Hardware Specifications - The Mac vs. PC debate

Duquesne University does not require students to bring a computer to campus. The stance is such that there are enough technological resources in public and course specific labs that students do not need to own their own computer. In reality students need access to a computer whether they live on or off campus. The University does not have an official policy on operating system, however certain schools and programs have a preference. In fact, 79% of majors on campus have no preference on Windows vs OS X.

It should be noted however, that when the enrollment for these majors is applied to the equation, a different picture is shown. Basically it comes down to the School of Business (SOBA). SOBA represents almost one quarter of Duquesne’s enrollment. SOBA and the Management in Healthcare Systems program in the Health Science School strongly encourage their students to use a Windows-based computer. These students are required to have access to certain “Windows-only” applications through the degree programs. Specifically, students in these programs need Microsoft Access, which is only available through Microsoft Office for Windows. As a side note, students working with an Intel-based Apple computer can install the Windows Operating system and the above mentioned corresponding software.

Based on the information obtained from the academic representatives polled, the following hardware recommendations can be extrapolated. The chart below refers to specifications of laptop computers and does not include software or accessories which will be listed in later sections.

Software Requirements - All Students

With the many different fields of study, it would seem likely that a wide range of student software requirements would exist. This is in fact no the case. Though students learn and generate content in varying fields, the software used for this content interaction is somewhat standardized. The software listed below indicates titles that are required or strongly recommended for all students enrolled at Duquesne University regardless of program of study. Specific hardware and software for each major are listed in Appendix

SOFTWARE TITLE USAGE

Microsoft Word: 2013 for PC/2011 for Mac Word Processing and workbook design

Microsoft Excel: 2013 for PC/2011 for Mac Spreadsheets design and analysis

Mobile Devices - The Mobility Revolution

Two years ago this section would have been omitted from this report. However the rapid growth of “smart,” phones and other mobile internet accessing devices has grown exponentially in the last four years. The percentage of freshmen entering college with a smartphone nearly doubled with 27% in 2009, and 49% in 2010. This, according to a Wall Street Journal study, is projected to increase to over 60% with the 2011-2012 freshman class. The rise of tablet computers and eReaders such as the iPad and Amazon Kindle have also impacted the way students interact with content and course work. In their 2011 report title, Internet Trends, Morgan Stanley estimates that mobile internetusage (cell phones, PDA’s tablets, etc.) will overtake desktop internet usage (both desktop, laptop, sever and other traditional computing devices) in 2015. This has significant pedagogic and lifestyle implications for students and faculty members.

As of June 2011, only two programs require students to have any type of mobile device: Pharmacy and Nursing. That being said, neither programs require students to have access to a mobile device until program year three. Currently, these two programs require a Blackberry, iPhone or Android smartphone running a recent (within the last year) operating system. If the student does not wish to use a smartphone, an iPod Touch can be used in its place.

It should also be noted that each department was polled about using eReaders as a replacement for textbooks. Every department presumes it will happen eventually and three departments on campus are actively investigating this premise. These departments cannot be named at this time due to legal ramifications. If any departments embark on an eBook initiative, many students will begin using devices such as the Apple iPad, Barnes and Noble Nook, Amazon Kindle, etc.

Recommended Accessories

The technological needs and requirements of students does not stop at hardware and software. As financial and environmental conditions in the world changes academia follows suit. The list below is not comprehensive or mandatory; however, it offers a basic reference point to items required by students that fall outside of a computer.

ACCESSORY USAGE

HP Color DeskJet Printer There is free black and white printing available to students in the computer lab across campus. Many majors require some assignments to be submitted in color. HP printers are recommended because ink for these printer is conveniently sold at the Computer Store.

Flash Drives (More than one) Flash drives are commonly used to transport information between computers and between students. Some faculty members are now requiring students to submit assignments on flash drives. More than one flash drive will be used by students in a give academic career.

Notebook locks Though Duquesne University is rated in the top 10 safest schools every year, one cannot be too careful. Computers should be secured when not in use.

Laptop Bag or Sleeves Though laptops will fit in most backpacks and bags it is important to bring a bag is designed to protect a laptop or sleeve that will fit into another bag.

External Hard Drive External hard drives can be used to store larger items and also to backup a computer.

Digital Camera and memory card Many projects require photographic elements.

Television There are televisions across campus, but not in residence hall rooms. Laptops can connect easily to televisions to stream movies, listen to music and use as an external monitor.

Headphones Listening to music is an obvious use of headphones, however language labs and other assignments now have audio elements.

Cables (Ethernet, USB, HDIM, Audio and More), Extension Cords, Surge Protectors

Though the trend is to go wireless, most people need several cables to connect to and power their printers, network, televisions, speakers and more.
