We all knew going into doubles we were down two sets but just goes to show that we put up a fight

even though we were down, we should never give up and cheer for your team mates no matter

what the outcome!!

Finishing 2nd on the Ladder is a great effort by all girls making it to the semi finals, hopefully this

winter season we can do one better!!

Disappointing day overall losing to a very strong Coatesville team, who we happened to beat 5 rubbers to 1

only a few weeks ago. Joey was the standout who won impressively. We can only look to improve our

efforts next season and work on our consistency.

Today was a victory of heroics over aesthetics. Of grunt over grace. But it was a victory, and one that

sees us through to the Grand Final against the team that finished first in the H&A season.

David Kenley took on the weekly burden of number 1, with more pressure than usual, knowing how

much was riding on him continuing his strong form. He did not let us down, and proved too solid in

the big points against a talented opponent. Yakov Eydlish played at 4, against a sweet-striking leftie

who could easily play 1, and indeed did at the start of the season. Yakov pulled out his best tennis on

the biggest stage, and outsmarted and outgrunted his more technical opponent. Was stirring stuff.

Adam Rapoport at no. 3 prevailed in a tight, sea-sawing match against another good striker, neither

player able to establish long periods of flow. Somehow Adam managed to literally slice his way out

of serious trouble. Alan Datt's heroics were about just getting up to play, passing a fitness test on the

eve of the match. Whilst he went down to a tall and talented student, his effort would prove

invaluable in clearing cobwebs for the doubles.

So it was 3-1 going into the doubles, but we knew that it could easily have been 2-2 or worse. So the

battle was far from over. David/Alan took on their counterparts, and displayed more heroics. The

straight sets win was a massive relief for the team, given the struggle faced by Adam/Jack Stock on

the adjacent court. Adam/Jack simply could not impose themselves into the match. Whilst

many/most games went to deuce, the story of the match was that Adam could not put away enough

of the points that Jack had heroically kept alive. We were extremely lucky that David/Alan were so

reliable and steady.

Today was a mirror of our season - close wins forged by a team effort, and team spirit - and Maccabi

shirts! Let's carry that through into one more round!

For now, a much-needed week off, both for recovery and some much-needed fine tuning.

- Adam Rapoport

Section 10 - Schattner

WIN

Sensational semifinal success - a brilliant team effort

Maccabi smashed Lauriston 4 rubbers to 2 starting with the first doubles Paul Kovacs and (son of

Rob) David Schattner losing a tight 1st set after having chances, and ended up losing in straight sets.

The second doubles pair of Michael and Jordan kept the team's hopes alive by winning in a very tight

3 set encounter, 6-4 in the third.

The singles proved to be the determining factor with incredible performances by the youngest and

oldest in the team. At number 1, David, serving bombs, overpowered Lauriston's number 1 8-5. Paul

convincingly demolished his opponent 8-1, simultaneously outsmarting and 'out -ageing' his

opponent. Despite Michael's bionic arm, new racquet, fancy hand gel grip and enthusiastic driving,

winning proved to be a challenge, ultimately going down to a player who remains undefeated for the

season. Jordan, under immense pressure, systematically dismantled and dismembered his opponent

8-1, ultimately sealing the result.

The last time the two teams met, it was a draw, so it was a particularly pleasing result.

The tennis proved to be the easy part, with the drive to and from the match proving hair raising at

best, frightening at worst, but luckily we arrived in one piece, just...

After a successful result, coffees were had, jokes were exchanged and eyes were drawn to the

surrounding specimens at a quaint cafe

We look forward to playing in the grand final in two weeks.
