Valerius and had Vincent tortured on the rack. Vincent endured this suffering for love of Christ. Dacian told Vincent he would spare his life if he would hand over the sacred books to be burned. Vincent refused, and in a fury, Dacian ordered that he be roasted on the gridiron. Again, Vincent suf-fered this patiently and survived. It is said that Daci-an wept with rage and had Vincent thrown in a dun-geon filled with broken pottery. Vincent was so calm and heroic that he converted the jailer. The emperor then had Vincent put in a regular prison. Friends came to console Vincent, cleanse his wounds, and pray with him. Vincent finally died there in a bed his friends had made for him.
