ACO Selecta - Floor DrainageADVANCED FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

Fire protection in a gully!ACO Building Drainage introduces the Selectarange of floor gullies. A range that has evolved ashave changes in the construction environment.Durability and functional performance combinewith modern aesthetics and sustainable materials.Added to these features are patented systemsdesigned to augment other measures that reducerisk and aid compliance with the RegulatoryReform (Fire Safety) Order.

Fire resistance performance: EI 120-U/U

High performance stainless steel or copper alloy gratings

Selecta provides choice: from high performance stainless steel designs through traditional copper alloy to lowcost economy options. Our sophisticated manufacturing techniques enable off-the-shelf availability.

Drainage options without body

Accessories such as sealed rodding eyes can beused in stand alone or with the gully as required.

Advanced waterproofing systems

Ideal for concrete, tile and natural stone,Selecta also integrates with flexible sheetflooring as well as the most recent tankingmaterials for wetrooms.

Fire protection and cost reduction

Time and cost of installation can be enhanced through use ofthe ACO Fit-In sleeve system - ideal for slab penetrations, Fit-Inremoves the need for mortar and reduces build time, as wellas providing extra fire protection.

Intumescent fire cartridge

Tested in accordance with BS EN 1366. The morestringent replacement for BS476 ensures performanceeven in the most severe fire situations, reducingsubstantially smoke transfer to other building floorlevels as well as reducing oxygen paths that feed fire.

Designed and manufactured to BS EN 1253

Remarkably few systems available on themarket meet the requirements of thisstandard; specify confidently as factorsranging from self cleaning ability thoughadequate dpm flange membrane clampingarea are ensured.

ACO Selecta - Floor DrainageADVANCED FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

The role of the gully in preventative fire protection

There is now a wealth of material to considerregarding fire safety. The Regulatory Reform (FireSafety Order) 20051 aims to reduce both hazardand risk, where risk is the likelihood andconsequence of fire.

Current Building Regulations2 incorporate designguidance where, given certain building types, compartmentation is used to reduce firepropagation. The efficacy of such schemes isdependent on both integrity and insulation.

In the case of fire, Integrity prevents the passage offlame and hot gas from the exposed to unexposedside, whereas insulation restricts temperature risebelow specified levels3. Preserving the integrity andinsulation performance of a separating element isproblematic if gullies are used for other thanground floor drainage. In effect, they present an'open ended' pipe penetration when the water trapis depleted and connecting pipework has beendestroyed. This worst case scenario is assumed inthe test protocol followed by ACO.

Penetrating devices, such as gullies, are tested inaccordance with BS EN 13664, and classified inaccordance with BS EN 135015 (see references on page 7).

With a drainage gully, the underside is consideredmore critical as fire spread is more likely from lowerfloors. Attention must therefore be paid to thedesign of the gully body and its installation. Whilst measurements are taken at the grating viathermocouples, these upper parts of the system do not determine system performance.

The gully body is cast iron and is sited within athermally insulating pre-formed concrete jacket toprovide effective fire containment and limitthermal transmittance. Protection is augmented byan intumescent cartridge that sits in the outletspigot. This material expands at approximately150°C, closing off the system completely.

Used in combination, water trap depletion isdramatically reduced and integrity and insulationmaintained. An additional, though unmeasuredbenefit, is the reduced passage of smoke.

Risk proportionatemeasuresThe Publicly Available Specification - PAS 796

comments on 'risk-proportionate' fire precautions. In this context unnecessary expenditure isprecluded, but where appropriate, furtherprotection can be included if necessary.

The ACO Selecta system is designed to offeranother tool for the specifier to incorporate intotheir design where appropriate. Its components aredesigned in such a way as to minimise the 'extracost' of using them. The economical body isdesigned for multi-purpose applications; theintumescant cartridge is an insignificant cost inrelation to the gully as a whole; the Fit-Ininstallation sleeve is in itself designed to speed upthe installation process.

Part or system costs are available from ACO on request.

Declaration of fireresistance performanceThe ACO Selecta vertical outlet body in conjunctionwith the optional intumescent fire cartridge is testedin accordance with BS EN 1366-34 and classified inaccordance with BS EN 13501-25.

The performance can be classified as EI 120-U/Uindicating the gullies are uncapped both inside and outside the furnace.

ACO Selecta - Floor DrainageADVANCED FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

Grating material choiceACO offer both stainless steel and copper alloygratings in a variety of patterns.

The raw material cost of each alloy differssignificantly: the major constituent of stainless steel isiron at over 70%, whilst copper is present in excessof 50% by weight in most of its alloy forms. A costratio of 2:1 is realistic favouring stainless steel.

For the applications intended both alloys haveexcellent mechanical properties and corrosionresistance, although the manifestation of corrosion differs.

Copper alloysPopularly referred to as nickel bronze, the exactconstituents can be varied according to theproperties desired. Due to the large number ofalloys available, users may have to refer to themanufacturer for guidance on corrosion resistancein specific applications, however prolongedexposure to ammonia should be avoided.

For many, the attraction of copper alloy is itsgolden hue, evident when new. The surface willinitially tarnish quickly depending on environment. The 'patina' is a result of oxidisation that forms apassive layer that changes colour with time. An intermediate stage is evident on the gratingaperture walls below. The passive layer protects theunderlying metal from further corrosion. This canbe removed but will reform continually. As such itseffects are considered aesthetic only.

The alloy has properties favourable to low costmanufacturing techniques such as casting.Corrosion effects are exacerbated by rough castingsurfaces, particularly where this roughness is notsubsequently removed. ACO manufacture allcooper alloy gratings with smooth side walls.

Stainless steel alloysThe stainless steel alloy family is dominated byaustenitic '304' and '316' grades. As such there is awealth of data on corrosion resistance to aid theuser in specification and reduce uncertainty. In thecase of most stainless steels chlorides may causecorrosion if exposure is prolonged.

Passive grades, as used by ACO, benefit from anaturally occurring chromium-rich oxide thatspontaneously regenerates if damaged in normaluse. This passive layer is invisible to the eye andtherefore little change in appearance is evidentover the product life.

ACO Selecta - Floor DrainageADVANCED FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

Conservation of fuel and powerBuilding Regulations Approved Document Part Lrelates to the thermal performance of the building. It is generally accepted that this performance is theresult of complex interactions between manysystems. Floor penetrating gullies can complicatethe design particularly with regard to insulationdetailing.

The two-piece Selecta system accommodates floorand insulation thicknesses up to 295mm via astandard extension piece supplied with the gullytop. The plastic extension section can be easily cuton-site to suit specific applications.

Load classAll product combinations meet the requirements ofBS EN 1253: 2003 for Load Class K3. The K3application area is described as “area withoutvehicular traffic, such as bathrooms in dwellings, care homes, hotels, schools, swimming baths, public wash and shower facilities, balconies, loggias, terraces and roofs with greenery.”
