Scholarship Applications Available

Applications for the parish scholarship for our graduating seniors are now available in the parish office. The date for the return of the scholarship is May 5.

This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidar-ity with the people of Guatemala. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle, Rights and Responsibilities, and reminded that as Christians, we are called to uphold and protect the basic rights of others. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Guate-mala and all around the world, that we may come to know and protect the rights of all people.

Offertory Enhancement As announced last weekend at Mass and in the bulletin, Sacred Heart Church is launching a Stewardship Appeal. The objectives of the Appeal are: (1) to encourage all pa-rishioners to use the envelope system regularly, or, the pre-ferred response is to use the parish AutoShare for your regular contribution; (2) to reaffirm the concepts of Chris-tian Stewardship; and (3) to request a weekly increase in the offering by all the members of the parish. We hope that all households will make a modest financial increase in their parish financial support of the next several weeks.

Marriage Moments & Parenting Pointers

Just as Jesus was transfigured and appeared glori-ously to Peter, James, and John (Mt 17: 1‐9) so too love for your spouse can bring out the best in the other. Recall for a moment your wedding day and the wonder of seeing each other clothed in splen-dor.

March 21 is Single Parent Day. If you are a single parent we honor you for the effort you must make to provide continuous care for your child, often without the help of a ready partner. If you are blessed to have a helpmate, reach out to a parent who needs a helping hand this weekend.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

In today’s second reading, Timothy is issued a strong directive: “Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.” For the early Christians this could mean torture and execution. For most Christians today enduring hardship for the gospel might include accepting ridicule or mockery, or the sug-gestion that we lack sophistication. Nevertheless, in his letters, Saint Paul is adamant that we should not be ashamed of being followers of Christ. Good stewards are not ashamed of their allegiance to Christ. They do not hide their faith. Reflect on this question: Are you willing to speak about following Christ Jesus no matter who your listeners happen to be?

In The Catholic Messenger this week (March 6):

Pope Francis marks the first anniversary of his election to the papacy March 13. Bishop Amos and others share some thoughts about the impact of the Holy Father’s leadership.

The first of two celebrations of individuals preparing to enter the Catholic Church occurred

March 9 in Davenport. The second will take place March 16 in Ottumwa. In our Lenten column series, SAU President Sr. Joan Lescinski observes that the readings for the second

Sunday of Lent call us to transformation, and out of our “comfort zones.” A story about a day in the life of Clinton Franciscans concludes our two-part report on National Catholic

Sisters Week. More than 50 parishes in the diocese requested free copies of the book “Rome Sweet Home” by converts

Scott and Kimberly Hahn; some parishes are doing book studies. As the relationship between Church and state grows more hostile, St. Ambrose University took a look back

at its namesake’s influence on Church-state relations in the 4th century. Pew Research Center released a study on whether Pope Francis’ popularity has resulted in bringing new or

returning Catholics to the fold. Pope Francis criticized those who practice fasting as a mere ritual, rather than a sacrifice representative of a

religion of love. Opinions Page: Fr. Rolheiser writes about how genuine prayer brings us before God in searing honest. Fr.

Barron observes that Lent is a time to revisit spiritual fundamentals. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago is undergoing a new round of chemotherapy because of signs of new

activity of cancerous cells. Thank you for your support. Please let us know of any stories, ideas or suggestions you’d like to share with The Catholic Messenger!

Son of God Movie Rating "Due to the intense and bloody portrayal of the Crucifixion, the scourging and several sequences of violence in the movie Son of God, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. The movie has a rating of PG-13 by the Motion Pic-ture Assoc. of America. Rather than simply sug-gesting parental discretion, the PG-13 rating car-ries the warning: “Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Chil-dren Under 13.”

dear Padre

The best place to pray is in solitude. But soli-tude in this case doesn’t mean an isolated place; it is, rather, a state of the heart.

Many Christians can enter into a state of solitude on a crowded train. I’ve talked with others who find solitude while sitting on a bench in a crowded shopping mall.

However, to cultivate this interior state that opens a Christian to heartfelt conversation with God, many of us need to physically shut out distractions. As Jesus advised, go into your room—your secret place—close the door, and pray there. For some people, this “secret place” is a church or chapel. Many people pray before or after Mass. Some churches have a special ora-tory or chapel for the Blessed Sacrament.

But, like you, many people find it difficult to go to a church or chapel every day, so some of them devote a special corner of their home to prayer. This prayer cor-ner usually has a Bible, crucifix, statue, sacred picture, candle, or plant.

We can find solitude in the car, in a favorite na-ture spot, in the garden, or on a morning jog. Once you start looking for it, solitude isn’t as difficult to find as you’d expect, because God is present in every place and in every moment—so wherever we can find solitude, he will be there.

Gn 12:1–4a / 2 Tm 1:8b–10 / Mt 17:1–9

Some people get excited about moving. I’m not one of them. I don’t like the boxes and the mess, and I find it hard to get settled in a new place. So I can’t imagine what 75-year-old Abram thought when God told him to leave his homeland and set out for a place he’d never seen. I stand in wonder of faith so strong that it finds the Word of God compelling with no evidence that the promises will come true. But in our long history as a people of God, God is forever waking people up or giving them a vision of a different life, usually far from where they are. So it is with our spiritual life as well. In today’s Gospel, Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a high mountain and into a vision of Jesus as the glorious Son of God. Wherever they had been in their faith, this was a radical call to move, to grow deeper, and to embrace the identity of the man they called Jesus. Until that moment, Jesus was a compelling preacher and healer. On top of that mountain, he became the

fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Moses and Elijah represent those parts of the Old Testament canon). When Peter, James, and John heard the words “Listen to him” coming from the cloud, they could no longer pre-tend this was an ordinary religious figure. They would never be the same, and the journey would lead them to the cross and beyond. Are you being asked to move in your spiritual life? Where will that take you?
