De Zaaier (The Sower) was commissioned in 1993 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first arrival of the Dutch in Manitoba. The sculpture by renowned artist Leo Mol resides in the sculpture garden at Assiniboine Park. Librarian’s Picks
The break / Katherena Vermette. Toronto : House of Anansi Press, 2016. 352 pages.
From the publisher:
When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime.
In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim — police, family, and friends — tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. […] Through their various perspectives a larger,
more comprehensive story about lives of the residents in Winnipeg’s North End is exposed.
A powerful intergenerational family saga, The Break showcases Vermette’s abundant writing talent and positions her as an exciting new voice in Canadian literature.
I-Minds : how cell phones, computers, gaming, and social media are changing our brains, our behavior, and the evolution of our species / mari K. Swingle, PhD. Gabriola Island : New Society Publishers, 2016. xix, 243 pages.
Review from ForeWord Magazine reviews:
Anyone who has formed a dependency on a smartphone, tablet, or 24-hour digital connectivity would do well to read i-Minds, Mari K. Swingle’s eye-opening, and at times unsettling, book. It is both a palatable, compelling exploration of the impact of digital media on the human brain as well as an impressive piece of research. Using her own clinical observations, Swingle conclusively demonstrates that Internet addiction significantly switches brain function.
The point of Swingle’s book, however, is to broaden the scope of her observations to encompass everyday users of “i-tech”, […] to examine those who are affected by “technological integration versus technological interference.” The author addresses the topic both biologically (what goes on in our brains) and sociologically, from childhood to adulthood. A nice touch is the addition of sections
MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE LIBRARY SNT June 2017 5 called “Scientific Corner,”in which Swingle supports the text with specific references to scientific research.
[…]
While Swingle makes an eloquent case for the fact that i-media is “rewiring our brains,” she remains nonjudgmental and scientifically balanced in her perspective. This approach makes i-Minds all the more essential as a contemporary study well worth reading.
The way of letting go : one woman’s walk toward forgiveness / Wilma Derksen. Grand Rapids, MI : Zondervan, 2017. 234 pages.
From the publisher:
Maybe it was the sting of remarks from a relative or friend. Maybe a miscarriage ended your hopes for a family. For all of your heartbreaks, maybe you wished there was someone to help you through. For Wilma Derksen, letting go of the 15 misconceptions about grief led her back to hope. In this book she tells how you can do the same.
Wilma’s world collapsed when her teenage daughter, Candace, was taken hostage and murdered. Wilma now shares her choices to “let go” of heartbreak, which gave her the courage to navigate through the dark waters of sorrow. Like Wilma, maybe your heartbreak forced you to retreat from happy expectations, of believing that life is fair, of finding closure for every circumstance. She encourages patiently: let go of the happy ending, let go of perfect justice, let go of fear, and let go of closure. Wilma's wisdom will help you overcome your broken heart, and her advice will enable you to break free of pain to live a life of true joy.
Social media for government : a practical guide to understanding, implementing, and managing social media tools in the public sphere / Gohar F. Khan. Gateway East, Singapore : Springer, 2017. xxiv, 159 pages.
From the publisher:
This book provides practical know-how on understanding, implementing, and managing main stream social media tools from a public sector perspective. Through social media, government organizations can inform citizens, promote their services, seek public views and feedback, and monitor satisfaction with the services they offer so as to improve their quality. Given the
6 MANITOBA LEGISLATIVE LIBRARY SNT June 2017 exponential growth of social media in contemporary society, it has become an essential tool for communication, content sharing, and collaboration. This growth and these tools also present an unparalleled opportunity to implement a transparent, open, and collaborative government. However, many government organization, particularly those in the developing world, are still somewhat reluctant to leverage social media, as it requires significant policy and governance changes, as well as specific know-how, skills and resources to plan, implement and manage social media tools. As a result, governments around the world ignore or mishandle the opportunities and threats presented by social media. To help policy makers and governments implement a social media driven government, this book provides guidance in developing an effective social media policy and strategy. It also addresses issues such as those related to security and privacy.
The education of Augie Merasty : a residential school memoir / Joseph Auguste Merasty with David Carpenter. New edition. Regina : University of Regina Press, 2017. 96 pages.
Review from Publishers Weekly Reviews:
More than 70 years ago, Merasty was sent to St. Therese Residential School in Sturgeon Landing, on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It was one of the 130 church-run schools that all aboriginal children were required to attend as a part of a Canadian government policy of forced assimilation in the 20th century. Between 1935 and 1944, Merasty was physically and sexually abused, beaten,
insulted, and exposed to unspeakable conditions by priests and nuns who were supposed to educate him. He carried the scars on his mind and body all his life. Unlike many of his peers who suffered similar or worse abuse silently, Merasty remained courageously determined to publish a book that would expose the injustices he and so many other children endured. In Carpenter, he found a superb writer and editor and a tenacious ally who saw the book through to publication even after Merasty's enthusiasm for the project was dimmed first by alcoholism and later by cancer. This book offers a glimpse into Merasty's life in the residential school, exposing a terrible regime where evil went entirely unchecked. A quick read, it's nevertheless a historically significant one.
